West Brom vs Liverpool betting tips: Preview, predictions & odds

Back down they go again; West Brom is on their way into the Championship after eight seasons in the Premier League, their longest stint since the late 70s-early 80s. With nothing left to play for, it's party pooper status at the Hawthorns when Liverpool pays the Baggies a visit with their late-season run for Champions League football next season on the line.

Betting prediction: West Brom 0-3 Liverpool

This should be an incredibly straightforward affair, with Liverpool on an unbeaten run of seven matches (5-2-0) coming into the clash with West Brom at the Hawthorns. The Baggies, officially relegated, is ironically in their best spell of form for the entire season in the same period (2-2-3), but still are not expected to take anything off the in form 2019-20 title winners and will have to put in a top performance if they expect to get anywhere near the Reds to take something away come full-time.

West Brom vs Liverpool: Recommended bets

Winning Margin: Liverpool +2

Three of the last five wins for Liverpool have come with at least a +2 goal difference, so there is a decent chance that the Reds can pull off similar on their travels to West Brom on Sunday. Considering it has been five matches since the Baggies have kept a clean sheet, Liverpool should end the day with a relatively comfortable goal cushion.

First to Score: Mohamed Salah (2/1 odds)

With 21-goals in the Premier League this season and sitting neck and neck with Harry Kane for the golden boot, Mohamed Salah remains one of the brightest attacking talents the league has seen in recent years. Though others around him have been hit and miss this season in front of goal, the Egyptian international remains a constant in just how important he is to Jürgen Klopp’s side. It would be no surprise if he popped up with the goal to kick his fellow Reds on in a match there three points would be the only acceptable outcome.

West Brom vs Liverpool: Match preview

With Championship football a certainly, West Brom find themselves in the sticky situation of lacking clarity and the continued uncertainly as to whether Sam Allardyce will remain at the club next season. Now relegated for the first time in his managerial career, Big Sam is rumoured to be in the driver’s seat regarding his future at the Hawthorns and whether or not he will remain on the touchline in an attempt to guide the Baggies back to the Premier League as soon as possible. Should he choose to part ways with the club, rumours of an older yet familiar hand returning have begun to take hold.

With his own future still completely in the balance at Crystal Palace, former Baggies boss Roy Hodgson has been rumored to be in line for a return to the club after patrolling the Hawthorns’ touchline before he went on to manage England. The highly experienced manager could be just the tonic the club need to get back to the Premier League given his positive experience during his spell there, and a guiding hand that aided Palace in being a contending mid-table club during his entire time at Selhurst Park.

Credited with being an expert in getting the maximum out of players and a system at Palace that was tasked with remaining stable enough to garner the results required to reside between eleventh and fourteenth in the table during his four-year spell at the London side. The nature of the Championship is as such that stability and consistency are one of the biggest factors leading to a team achieving promotion, and if Hodgson was to make a return, the club would certainly be confident in his abilities once more, though they would need to make sure to give him the funds available to mold a side capable of withstanding the Championship test. With nothing left to play for in 2020-21, West Brom needs to decide who is to pilot their ship back to preferred waters, and soon.

Sadio Mané’s season is coming to a head at Liverpool but his importance remains clear

“If somebody shows me respect five million times and one time not, what is then more important? The world is in a situation when you make this one time bigger than necessary. That’s unfortunately the case. I am completely relaxed about it.” – Jürgen Klopp

There is no question that Sadio Mané has been absolutely vital for Liverpool since his move to Merseyside from Southampton back in the summer of 2016. Since his arrival, the Senegalese winger has bagged 72-goals in 159-appearances in the Premier League for the Reds but is in the midst of easily his most ineffective campaign since rocking up at the club. The Sédhiou-native has just 9-goals to his name this term, his lowest goal tally since his arrival on English shores after switching from Red Bull Salzburg to Southampton in 2014-15, and a far cry from the 40-goals he has scored (22, 18) in his two previous seasons at Anfield that led to him winning African Footballer of the Year in 2019.

His frustration at being left out of the Liverpool XI in the Reds’ 4-2 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday was visible while being equally unexpected given the massive nature of the fixture both historically and with the context of the season as well. But for Klopp form is key, and Mané has not been at the races, and against their biggest domestic rival, dropping a player who is not on song – despite their name and reputation – was probably the right call by the German headmaster.

But there is no rumored rift between the pair, but the situation now remains different given the existence of Diogo Jota at the club and the former luxury of being a guaranteed choice for Klopp’s matchday XI no longer exists. The hope will be that Mané will use that fact as motivation to push himself back to the heights he is well and truly capable of, and with his expected reintroduction into the team for Sunday, a performance is certainly required out of him.

West Brom team news vs Liverpool

Branislav Ivanovic and Robert Snodgrass remain absent for Sam Allardyce’s relegated West Brom, but no other options are a concern for their clash with Liverpool.

Despite being destined for the Championship, West Brom is likely to field their strongest possible XI and at the very least can try to upset the applecart and make life difficult for the Reds.

Liverpool team news vs West Brom

There are now nine players unavailable for selection to Jürgen Klopp, as the bookend of the 2020-21 Premier League brings no relief in terms of the Reds’ ravaged squad.

Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Ozan Kabak, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, James Milner, Divock Origi, and Caoimhin Kelleher are all on the treatment table for Sunday.

Expect the strongest available XI to be fielded by Klopp given the late-season goals Liverpool will try to meet.
