Betting prediction: Southampton 0-2 Liverpool
Liverpool have drawn five of their last nine Premier League matches. With Manchester United level on points, the Reds can ill afford to drop more points on Monday night.
Southampton and Liverpool were both held to goalless draws last time out. Hopefully, we’ll see a bit more goalmouth action at St. Mary’s.
Liverpool have a great recent record against Southampton. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won each of their last six matches against the Saints, by an aggregate scoreline of 17-2.
Southampton vs Liverpool: Recommended bets
Under 2.5 goals. Each of Southampton’s last four matches have produced fewer than three goals. Five of Liverpool’s last six away matches in all competitions have featured fewer than three goals – notwithstanding their mammoth 7-0 win at Crystal Palace.
Liverpool to keep a clean sheet. Southampton are struggling for goals at the minute and have failed to score in any of their last three. Despite fielding a makeshift defence, Liverpool have kept back-to-back away clean sheets.
Sadio Mane to score. The former Saints winger isn’t having his most prolific season although he has netted twice in his last three appearances.

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND – DECEMBER 13: Che Adams of Southampton celebrates with teammates Jannik Vestergaard, Danny Ings and Theo Walcott after scoring their team’s first goal during the Premier League match between Southampton and Sheffield United at St Mary’s Stadium on December 13, 2020 in Southampton, England. A limited number of spectators (2000) are welcomed back to stadiums to watch elite football across England. This was following easing of restrictions on spectators in tiers one and two areas only. Southampton vs Liverpool: Premier League preview
Southampton welcome Liverpool to St. Mary’s on Monday night.
Despite consecutive draws, Liverpool hold a narrow advantage at the top of the table. The Reds’ +17 goal difference is all that’s keeping them above Manchester United, who are also on 33 points.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League games, but there have been far too many draws for Jurgen Klopp’s liking.
Liverpool’s problems on the road
While they have a near-perfect record at Anfield, Liverpool have been well below part away from home. The Reds’ away form ranks 11th in the league, with just two wins from their eight matches on the road. Liverpool have drawn five of their last six away games.
Southampton were held to a 0-0 draw at home to West Ham last week – their second consecutive goalless draw. The point leaves Southampton 9th in the table, level on 26 points with Chelsea, Aston Villa, West Ham, and Manchester City.
Goal-shy Southampton
Southampton have failed to score a goal in any of their last three matches. In fairness to the Saints, they have picked up points in five of their last six matches. Southampton’s home record ranks 6th in the league, with four wins and a draw from eight matches at St. Mary’s.
Southampton and Liverpool have faced each other 42 times in the Premier League. Liverpool have won 22 of those games, drawing 10 and losing 10.
Liverpool beat Southampton 4-0 in their most recent meeting in February last year. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson, and Mohamed Salah (2) were all on the scoresheet at Anfield.
Southampton team news vs Liverpool
The big news for Southampton is that goalie Alex McCarthy is out of the Liverpool game after contracting Covid.
As a result, McCarthy is likely to be missing for the Saints for the next few weeks.
Fraser Forster is set to start in goal for Southampton in McCarthy’s absence.
Che Adams is available for selection despite being withdrawn against West Ham last Tuesday.
Thankfully Adams did not suffer any lasting effects after being accidentally kicked in the head by West Ham’s Craig Dawson. That said, Adams has started every game for Southampton this season and is due a rest soon.
Also, Che Adams hasn’t been spotted at Southampton’s training in the build-up to the Liverpool game.
It would be no surprise if Adams was missing against Liverpool. Shane Long could start instead.
Meanwhile, Nathan Redmond has a muscle injury and is doubtful for Monday night.
Stuart Armstrong could be recalled to the side, with Moussa Djenepo at risk of being rotated.
Jannik Vestergaard will miss at least four weeks with a knee injury. Ralph Hasenhuttl is set to field the same back four that has kept consecutive clean sheets.
Former Liverpool forward Danny Ings is set to face his old club. Having only just returned from injury, Ings is unlikely to play the full 90.
Liverpool team news vs Southampton
Liverpool will be without three central defenders on Monday as Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, and former Saints man Virgil van Dijk are all sidelined.
Nathaniel Phillips could keep his place alongside Fabinho in Liverpool’s starting eleven, although 19-year-old Rhys Williams is another option.
Fit-again Thiago Alcantara could be handed a start in midfield, with James Milner or Curtis Jones giving way. Gini Wifjnaldum should also be recalled.
Diogo Jota is “making good progress” in his recovery from a knee injury, but won’t be available until February.
Back-up left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas remains sidelined with a knee injury, while Naby Keita is ruled out with a muscle injury.
Sadio Mane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both in contention to face their former club.
