Southampton vs Sheffield United: Recommended bets
Southampton beat Sheffield United here 3-1 back in July. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 16/1.
Sheffield United beat the Saints 1-2 here when these clubs last faced each other in the Championship. You can back them at 16/1 for the same scoreline here on Sunday.
Southampton vs Sheffield United has historically been a low scoring game with 7 of the last 11 matches ending with under 2.5 goals. You can back another low scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 4/5 on for under 2.5 goals.
Having missed over a month of football due to a knee injury, Danny Ings (below) made a goal-scoring return to action last weekend against Brighton. Ings was introduced at half-time, ultimately netting the winning goal 9 minutes from full time. The England international is 5/2 to score the game’s opener on Sunday. Or 4/5 on to bag a goal at any time during the game against Sheffield United.
Southampton vs Sheffield United: Match preview
This was expected to be a battle to finish in the top-half of the table at the start of the season. These sides finished 11th and 9th respectively in the Premier League last season. However, Southampton come into Sunday’s match knowing a win would likely put them in the top-four.
While at the other end of the table, things are starting to look desperate for Sheffield United who are bottom and 5 points adrift of 19th placed West Brom. Even a win here would leave them at least 4 points from the safety of 17th place. Possibly much more if results go against them this weekend or should Burnley win their game in hand.
There is a long line of pundits queuing up to tell us what has gone wrong at Sheffield United. The stat that highlights it better than anything else is their 1 goal in open play this season. That goal was David McGoldrick’s 84th-minute consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat at the Emirates at the start of October.
Sheffield United: Wasteful Forwards
Ironically, he is probably the forward who has had the least opportunities to score this season. McGoldrick has had just 2 shots from open play inside the penalty box this season. Neither were closer to goal than the penalty spot and both with an xG of less than 0.05, or less than a 5% chance of resulting in a goal.
In comparison, record signing Brewster has had 3 open play shots in the box, including one big chance against West Brom, but has so far failed to find the net.
Fellow new-boy Oliver Burke has had 4 open play shots in the box, all with an xG between 0.05 and 0.15.
Billy Sharp missed their biggest chance this season, with his 71st minute shot from 4 yards out again Wolves failing to find the net.
However, Oliver McBurnie (above) has probably been the most wasteful of all. He has had 14 shots from open play this season, 12 of which were in the penalty area. He has missed 3 big chances and also hit the post against West Ham. In total, the xG for his shots equates to 1.89 yet he has so far drawn blank.
Overall, Sheffield United should be expected to score 8 to 9 goals from the quality of chances they have created in open play. To only have one goal from those chances is either atrocious finishing or some really bad variance.
Their underperformance is estimated to have cost them 9-10 points already this season; the difference between being 2 points behind Arsenal or 5 points adrift at the bottom of the table.
Southampton team news vs Sheffield United
Sam McQueen is the only player ruled out for the Saints at the weekend due to a cruciate ligament injury. The 25-year-old is yet to feature for Southampton this season and is expected to miss the rest of the season as he continues his rehab.
Danny Ings made a goalscoring return from the bench last weekend at Brighton. He is expected to be restored to the starting XI here with one of Moussa Djenepo or Theo Walcott making way.
Nathan Redmond (above) also made his return to action last weekend with a 21-minute cameo appearance. He is unlikely to start here but will surely be pressing Stuart Armstrong, Moussa Djenepo and Theo Walcott for one of the two starting positions on the flanks over a busy December.
Will Smallbone is nearing a return to action for the Saints. He’s been playing for their U23 side to build up some match fitness having not featured for the first team since the 2-5 defeat to Spurs.
Mohammed Salisu was named in his first Premier League squad for the Saints at the weekend. He is yet to feature for Southampton since making the £10.8m move back in August. Salisu should also get the chance during a busy December.
Sheffield United team news vs Southampton
The Blades are nearing a clean bill of health with Jack O’Connell the only player ruled out for the weekend. O’Connell likely won’t feature for the club again this season following an operation on his knee.
Lys Mousset (above) missed the first 3 months of the season due to a toe injury. He made a 16-minute appearance from the bench against West Brom but needed to be left out last weekend once more. Wilder is hopeful Mousset can be involved here and is rated at 50/50.
Enda Stevens has missed the last 3 matches for the Blades due to a knee injury. However, he is expected to be available this weekend. It is likely Stevens is eased back into the first team from the bench.
Ethan Ampadu has missed the last two weeks with a groin injury. He faces a late fitness test here and would likely replace Phil Jagielka on the substitutes bench.
