Match preview: Team & Player Performance

The Premier League's two red and white stripe wearing sides meet for the first time ever in the top-flight.

At kick off, it's newly-promoted Brentford who are two places and two points better off than their hosts.

In the Bees' last league outing, nine days ago, they came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Yoane Wissa's equalised with a spectacular curler just before half time and then Mads Roerslev Rasmussen, at the second attempt, poked home a late winner.

That's just Brentford's third victory in 12 league outings but it leaves them 12 points clear of danger.

As for Southampton, this'll be their first league fixture of 2022, drawing 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur back on 28 December.

James Ward-Prowse opened the scoring with a half-volley but the Saints had to work hard for their point, given that Mohammed Salisu was sent off in the first half.

This means Ralph Hasenhüttl's men have only lost one of their last six, also drawing at Crystal Palace and beating West Ham 3-2 over the festive period.

Ward-Prowse scored in all three of those games so can now score in four successive Premier League games for the first time in his career.

Both clubs have since won FA Cup ties away from home to reach the fourth round.

The Saints were taken to extra time by Swansea City on Saturday evening, eventually winning 3-2 at an empty Liberty Stadium.

Nathan Redmond and Mohamed Elyounoussi on target before forgotten man Shane Long popped up and bagged the winner in the additional half hour.

Earlier in the day, Brentford swatted aside League Two Port Vale with Marcus Forss breaking the deadlock and Bryan Mbeumo scoring a hat-trick.

In round four, Brentford will travel to Everton; Southampton meantime will host Coventry City.

Brentford have actually won their last two trips to Southampton, both 2-0, in League One in 2010 and in a League Cup tie just last season.
