Empoli will play hosts to Atalanta in the midst of some topsy-turvy form for the home side with the Bergamo outfit heading away from home after losing a crucial battle to Lazio that dented their early title charge.
It feels like months ago when Atalanta were top of the Serie A table, as they now sit fourth after winning just three of their past five games in the league. The recent loss to Lazio put them ahead of Atalanta in the table on goals difference, and created a five-point gap on leaders Napoli at the same time.
Gian Piero Gasperini men were never really in the game against the Rome side, as Mattia Zaccagni scored within 10 minutes, before Felipe Anderson scored a second. Worse yet for the club, Luis Muriel saw red with seconds left on the clock, and he will now miss this game.
As for Empoli, they were demolished in Turin on Friday night after a 4-0 demolition from Juventus. They have, however, had eight days of rest before this game, and they have still managed to win two of their past five games, just like Atalanta.
Their first win in this run came in a narrow 1-0 win away from home against Bologna, before beating Monza two weeks ago back on home soil. At the same time, their only losses came against the revitalised Juventus and the champions, AC Milan, so there isn’t too much negativity surrounding the club’s run right now.
On the other hand, Atalanta will be vengeful after such a terrible display against Lazio on Sunday.
