The Saints welcome Manchester United to St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton on Sunday for this Premier League match.
Manchester United have usually claimed the lion’s share of the points when these sides meet head-to-head. They have picked up 87 points from a maximum of 126 in Premier League history.
Southampton will also be aware they are without a win in this fixture in nearly 5 years; a run of 9 games stretching back to January 2016, in all competitions.
These teams shared the points in the two matches they met last season. This includes a 1-1 draw here back in August 2019 when Southampton came from behind to snatch a point.

Southampton vs Manchester United : What are the betting odds?

Manchester United have a 100% record on the road this season in the Premier League. They are also undefeated at St Mary’s in over 17 years. This sees them start the match as huge favourites at evens.
Four of the last five matches in this head-to-head, including both matches last season, have ended in a stalemate. Odds of 13/5 are available if you see Southampton and Manchester United cancelling each other out once again on Sunday.

Southampton vs Manchester United: Recommended bets
101 Great Goals’ prediction of Southampton 2 – 1 Manchester United is available at odds of 12/1.
Southampton’s last home victory over Manchester United came back in 2003 by a 1-0 scoreline. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 12/1.
Manchester United’s last win at St Mary’s Stadium was back in 2017. You can back them at 8/1 for the same 0-1 scoreline here on Sunday.
The Saints held Manchester United to a draw here last season, despite going behind and needing to play out the final 20 minutes with only 10 men. Odds of another 1-1 draw here are 13/2.
Three of the last four matches between these teams have seen at least 4 goals scored. You can back another high scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 4/5 on for over 2.5 goals.
Anthony Martial (above right) has yet to find the net in his 5 Premier League starts for United this season. However, he has 2 goals in 4 appearances in the Champions League. The French international is the favourite to score the game’s opener on Sunday at odds of 9/2. Or 11/8 to get his first league goal of the season at any time during the game against Southampton.

Southampton vs Manchester United: Match preview
Sunday’s early kick-off in the Premier League brings us one of the divisions strongest home sides versus one of it’s strongest away sides.
Southampton have won each of their last 3 home matches and are averaging 2.25 points per game at St Mary’s Stadium so far this season. Only Liverpool’s perfect record of 5 wins from 5 at fortress Anfield can better this.
Manchester United, on the other hand, are 1 of 3 teams that can boast a 100% away record in the Premier League this season. Spurs have won 4 from 4 so far this season, while Villa and United have both won 3 from 3.
However, there are major concerns at United about their misfiring forward line. Marcus Greenwood has been in the newspapers recently allegedly due to concerns over his attitude to training. Although his manager has since moved to play down such rumours.
What cannot be denied though is his struggle in front of goal this season. He is yet to find the net in the Premier League for United this season in 5 appearances. He hasn’t looked like scoring either, with just 0.59 xG across his 5 games, or 0.19xG per 90. He is yet to get into a scoring position that Opta would deem a ‘big chance’.
Anthony Martial is having similar issues in front of goal, without the media speculating about his professionalism. He is also yet to find the net in his 5 Premier League starts for United this season. The concern will not so much be that he hasn’t scored, more that he isn’t even getting into positions to do so.
He has had just four shots from open play this season, only 2 of which were in the opponent’s box. Neither of which were closer to the opponent’s goal than the penalty spot.
This raises doubts that the issue is a personnel one, suggesting it is more of a problem with the system. Regardless of the underlying problem though, it is difficult for any team to achieve its targets without its forwards scoring goals. So, it is a problem United and Solskjaer will need to find a solution to soon.

Southampton team news vs Manchester United
There was positive news this week from Southampton on the rehabilitation of Danny Ings.
“Danny is back in individual training, so I think he can be an option for the Brighton game. But not this weekend.”
– Ralph Hasenhüttl, Southampton Manager (pictured above)
Sam McQueen is also ruled out as he continues his rehab from a cruciate ligament injury.
William Smallbone and Mohamed Salisu are unavailable. However, both are back in the team training sessions and should feature for the club in their December matches.
Nathan Redmond missed the 1-1 draw with Wolves last weekend due to a hamstring injury. He is ruled out for the weekend and is a doubt for the following match against Brighton also.

Manchester United team news vs Southampton
Central defensive duo Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are yet to play for United in the Premier League this season. Neither will be involved in this match and it remains to be seen whether they will be available for United’s busy Christmas period.
Luke Shaw is continuing his rehab from a thigh injury. The most recent updates suggest he is likely 2 weeks away from a return to action.
Eric Bailly is perhaps the defender nearest to a return to action for United. He hasn’t featured in the league since the 1-6 defeat against Spurs.
Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay are major doubts for this match. This means despite Donny van de Beek’s impressive midweek performance, Nemanja Matic and Fred are likely to continue in the heart of midfield for United.
“Scott and Paul didn’t train this morning. They were not on the grass so they are very unlikely for the weekend.”
– Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United Manager (pictured above)
Jesse Lingard has now completed his isolation period due to COVID-19 and is available for selection once again.
Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford were all withdrawn against Istanbul Basaksehir in midweek as a precautionary measure. Ole confirmed all three completed the last training session and should be available for this match, despite not being 100%.
