West Brom vs Brighton: Match preview
The two Albions face each other in the Premier League in what could be a real relegation 6 pointer.
Anything other than a win for West Brom here and you feel their relegation is all but sealed. Even victory here would leave them a minimum of 8 points behind Newcastle and needing almost 2 points per game from their final 12 matches to hit the 40-point mark.
Brighton, on the other hand, will be looking nervously over their shoulders now that Fulham have hit a patch of good form. The Cottagers picking up 7 points from the last 3 matches has put them just 4 points behind Brighton.
A win here, coupled with results elsewhere going their way, could put some breathing space between Brighton and the drop zone. This would leave Fulham and Newcastle to scrap over the 3rd relegation spot between themselves.
Brighton are a case study in how good football doesn’t matter if you are terrible in both boxes. The Crystal Palace match was a microcosm of their season. They conceded 2 goals from the only 2 shots they allowed in their own box. At the other end, they had 20 of their 25 shots in the Palace box, yet managed to convert only once. Their forwards missed a host of chances, including Welbeck once and Trossard twice from point-blank range.
Overall, they have managed to score 26 goals from an expected goals of 37.85 so far this season; the largest underperformance in the league. At the other end, Mat Ryan was statistically the worst-performing shot-stopper in the Premier League before being dropped by Graham Potter. His final match for the club was the 3-0 defeat at Leicester in mid-January.
Since then, Robert Sánchez has come in and has performed at 2.9 goals better than expected goals suggests. This puts him among the top 5 goalkeepers in the league over the last 13 matches.
They still have huge problems at the other end, with Neal Maupay, Danny Welbeck, Leandro Trossard and Aaron Connolly all getting plenty of chances, yet failing to find the net more often than not.
Brighton will undoubtedly dominate this match and have the lions-share of shots. But as against Palace, this will matter for little if they fail in both boxes.
West Brom team news vs Brighton
Semi Ajayi will miss this match due to suspension following his red card after just 30 minutes against Burnley.
Kieran Gibbs hasn’t featured for the club since January due to a neck and shoulder injury.
“It’s only Kieran who has a very bad neck and shoulder problem. He’s out.”
– Sam Allardyce, West Bromich Albion Manager
Robert Snodgrass suffered a massive bruise behind his knee in the match against Manchester United. This caused him to miss training as well as the match against Burnley last Saturday. With a full week of rest, he could be back in time for Saturday’s match against Brighton.
Snodgrass and Dara O’Shea coming in for Semi Ajayi and Matt Phillips are the only expected changes to the side that started the match against Burnley last weekend.
Brighton team news vs West Brom
The knee injury Solly March sustained against Liverpool will keep him out for the rest of the season. He hoped to return for a full pre-season in the summer.
Florin Andone has missed the entire season so far with a cruciate ligament injury. He is expected to return to group training in March with a view to returning to action towards the end of this season.
Tariq Lamptey is yet to feature for Brighton in 2021. Lamptey was the star of their season before his injury and Brighton fans will be looking forward to his return.
“He started the very first stages of joining the group so depends on how this week goes. He has got a chance to maybe be involved.”
– Graham Potter, Brighton & Hove Albion Manager
Adam Webster has missed Brighton’s last 2 matches with an ankle ligament injury. As the injury is still being assessed, no time frame has been provided for his turn and it is unlikely he will be involved here.
