Betting prediction: Southampton 1-2 West Ham

Southampton has improved in their last two outings after their opening weekend defeat to Everton, with one of those results being a credible 1-1 draw against Manchester United. And yet, the Saints are probably not expected to get much from their home contest with a rampant West Ham outfit that has started the season brightly while being joint-top scorers in the Premier League with 10-goals in their first three fixtures. Amid the scintillating form of Michail Antonio and co., Southampton will certainly put up a fight, but West Ham should come out on top in the end in what could still be a close affair. 2-1.

Southampton vs West Ham: Recommended bets

Result/Both Teams to Score: West Ham – Yes (3/1 odds)

West Ham have begun in red hot attacking form this season, but have yet to keep a clean sheet, which has included chances against “lesser” opponents in Newcastle and Crystal Palace, so there is little reason to suggest that they will keep Southampton off the scoresheet here either. A win is a good bet regardless for a team that has looked to carry their form from last season over into the new campaign, however.

To Score Anytime: Said Benrahma

All the talk early doors this season when it comes to West Ham has justifiably circled around Michail Antonio, who has quickly become a brilliant late bloomer story as the Jamaica international tops the goalscoring charts at current. But Said Benrahma has quietly been very good this season as well, finally looking like his old self with form that is akin to his Brentford days, which ultimately netted him a Premier League move last season. With 2-goals this season already, Benrahma should have a chance to get at youngster Tino Livramento, and could find himself on the end of a few chances as a result.

Southampton vs West Ham: Match preview

Saints slowly starting to march as Southampton undefeated in two

It may not be three-point hauls, but Southampton have earned back-to-back draws recently after losing to Everton on opening day, and have looked improved in their performances overall; something which will undoubtedly please boss Ralph Hasenhüttl.

But despite the engine slowly beginning to rev this season, the Saints have yet to truly do enough to kick on in the Premier League, which comes as a shock given that the club is ranked 21st in the whole of Europe when it comes to transfer spending in the last decade.

Adam Armstrong has looked good early doors for the club after his move from Blackburn, and probably should have more than just the single goal to show for his efforts thus far. This good bit of business is a highlight of the Saints’ status as a club that is not afraid to splash the cash, but such numbers now need to produce results. A good result against West Ham would go a long way to not only getting the new campaign truly up and running, but to show that they are capable of competing for a mid-table or top-half finish.

West Ham look to stay on the move in the run-up to Europe

West Ham is showing early doors that last season was no fluke, as David Moyes’ troops lead the Premier League in goals, have the league’s current top goalscorer in Michail Antonio, and have taken seven points from a possible nine to kick-start the campaign.

The Irons’ success has brought Europe back to their neck of the woods, and a clash with Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday is just reward for a project at the London Stadium that has been a resounding success. The Hammers did well to spend this summer as well, adding much-needed depth in quality to a side that will want to give a good account of itself in the Europa League, and two of those summer signings – in Kurt Zouma and Nikola Vlašić – have finally begun to train with the first-team squad ahead of the weekend.

Neither will necessarily be forced into the matchday XI at St. Mary’s, but could come into the fold for their trip to Zagreb. On the whole, West Ham has shown other clubs in the country what the right vision, right approach in the market, and the right manager can all combine to achieve if you structure your project properly, and it has been lovely to watch.

Southampton team news vs West Ham

Ralph Hasenhüttl will not have too many personnel questions coming into the Saints’ weekend clash with West Ham at St. Mary’s.

Will Smallbone is still out through injury and will not be available. But apart from the youngster, it is just Shane Long (Covid-19) and Stuart Armstrong that stand as absentee members of the squad, though the latter may recover in time to possibly make the bench.

West Ham team news vs Southampton

David Moyes is blessed with a full squad to choose from as West Ham heads on a south coast day trip ready to ramp up their form before the club’s European campaign kicks off in midweek.

Fringe center-back Winston Reid is the only question mark for selection tomorrow, but the New Zealand international was hardly in line for a starting role to begin with. No changes are expected to the matchday XI apart from potential debuts for Kurt Zouma and Alphonse Areola.
