Match preview

West Ham United come into their weekend clash with an in-form Aston Villa at the London Stadium on the back of a trio of defeats both at home and abroad that could make matters somewhat difficult for the Hammers.

A heavy defeat in the FA Cup (v Southampton) was followed up by a pair of narrow 1-0 defeats both at home and abroad against Liverpool at Anfield and then against La Liga outfit Sevilla, so a welcomed home fixture could certainly be what ails Moyes' men. West Ham boasts the fifth-best home record in the Premier League, but that overall run of form may only go so far given their struggle for goals at the minute (one in three). The absence of Jarrod Bowen could prove decisive.

Philippe Coutinho will likely start against Leeds

The opposite is true for Aston Villa coming into matters on their away day in the capital, with Steven Gerrard's villains sitting on top of a three-match winning run that has seen them score nine goals in the process as they now enjoy sitting in the top half of the table.

Only Liverpool, Manchester City, and Tottenham have scored more goals than Villa in the last six fixtures in the Premier League while Gerrard's outfit has put themselves out well at the back as well with just five goals allowed in the same time frame. The budding attacking trio of Danny Ings, Ollie Watkins, and the ever-impressive Philippe Coutinho is a force to be reckoned with at the minute as well, and they could prove the decisive factor if West Ham is not up to scratch defensively.

West Ham team news

David Moyes still has a few key assets absent as West Ham prepares to host Aston Villa at the London Stadium tomorrow.

Jarrod Bowen is sure to miss out through injury, though the extent of it is not as bad as first feared. First-choice right-back Vladimir Coufal also misses out on proceedings, while Angelo Ogbonna and Andriy Yarmolenko are also laid up in drydock with injury concerns. In keeping with habitual practice, Moyes may not rotate much - if at all - despite their midweek Europa League clash with Sevilla.

Aston Villa team news

Steven Gerrard will be thankful to have as close to a fully fit squad to select from while no key assets are laid up and unavailable.

The former Liverpool great will only be stripped of the services of Marvelous Nakamba for the away day in the English capital, with Gerrard likely to keep faith in the side that ran out 3-0 winners against Leeds last weekend which should include Calum Chambers after the former Arsenal defender has displaced Ezri Konsa in the heart of the defense.

Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, and Philippe Coutinho should be set to continue their budding triumvirate upfront.
