These sides share a remarkably even record in the Premier League. Their 38 meetings have seen 15 wins apiece and 8 draws.
Although, recently the matches between these two have been largely dominated by Newcastle. Southampton are without a win in over 4 ½ years. This includes 6 matches in total, losing all of the last 3 since Ralph Hasenhüttl joined the club.
However, Southampton come into this match as the form team. Their 13 points from 15 is the most claimed by any Premier League over the last 5 games. Newcastle, in contrast, have 8 points from 15 over the same period of time.

Southampton vs Newcastle United: Recommended bets
Southampton’s last home victory over Newcastle came back in April 2016 by a scoreline of 3-1. A repeat of this score on Friday is available at odds of 14/1.
Newcastle won the last match in this head-to-head 0-1 at St Mary’s Stadium was back in March. You can back them at 14/1 for the same scoreline here on Friday.
Recently, Southampton vs Newcastle has been a high scoring game with 9 of the last 11 matches in this head-to-head seeing over 2.5 goals. You can back another high scoring game here on Friday with odds of 4/5 for over 2.5 goals.
Callum Wilson was one of the players caught up in the penalty storm of last weekend. He both won and converted a penalty for Newcastle in their 2-1 win over Everton. Wilson now has 6 Premier League goals this season, 3 of which are from the penalty spot. The Geordies are 6/1 to score from the spot once again on Friday.

Southampton vs Newcastle United: Match preview
At the highest level in most sports, the outcome is often decided by a clash of styles rather than who is ‘better’ winning.
The fact that Ralph Hasenhüttl and Southampton got nothing from the two games against the Geordies last season would suggest this particular clash is a bad one for him, tactically. However, looking beyond the result, perhaps there is more here than meets the eye.
When they met at St Mary’s, back in March, the result was decided by an early red card to Moussa Djenepo of Southampton. It was a dangerous tackle, missing the ball and connecting mid-way up Hayden’s leg. He was rightly ejected from the game by the referee.
From there, the Magpies absolutely battered on the door, squandering 5 big chances including a missed penalty before Allan Saint-Maximin finally broke the deadlock 10 minutes from time.
The prior match at St James’ Park was an entirely different affair. It was a much cagier match with each team only creating one big chance in the match. Overall, Southampton were the better side and deserved a point, if not all 3, based on the chances created. Ryan Bertrand missing when scoring looked simpler right at the end of the match ultimately condemning them to defeat.
There is enough in that game though to suggest, with 11-men on the pitch, the Saints should win here on Friday. Of course, their problem at Newcastle last season was finishing chances and Danny Ings being ruled out until Christmas will not help them in that regard.
Whether Nathan Redmond, Theo Walcott, Che Adams or Shane Long can replace the England international’s goal output will probably determine the result of this match. And the Saints stay in the European places until Ings can return.
Southampton team news vs Newcastle United
The big news for Southampton this week surrounds Danny Ings (pictured above). There were fears he had ruptured his ACL last weekend after a bad fall, which would be his 3rd such injury in his career. However, scans revealed the injury was not as serious as first feared. The Saints will still be without their top scorer for 4-6 weeks as he requires surgery to repair some damage to his knee.
Sam McQueen is also ruled out as he continues his rehab from a cruciate ligament injury.
William Smallbone is also unavailable due to a quadriceps strain. He hasn’t played in the Premier League for the Saints since their 2-5 defeat to Spurs back in September.
Moussa Djenepo returned quickly from a hamstring injury to take a place on the bench at the weekend. With Danny Ings out, we could see Theo Walcott move to a more central role and Djenepo start on the wing.
Mohamed Salisu is nearing a return. However, having not played any football yet this season, he may need games for their U23 side to get some match fitness over the international break.
Ryan Bertrand is a doubt with a slight hamstring strain. As is Jan Bednarek due to a head injury.
Newcastle United team news vs Southampton
Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle, and Martin Dubravka remain on the long term injury list for Newcastle.
Jonjo Shelvey (pictured above) could also be out of action for a month after picking up a hernia injury.
“These days with the way hernia injuries are we are thinking it could be 3-4 weeks. After the international break we hope he’s there or thereabouts.”
– Steve Bruce, Newcastle United Manager
Ciaran Clark is nearing a return to action. He has been involved in Newcastle’s U23 side and was an unused substitute last weekend.
Isaac Hayden hasn’t started for the Magpies since coming off shortly after half-time against United complaining of a tightness in his hamstring. Bruce is managing his minutes and allowed him only a 7-minute cameo against Everton. He could make a return to the starting XI here.
