Southampton vs Leeds United betting tips: Preview, predictions & odds

Southampton has a chance to finish the season as high as twelfth if things go their way, and though this has been largely a forgettable campaign, it would still serve as a reminder that they have it in them to be a much better version of themselves. They welcome Leeds United to St. Mary's, who - like Saints - have won their last two on the spin and have a mathematical chance at climbing up as high as seventh if their form continues.

Betting prediction: Southampton 2-3 Leeds United

With the season coming to an end, it would hardly be a surprise if a high-scoring thriller could find its way amongst the remaining fixtures. Both Southampton and Leeds United are capable in front goal on their day, headlined by key men Danny Ings and Patrick Bamford, with capable supporting casts around them in the likes of Raphinha, Jack Harrison, Che Adams, and James Ward-Prowse. Both sides have hit high goal tallies in their last two wins on the spin, with Saints bagging 6-goals while Leeds United has one more and sits on seven. Neither side has been brilliant at the back on the whole (in fact, Saints have been dire), so an entertaining match in front of goal could be the result.

Southampton vs Leeds United: Recommended bets

Result/Both Teams to Score: Leeds United – Yes

Though Leeds United has improved at the back in recent weeks and is coming in on the back of a resounding 4-0 thrashing of Burnley, the absence of both Mateusz Klich and Robin Koch are considerable losses in the clubs’ ability to keep their opponent silent. Southampton has found their scoring touch of late as well, hitting both Fulham and Crystal Palace for 3-goals a piece, so there is scope to suggest that neither walks away with a clean sheet here, but Leeds has been the better outfit and under Marcelo Bielsa, more balanced. I would suspect they would be a good bet for three points.

To Score Anytime: Jack Harrison

Jack Harrison is arguably the unsung heroes of the season for Leeds United. No other English midfielder has more total goal contributions than the on-loan Manchester City asset, whose 8-goals and 8-assists and countless influential performances have been vital for Marcelo Bielsa’s outfit this season. Patrick Bamford and Raphinha will always draw attention, but Harrison is joint-second in goals this season and is coming off the back of a brilliant display against Burnley which could put him in line to be amongst the goals once more.

Southampton vs Leeds United: Match preview

It is too little too late for Southampton to achieve anything in 2020-21, but their recent back-to-back wins against Fulham and Crystal Palace could offer some semblance of encouragement as the club moves into the summer. For the first time since December, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men strung together two wins on the spin, bagging six goals in the process and what can be described as a credible show of force from an outfit that has gone through a horrific spell after the opening seventeen rounds of the Premier League saw Saints dreaming of Europe while posting an 8-5-4 record.

But the resulting fixtures have read more like a nightmare for the St. Mary’s outfit, with the next nineteen outings yielding only four wins fourteen points from a possible fifty-seven on offer. I other words, Southampton has been one of the worst sides in the Premier League after such a hopeful beginning to the campaign, chiefly due to the paper-thin nature of the squad available to their charismatic Austrian headmaster. But a late run of form to close out the term could come with an immeasurable value while indicating that the club is not on the verge of flat-lining in the Premier League.

Questions surrounding the future of key center forward Danny Ings, but despite the lack of depth, Saints’ strongest XI over the course of the season has been one that is vastly superior to what results have been since mid-January. Many likely would not even complain if Southampton fails to take anything off Leeds as long as the performance was of a decent standard. But with two matches left and a mathematical chance at finishing 12th, under the circumstances, most would happily take it given what the alternative could have been.

Leeds United improving; should anyone be surprised?

“We played more matches in the Championship in the last two seasons and we were fine. People said we would burn out because of our intensity but our squad is getting stronger. Players have come back from injury and it is a bigger squad now. We can still run. It is not fair when people say we will burn out.” – Mateusz Klich

Though the Premier League gets all the plaudits regarding just how difficult the league is over the course of an incredibly long season, so often the Championship gets overlooked from eyes outside of England’s borders. Make no mistake; the Championship is without a doubt even more physically and mentally demanding than the Premier League, with just as much parody in quality across a multitude of its sides. Perhaps it is not entirely surprising then clubs like Burnley and Sheffield United performed so well in their recent returns to the English top-flight, with Wolves offering up the most sustainable example of the same; finishing 7th in each of their first two seasons back in the Premier League. At current, Leeds United is keeping that trend alive, and even if pundits may be surprised, supporters and players are not.

The high-octane football under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa was billed as maybe the club’s biggest weakness in the run-up to the season. No one denied the quality of football or how effective Leeds are as an attacking outfit, and though many managers before the Argentine have championed playing above the speed limit for the duration of a season (Jürgen Klopp comes to mind), playing this brand of football successfully in the Championship has prepared Leeds to go through it at the highest level in England and has not shown any signs of slowing down.

If the club successfully goes through another summer spending period that sees them strengthen the squad in terms of depth, then the possibility that the club will challenge for the European places is hardly out of the realm of possibility. At current, Leeds could finish as high as seventh if results – and goal difference – goes their way. If they can keep the nucleus of the squad together, there is little to stop Bielsa from achieving similar things to Nuno Espirito Santo at the Molineux. It has been a breath of fresh air having Leeds United back in the top flight of English football, and it would be an even bigger one if they started to flirt with the heights they once achieved under David O’Leary, George Graham, and Howard Wilkinson.

Southampton team news vs Leeds United

Ralph Hasenhüttl will be looking to push Southampton to keep their recent run and finish strong in what has been a disappointing 2020-21 Premier League campaign.

Ryan Bertrand, Oriol Romeu, and Will Smallbone are all still missing from selection through injury, while Jan Bednarek is still listed as a doubt. Otherwise, Saints should have a strong XI fielded, which could include Danny Ings once again.

Leeds United team news vs Southampton

Marcelo Bielsa will have some pre-planned decisions ahead when Leeds United travels south to visit Southampton at St. Mary’s.

Both Mateusz Klich and Robin Koch have been given the rest of the season off as both are in preparations for potential call-ups for Poland and Germany for Euro 2020, while Hélder Costa and Adam Forshaw remain out of contention. Pablo Hernández faces a late assessment but could still make the bench.
