Betting prediction: Watford 1 – 2 Southampton

Watford welcomes Southampton to Vicarage Road on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Saints have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 5 wins to Watford’s 2, from their 12 encounters in the Premier League.

This record extends into all competitions, with the Saints having 37 wins to Watford’s 26. Although, many of those games took place in the old ‘Southern League’ pre-1920, including Watford suffering an 11-0 thrashing back in 1902; the biggest competitive win in this head-to-head by some distance.

Recent matches also favour the Saints, with Watford winning just 1 of the last 14 competitive matches between them. The Hornets find themselves in the midst of a 6-game run without a win versus Southampton, in all competitions.

Saturday’s visitors completed a league double over Watford when they were last in the Premier League. This includes a 1-3 win on their last visit to Vicarage Road.

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Watford 1 – 2 Southampton is available at odds of 10/1.

3-2 Watford win. Watford have just 1 home win in the Premier League against Southampton; the first-ever Premier League match between them back in 1999. A repeat of the 3-2 score from that day is available at odds of 34/1.

1-1 draw. Two of the last four matches in this head-to-head finished with a 1-1 scoreline. Odds of 7/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

1-3 Southampton win. Southampton’s last visit to Vicarage Road, back in June 2020, ended in a 1-3 win for the Saints. You can back them at 19/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Over 2.5 goals. Watford vs Southampton at Vicarage Road almost guarantees goals, with 9 of the 11 matches between them in all competitions during the Premier League era having ended with more than 2.5 goals. There has been 47 goals across those 11 matches; an average of over 4 goals per game. You can back another high scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 1.9/1 for over 2.5 goals.

Joshua King Goalscorer. King (below) took a while to settle this season, going 9 games for club and country without a goal. However, he exploded to life last weekend with a hat-trick in a 2-5 thrashing of Everton. The Norwegian international is 8/1 to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 3.25/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Southampton.

Watford vs Southampton: Match preview

The Claudio Ranieri era at Watford is set to become the most entertaining of all time if his 2 games so far are anything to go by. There have been 12 goals in total across those 2 outings; an average of 6 goals per game.

Perhaps the more relevant stat, though, is Watford averaging 1.5 points from those games. With 29 fixtures remaining this campaign, they would amass a further 43-44 points over the remaining games at that pace. A points total in the mid-50s would be enough to put the Hornets safely in midtable, possibly even contending for a place in the newly-formed UEFA Conference League. Although, in truth, Watford’s fans would settle for merely avoiding relegation if offered it right now.

Obviously, it is ridiculous to use a sample size of just 2 games in such a way. It was a fun way to simply highlight that it has been ‘so far, so good’ under the experienced Italian. Especially when one of the opponents was the league’s in-form side, Liverpool. You can probably count on half of one hand the number of teams that could come to Watford and do that to this team.

In many ways, Saturday’s game against Southampton will likely represent the best test so far for Ranieri. It will largely be the results against the other teams in the bottom half of the table that dictate the success or failure of the season.

Southampton come into the match with their own problems to solve. Neither Ché Adams nor Adam Armstrong have found the goals to replace Danny Ings, who departed the club in the summer. The baton has now been passed to 20-year-old Chelsea loanee, Armando Broja, to replace Ings’ output.

It has also been so far, so good as far as Broja is concerned, though. He has rewarded Ralph Hasenhüttl’s faith in him with 2 goals in his 2 starts so far. However, after picking up a knock last weekend, he is now a doubt for this match.

Adams hasn’t even looked like scoring so far this season. In fact, from his 6 appearances, he has amassed just 0.43 expected goals from his shots, or 0.10 xG per 90. Essentially, you would likely need to play the striker for 10 full matches for a return of 1 goal at that rate.

Armstrong has been a little better and has a goal to his name this season. However, since that strike against Everton, his xG has been on a downward trend, despite the attacker taking as many if not more shots per game. Essentially, he is taking more shots but not from good shooting positions. Thus, he isn’t scoring goals.

Southampton will be hoping that Broja shakes off his knock, otherwise our 1-2 prediction likely needs flipping around.

Watford celebrate

Watford team news vs Southampton

Emmanuel Dennis is suspended for this match, having accumulated 5 yellow cards this season. Kwadwo Baah likely replaces him on the Watford bench.

Peter Etebo remains on the long-term injury list having torn a quad muscle towards the end of the Newcastle game. He has had surgery to repair the damage and is expected to be out for at least 4 months.

Christian Kabasele remains out with a hamstring injury that has caused him to miss Watford’s last 2 matches.

Francisco Sierralta picked up a hamstring injury during the game against Leeds and was replaced midway through the second half. He has subsequently missed the last two games, but has now returned to training and faces a fitness test to be involved here.

Danny Rose missed the trip to Everton last weekend due to a minor calf injury. However, he has returned to full training and is in contention to start at left-back over Adam Masina.

Kiko Femenia lasted just 56 minutes of the match against Liverpool before being withdrawn due to a knock to the hip. He remains a major doubt here and faces a late fitness test to be involved.

Southampton team news vs Watford

The Saints’ captain, James Ward-Prowse, has now completed his three-match ban following a red card at Chelsea. He is expected to return to the starting XI on Saturday in place of Ibrahima Diallo.

Jack Stephens is Southampton’s only long-term injury concern. He is expected to be out for another 6 to 8 weeks due to a tendon in the knee being disrupted.

Armando Broja missed the cup match against Chelsea in midweek due to a knock. Although, he would have been unavailable to face his parent club anyway. The striker is a doubt for this match and faces a fitness test. Ché Adams and Adam Armstrong will be battling to replace him up top.

Mohamed Elyounoussi had a minor operation on his wrist on Monday, forcing him to miss the Chelsea game. However, he should be available again for the weekend. Moussa Djenepo could start in his absence if not fit, though.
