Wolverhampton Wanderers welcomes Newcastle to the Molineux on Sunday for this Premier League match.

Is there such a thing as away advantage in football? Wolves seem to have something of a mental block when it comes to playing Newcastle here. They have never won a home Premier League fixture in 5 attempts against the Magpies.

Their last league win against them came back in the 1970s in the old format for the English top-flight; the ‘First Division’.

Newcastle seem to suffer from the same issue of performing better at the Molineux than in front of their own fans in this fixture. They have just 1 home league win in 6 since the 1970s against Wolves.

The last eight league matches in this head-to-head has seen 0 home wins, 4 away wins and 4 draws.

Wolves vs Newcastle United: What are the betting odds?

This is a match that Wolves have historically struggled with at home. Despite this, they start the day as the 3/4 on favourites.

Each of the last 3 matches in this head-to-head have ended in a stalemate. Odds of 5/2 are available if you see Wolves and Newcastle cancelling each other out on Sunday.

Newcastle have collected 8 points from a possible 12 from their last 4 visits to the Molineux. This makes their 17/4 odds for a win here look very appealing.

Wolves vs Newcastle United: Recommended bets

The last three matches between Wolves and Newcastle have all finished 1-1. 101 Great Goals’ prediction of yet another Wolves 1-1 Newcastle is available at odds of 6/1.

Wolves’s last home victory over Newcastle came back in January 2003 by a scoreline of 3-2 in the FA Cup. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 33/1.

Newcastle’s last win at the Molineux was in the Championship back in February 2017. You can back them at 12/1 for the same 0-1 scoreline here on Sunday.

Neutrals will be hoping the recent trend of low-scoring Wolves v Newcastle United matches does not hold. Six of the last seven matches between the clubs have seen under 2.5 goals scored. You can back another low scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 4/6 for under 2.5 goals once again.

Raúl Jiménez is Wolves’ top-scorer in the Premier League once again this season. The Mexican international already has 3 goals this campaign, including the only goal of the game against Leeds last weekend. Raúl is the 3/1 favourite to score the game’s opener on Sunday once again. Or evens to bag a goal at any time during the game against Newcastle United.

Callum Wilson has settled into life at Newcastle quickly. The England international has 4 Premier League goals in his first 5 games for the Geordies. Wilson is the favourite of those in black and white to get on the scoresheet at 12/5. You can back him at 13/2 to grab the game’s opening goal.

Wolves vs Newcastle United: Match preview

On the face of it, the spate of 1-1 draws between these sides would suggest they are very cagey when facing each other with teams looking not to lose rather than win the matches. However, the recent results alone really don’t tell the full picture.

Both matches last season followed a similar pattern. Newcastle took the lead with a low probability scoring chance. Then Wolves squandered chance after chance as they battered the Magpies’ goal trying to get back into the game.

Across the two games last season, Newcastle created 0 big chances – which is a metric from Opta to signify goal scoring chances with a high probability of resulting in a goal.

Wolves on the other hand created 7 big chances in total across the two games. Based on the chances they created, Wolves would have been expected to score 4 goals against the Geordies last season. While Newcastle managed to score 2 goals against Wolves with a total xG of just 0.78.

Dropping Points When Ahead

This isn’t to say Newcastle didn’t deserve their 2 points, or that Wolves should have won both games. Ultimately, goals tend to change games. In both matches last season, Newcastle were the better side and were ahead both in terms of xG and the shot count at the time they went ahead.

From that point, Newcastle tried to protect what they had and created almost nothing of note against Wolves for the rest of them match. In contrast, Wolves never looked like scoring against the Magpies until they went behind in both games. They only really opened them up and created their big chances once they were 1-0 behind.

Which raises the question, why are Newcastle changing their approach when ahead? Is it a tactical choice from a manager who wants to hold onto what he has? Or is it a psychological issue with the players who drop off more and more in fear of conceding a goal?

Either way, trying to hold onto 1 goal lead in the Premier League for as long as Newcastle were in those games is difficult. The Geordies only collected 2 points per game once they had taken the lead last season. In contrast, Wolves picked up 2.76 point per game once ahead. Only Premier League champions Liverpool picked up more, with 2.85.

This suggests whoever scores first will dictate what sort of game we have on Sunday. If Newcastle take the lead, they will batten down the hatches and try to weather the storm. If Wolves take the lead, they will likely stick with the same approach as they look for that second goal to kill off the game.

Wolves team news vs Newcastle United

Nuno Espírito Santo (above) can report a reasonably clean bill of health coming into Sunday’s match.

Jonny Castro Otto is the only player ruled out for Wolves. Otto hasn’t featured for the club so far this season since his ACL injury against Olympiacos in the Europa League. The manager confirmed earlier this month that fans will need to be patient in expecting him back.

“He’s been working very hard, but these things take a lot of time, so it’s about being patient, doing the right things, not rushing, because a mistake in this moment of rehab can delay his return.”
– Nuno Espírito Santo, Wolves Manager

Rúben Neves was rested for the trip to Leeds at the weekend, making a brief cameo in the final 10 minutes of the match. He is expected to return to the starting XI here.

Adama Traoré hasn’t started either of the last two matches for Wolves. Has he fallen down the pecking order behind Nélson Semedo, Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto? Or will he be rotated back into the starting lineup here?

Summer signings Fábio Silva, Vitinha and Ki-Jana Hoever haven’t been able to break into the side yet. They have managed just 2 substitute appearances each and none of them got onto the pitch against Leeds. Fans are eager for them to get a chance to see what the new guys have to offer.

Newcastle United team news vs Wolves

Steve Bruce has a much longer injury list to contend with in comparison.

Matt Ritchie is ruled out due to a disruption of the shoulder joint. The injury required surgery and no time frame has been provided yet for his return to action.

Dwight Gayle (above) is another on the long term injury list. He injured his knee against Crewe which required an operation. This will rule him out for at least three or four months.

Martin Dubravka is also ruled out at the weekend. The 31-year-old goalkeeper was one of Newcastle’s players of the season last year. However, due to a heel injury, he is yet to don the gloves this campaign.

Sean Longstaff missed the Magpies’ 1-4 defeat to Manchester United due to tonsillitis. He will likely need another week to recover but could have an outside chance of making the bench here.

Isaac Hayden came off shortly after half-time against United complaining of tightness in his hamstring. The scan revealed it was just cramp, but Bruce is unlikely to rush him back suggesting you have to “be careful” with hamstrings.

Karl Darlow was hurt in a collision with Marcus Rashford last weekend. While he was able to complete the match, there were concerns the in-form stopper would be ruled out here. However, Bruce alleviated these fears in his press conference and he is likely to start between the sticks once more.

“Karl is still sore but he’s made a huge improvement. It’ll go down to the wire and we’ll see how he is. Thankfully it’s an impact injury and there’s no tear.”
– Steve Bruce, Newcastle Manager
