Match preview: Team & Player Performance

After Thursday night’s major disappointment, can Arsenal end a miserable January with a win?

In midweek, the Gunners crashed out the Carabao Cup to Liverpool, losing 2-0 at home, having resolutely held out for a goalless draw at Anfield a week earlier.

The hosts lacked any fluency or zest so rather meekly squandered an excellent chance to reach Wembley and a cup final.

Arsenal are still winless in 2022 having lost to Manchester City on New Years’ Day and then gone out the FA Cup at Nottingham Forest.

Now, Mikel Arteta’s side have just 18 games left this season and fourth place is well and truly up for grabs.

As it stands, having ended 2021 with four straight wins, the Gunners are sixth, level with Manchester United, one point behind Spurs and two adrift of West Ham.

Arsenal don’t play again until 10 February, a trip to Wolves, so will not want to go into that extended break following another poor result.

Despite all the hullabaloo surrounding last weekend’s North London Derby postponement, it’s Burnley who’ve had the most games called off.

Five of the Clarets’ last seven engagements, including the same Watford game twice, haven’t gone ahead, meaning they’ve played just twice since 12 December.

In both of these games, Sean Dyche’s team have lost 3-1, first at Manchester United and then, crucially, at Leeds United three days later.

Last weekend, as they weren’t in action again, the Clarets slipped to the bottom of the table but they’ve played up to four games less than some of their direct rivals.

A year ago, Burnley 1-0 won at the Emirates, their first such win since 1974, so are now looking to win back-to-back away games at Arsenal for the very first time.

Will Burnley leap off the bottom of the table with a shock win?

Our 101 Match prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Burnley

Arsenal had won nine consecutive home matches against Burnley before last season’s 1-0 defeat, with both teams scoring in four of their last seven wins over the Clarets.
