One win in eight games has Southampton again drifting towards the bottom of the league, with a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace the latest loss in what is becoming an all-too-familiar feeling for Saints fans.
However as has so often been the case under Ralph Hasenhuttl, they tend to pull an unexpected victory out of the hat when it is needed most and the visit of Newcastle on Sunday poses an intriguing encounter between two teams at the opposite end of the form table.
With just a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool before the World Cup break, it could be a huge game for Hasenhuttl and his future job prospects, with Southampton among a raft of clubs who could be potentially looking at using the enforced mid-season break to introduce a change in direction at the top of the club.
They must first get past Newcastle, one of the form sides in the Premier League and who under Eddie Howe are already dreaming of a top four finish - at least a year ahead of schedule under the new ownership.
Central to their recent form - five wins in seven games, with two draws in there - has been the performance of Miguel Almiron, who has beaten all expectations and assumptions to hit six goals in October - second only to Erling Haaland in the calendar month.
Howe has transformed the Paraguay winger into something of a Mo Salah-lite, and his ability to cut in and finish from his right-wing berth has added a whole new threat, along with the influence of Callum Wilson, who looks back to his best and determined to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s England plans.
