Wolves vs Sheffield United: Match preview

Fans of Wolves and Sheffield United will perhaps both feel this condensed season has had a harsher impact on them than other clubs.

Both started the season with managers regarded as among the best in the Premier League in the previous season. Wolves finished 7th last season missing out on European Football to Spurs on goal difference of just 3.

Sheffield United were at one point in contention for a Champions League place before losing their final 3 matches of the season saw them pushed down into 9th place.

However, in a condensed season, it is time on the training pitches that is sacrificed in favour of rest, recovery and tactical preparation sessions for the coming game. Therefore, Wilder and Nuno’s ability to improve their squad through coaching was somewhat limited compared to the prior season.

In addition, long-term injuries albeit at different ends of the pitch diminished their ability to rest and rotate with smaller squads than many of their competitors. That in-turn leads to fatigue and further injuries to key players creating something of a vicious circle. One that both sides have struggled to escape from.

The Blades have already departed ways with Chris Wilder; the man many felt should have won the Premier League manager of the season award for 2019/20 ahead of Jurgen Klopp. However, Paul Heckingbottom’s run of 4 defeats in 4 since taking charge, in which his team has scored once while conceding 12, suggests that perhaps Wilder was far from being the problem.

It would be madness for Wolves to follow suit. Yet prior to their win over Fulham, the whisperings over whether he would be replaced had begun. It seems in the Premier League now, a run of 2 points from a possible 15 is a problem only sacking the manager can solve and all context is removed from the conversation.

Wolves will likely win on Saturday. They will also likely finish the season closer to relegation than European places. However, Nuno deserves the chance to solve the problems with a full squad, fans in the stadium, a proper pre-season and without a month shaved off the season. Sadly, this chance wasn’t afforded to Chris Wilder and I suspect it is a decision the Blades will regret in the long run.

Wolves team news vs Sheffield United

Raul Jimenez remains ruled out after fracturing his skull against Arsenal earlier in the season. The club are being cautious with his return for obvious reasons.

Pedro Neto was removed just 30 minutes into the 0-1 victory at Fulham last weekend. A specialist has confirmed a significant injury to his patella which will require surgery. This will effectively rule him out for the rest of the year. Fábio Silva is expected to start in place of Neto.

Jonny Otto is another whose season is over following surgery on his knee ligament injury. With Rúben Vinagre on loan at Famalicão, Rayan Aït Nouri has the chance to nail-down the left-back spot as his own in the remaining games this season.

Fernando Marçal is also ruled out following surgery to his groin. Sadly, it has been a stop-start debut season for Marçal in English football.

Rúben Neves and Willy Boly have both tested positive for COVID-19 and are self-isolating in line with government guidance.

João Moutinho seems the most likely option to come in for Neves. While Conor Coady and Romain Saïss will continue in Wolves’ back four.

Sheffield United team news vs Wolves

Jack Robinson continues to be ruled out with injury. His last appearance for the club was their final match of 2020 against Burnley.

Billy Sharp is also out due to a pelvic injury suffered in training. It looks like he will be out until the start of May.

Oliver McBurnie will also miss this match due to a foot injury. He was due to have an x-ray this week to determine the extent of the damage but he seems likely to miss a few matches at least.

Sander Berge is back in training follow a serious hamstring injury against Manchester United in December. Paul Heckingbottom confirmed the club are hoping he can be involved in a couple of weeks.

Jack O’Connell is likewise back in training after a long layoff. However, the club are being careful to put no time on his return at the moment.

“Jack is still going through a process. It’d be unfair to Jack and the staff to say: ‘We need him by this date’. He’ll be led by how he responds to his rehab and treatment.”
– Paul Heckingbottom, Sheffield United Manager

Chris Basham is perhaps the closest to a return from the Blades’ injured defenders. There is a chance he will be on the bench here with a view to giving him some minutes later in the game. He should be back starting matches before the end of the month though.
