Betting prediction: Watford 0 – 2 Liverpool

Watford welcomes Liverpool to Vicarage Road in Watford on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Reds have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 10 wins to Watford’s 3, from their 14 encounters in the Premier League.

Although, Watford memorably won the last match between these sides with a 3-0 result here back in February 2020. Liverpool came into the match with a record of 26 wins and 1 draw after 27 games and the Hornets killed any hopes they had of matching Arsenal’s “Invincibles” record.

The win was Watford’s first in 9 games in this head-to-head. Liverpool had scored 15 goals without reply up to that point.

Watford vs Liverpool: Recommended bets

Liverpool’s last win over Watford was a 2-0 win at Anfield back in December 2019. 101 Great Goals’ prediction of a repeat of that scoreline here is available at odds of 7.5/1.

3-0 Watford win. As mentioned at the start of the article, Watford were 3-0 victors the last time these sides met here. A repeat of this score on Saturday looks unlikely based on the odds of 126/1.

1-1 draw. Watford’s last home match ended in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in their final match of September. Odds of 12/1 are available if you see Watford holding Liverpool to a point with the same result.

0-3 Liverpool win. Liverpool’s last win at Vicarage Road was back in November 2018. You can back them at 9.5/1 for the same 0-3 scoreline here on Saturday.

Over 2.5 goals. Watford vs Liverpool has typically been a high scoring game during the Jürgen Klopp era. Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Anfield in their title-winning season was actually the only match in the last 6 in this head-to-head not to produce over 2.5 goals. You can back another high scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 1.57/1 for over 2.5 goals.

Mohamed Salah Goalscorer. Salah (above) has scored in every away match so far this season in all competitions. This includes a brace against FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League in his last away day. The 29-years-old forward comes into this match in excellent form having scored in each of his last 7 Liverpool games including an early goal of the season contender against Manchester City at Anfield in his last match before the international break.

Salah also has previous against the Hornets, with an outrageous record of 8 goals and 2 assists in just 6 games. The ‘Egyptian King’ is the 4/1 favourite to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 1.72/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Watford.

Watford vs Liverpool: What are the betting odds?

Since these sides first faced each other back in 1967, Watford have never won back-to-back games against Liverpool. Despite this, the Hornets are 9/1 to take all 3 points from Liverpool on Saturday.

Whereas, the Reds have never gone 2 games without a win against Watford. They are 1.3/1 pick up an away win at Vicarage Road.

Liverpool have drawn their last 2 league matches. Odds of 5.5/1 are available if you see Watford and Liverpool cancelling each other out on Saturday to make it 3-in-a-row.

Watford vs Liverpool: Match preview

Saturday’s visit of Liverpool will be a baptism of fire for new Watford boss Claudio Ranieri. Ranieri returned to English football last week to replace Xisco, after the Spaniard was relieved of his duties by the Watford board following a 1-0 defeat to Leeds.

It is his 4th job in England after stints with Chelsea, Leicester and Fulham. His 2015/16 league title win remains the biggest upset in the Premier League era. However, more relevant to Watford perhaps, will be his most recent appointment at Fulham in which he won just 3 of 17 matches in charge before being dismissed, with only Huddersfield picking up fewer points than Fulham’s 12 in this period.

While Raneiri talked about his love for attacking football in his recent press conference, stating he wanted a “team that tries to score goals”, he is a pragmatist like many Italian coaches. The quickest and easiest improvements to make in a limited amount of time as a coach is in containment. Shutting down the space afforded to the opposition and hoping one of your pacey players can get you a goal on the counter.

Implementing a more attacking approach and particularly a possession-based one takes considerably more time. Certainly more than whatever sessions they have with players missing through international duty since his appointment last week.

Therefore, we expect to see a very compact Watford here looking to limit the space Liverpool have to play in, and asking them to try and unpick that lock.

For Liverpool, Mohamed Salah is in the sort of form that will likely answer whatever questions are asked of him right now. He kept the ball against 3 Man City players in an area of the pitch the size of a phonebox, before sitting a 4th down and lifting the ball over the desperate slide of a 5th last time out, in what is likely the 2021/22 goal of the season.

However, in Jones, Keita, Thiago, and Firmino, Liverpool have plenty of other players too who play their best football in small spaces, and who will likely be looked upon to provide the answers for the Reds on Saturday.

Watford team news vs Liverpool

Peter Etebo remains on the long-term injury list having torn a quad muscle towards the end of the Newcastle game. He is expected to be out for at least 4 months.

Francisco Sierralta picked up a hamstring injury during the game against Leeds and was replaced midway through the second half.

Christian Kabasele, who replaced Sierralta against Leeds, has also injured his hamstring and won’t be available to replace him here. Therefore William Troost-Ekong and Craig Cathcart are expected to form a partnership at the back for Ranieri’s first game in charge.

Joshua King is also a major doubt for this match. He was withdrawn at half-time against Leeds with a knee injury but hopefully, the international break came at the right time for him to recover. João Pedro will likely make his first start in the Premier League should King not recover sufficiently to start this match.

Liverpool team news vs Watford

Harvey Elliott remains on the long-term injury list following his horrific ankle injury against Leeds United. The talented teenager looks set to be out until 2022.

Fabinho and Alisson both look set to miss out on the trip to Watford due to international commitments. There was hope that the pair would be released after Brazil’s second match to reduce the amount of club football they would miss. However, Selecão boss Tite ruled this out, stating it was never a possibility as they were called up for all 3 matches.

It is likely we see Caoimhin Kelleher start between the sticks after his clean sheet against Norwich in the EFL Cup last month.

Fabinho will be replaced as number 6 by Jordan Henderson with Thiago, fitness permitting, or Naby Keita filling the usual right-sided number 8 space.

Diogo Jota faces a late fitness test to be involved here. The Portuguese forward returned early from international duty with a muscle problem. The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed he had been working on his conditioning since joining up with the squad, but wouldn’t be ready to be involved in their matches. Roberto Firmino is likely to replace Jota in the attack.

Divock Origi should also be available from the bench here, having recovered from the illness that kept him out of the squad that faced Manchester City prior to the international break.

A piece of positive news this week was forthcoming regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold (above). The young right-back was pictured back in training and is expected to replace James Milner here on the right-hand side of Liverpool’s defence.
