West Ham vs Arsenal: Match details
Match: West Ham vs Arsenal
Competition: Premier League
Date: March 21, 2021
Kick-off time: 3:00 pm, March 21, 2021 (UK time)
Stadium: London Stadium
Betting prediction: West Ham 1-1 Arsenal
Arsenal dominates the recent head-to-head matchup with West Ham United, winning five of the last six fixtures the two London sides have clashed. But this season is outside of the norm by comparison, and though the Gunners saw-off the Hammers in a 2-1 win at the Emirates back in September, West Ham has since then been one of the best sides in the country while Arsenal has struggled overall.
There could be a result on the cards for David Moyes, but Arsenal could also be boosted by a recent north London derby win despite their dip in performance midweek against Olympiacos in the Europa League. A draw could be in the works for this one.
West Ham vs Arsenal: Recommended bets
Full-Time Result: Draw
Despite their overall progress in the Europa League, Arsenal still seems somewhat shaky in the level of their performances against Olympiacos, but they did look quite good against Tottenham last weekend. Their recent form in the Premier League has seen them earn seven points of a possible nine in their last three, and 10 points 18 across the last six. West Ham has an identical record in their last six (3-1-2), but they have lost twice in their last three. These are two pretty even sides, and a draw would be entirely unsurprising.
Goalscorer: Tomas Soucek – Anytime
Perhaps one of the only negative aspects of West Ham’s 2020-21 Premier League season is the absence of a more traditional striker. Take nothing away from the efforts of Michail Antonio, who is after all an English international and has indeed contributed in the goals column, and is second at the club this season. But it’s been Czech international Tomáš Souček that tops the goal charts for the Hammers, making him one of the top-scoring midfielders in the league this term. Considering West Ham’s quality on set-pieces (14 goals), Soucek could pose a serious goal threat against the Gunners at the weekend.

West Ham vs Arsenal: Match preview
It is a testament to the quality shown during West Ham’s 2020-221 Premier League season to see that four Hammers plus manager David Moyes have been shortlisted for this season’s London Football Awards. Tomáš Souček, Łukasz Fabiański, Declan Rice, and Manuel Lanzini all received nods. Souček and Rice both received nominations for the Premier League Player of the Year, and Rice also has been recognised and listed as in the Young Player of the Year category.
Such recognition is in stark contrast to last season, one where the Hammers had to fight tooth and nail to avoid relegation. Many expected them to languish once more in the bottom half of the table, but with ten matches left in their calendar, West Ham is in the driver’s seat of their own destiny that could end in European football next season. Their quick turnaround can certainly be viewed as inspiration, along a similar vein to that of Aston Villa.
At the moment their form is ahead of the clubs they are in a direct dogfight with, getting better recent results in the league than Liverpool, Everton, Tottenham, and Aston Villa, while they are level on form with Sunday’s opponent Arsenal. Tactically balanced, well drilled on both sides of the ball, and one of the hardest working sides in the Premier League this term, the Hammers have been blessed to not have to concern themselves with continental commitments. A singular focus on the league, together with smart summer spending, placed them in a position to take advantage of down-seasons suffered by the likes of Liverpool, Spurs, and Arsenal.
What is even more impressive is that they have yet to regress to the mean in terms of expected performances, and have overall showed themselves capable of sustaining their overall performance levels for the duration of the term without a true center forward. This speaks even further to how well they perform as a collective, as they are one of two clubs in the top seven that do not have a goal-scorer in double-digit returns in the league. While that fact can be exposed by good defensive outfits, West Ham still somehow finds a way, and Sunday may be no different.

Consistency must remain vital for Arsenal after Thursday’s European defeat
Through to the quarterfinals of the Europa League is a considerable achievement this season considering the fact that Arsenal has been struggling to keep their head above mid-table water all season long in the Premier League. But post-Christmas they’ve been much better both at home and abroad, and much of the data behind their improvement during the second half of the season shows a side that is fully capable of mounting a better challenge for the European places next season should all the trends hold.
But the nature of their performance on Thursday in the second-leg against Olympiacos at the Emirates shows why much of the Arsenal fanbase is wary of just how far the club can not only go in Europe this season but how close they are to closing the domestic gap moving forward. Despite the nature of their first-leg win, Arsenal was abject in midweek. Performance levels dropped considerably, responsibility on the ball was poor, multiple sitters were spurned, and a better side on the night could have scored more than the one goal the perennial Greek champion managed to muster.
Mikel Arteta spoke about his disappointment in the result. Qualification for the next stage of the knockout round is all well and good, but you still need to keep a certain standard of performance even when you have a considerable goal lead. What’s worse, is that they come into a very difficult fixture against West Ham on the back of a poor showing and that performance runs the risk of seeping over into domestic play. There is still an outside chance that the Gunners can claw their way up the table, and even if they do not finish in the top six, they still owe it to themselves to perform at the highest possible rate if they are to convince many that the improvement seen has not just been a flash in the pan.
This is a pretty critical period for the Gunners. Not necessarily regarding the current season – though Europe next term should be seen as absolutely vital for the club – but more so that the club has to put itself in the position to go from strength to strength as they need to get back to a better standing in the Premier League despite Arteta being a young manager. A good win against a good West Ham outfit in preparation for the latter stages of the Europa League and a potential late run up the table kicked-off by closing the point gap to the Hammers would be huge.

West Ham team news vs Arsenal
David Moyes remains without the trio of Arthur Masuaku, Angelo Ogbonna, and Andriy Yarmolenko.
Pablo Fornals, Ryan Fredericks, and Darren Randolph are all doubts for the Scotsman, though he welcomes back Jesse Lingard after he was unable to feature against Manchester United.
Arsenal team news vs West Ham
Bukayo Saka and Willian are both nursing fitness concerns and are unlikely to be called upon by Mikel Arteta as Arsenal travels across London on Sunday.
The persisting question of what to make of the duopoly of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette remains and there is no telling which one will start against the Hammers.
