Southampton vs Fulham betting tips: Preview, predictions & odds

Few will be happy with the manner Southampton have puttered across the finish line in a 2020-21 Premier League campaign that did more harm than good regarding sentiments around the clubs' ability to pick itself up and push forward in an increasingly difficult top flight. Three points should be the only acceptable result when they host a Fulham side that has booked accommodations in the Championship next season but may well be free to express themselves with nothing to play for.

Southampton vs Fulham: Recommended bets

Result/Both Teams to Score: Southampton – Yes

Though neither side has anything to play for on the surface, Southampton will at the very least look to try to finish the season on some sort of high after what has been a rather poor display from the south coast outfit as they continue to be left behind while others have pushed themselves into considerable top-half contention. A three-point haul against a Fulham side who have their place booked in the Championship is the only acceptable outcome, but they should prove tough customers as always given that many of those who will be selected by Scott Parker could well be fighting for their place in the XI come next season when the promotion campaign begins. Saints are woeful at the back so Fulham should still manage to get on the scoresheet, but Southampton should be able to peg the result.

To Score Anytime: Stuart Armstrong

With a handful of good goals scored this season already, Scottish international Stuart Armstrong could play a big role on the day for Southampton with an expected appearance alongside James Ward Prowse in the center of the park. Armstrong’s strong ability to get forward into the area could put him on the end of chances after space has been created by the expected mobile forward pair of Theo Walcott and Che Adams.

Southampton vs Fulham: Match preview

There is not a terrible amount that can be said about Southampton during the 2020-21 Premier League campaign as feelings of ambivalence can largely be felt across the fanbase as well as anyone that analyses them. Danny Ings remained one of the only bright spots in a campaign that resulted in the joint-second worst defensive record in the league, and the constant reminder that, while Ralph Hasenhüttl is a highly capable custodian, even someone of the Austrian’s pedigree cannot fight a three-alarm blaze with a water pistol.

Like a handful of other clubs in the top flight of English football, Saints are desperate for badly-needed depth if they are to survive the rigors of the most arduous fixture calendar in the European game. Though they started quite well in the opening few months of the season, the complete nose dive the club endured – only managing to level out with enough time to pull up – is a harsh lesson on how it can all go so wrong so quickly. And so often, it is not recoverable at all.

Saints need investment and of that, there is no doubt, but they also need long-standing tactical tweaks by Hasenhüttl that can manage any semblance of squad depth he manages to acquire in the summer. If a better balance can be struck between club spending and what is expected on the pitch regarding their direction, there is still every chance they can arrest their troubles from the current season and bounce back next term. Getting some decent results over the course of the last handful of fixtures certainly would do a world of good in actively showing progression towards improvement in 2021-22.

Immediate return to Premier League for Fulham may be tricky

Despite their best efforts this season, Fulham failed to avoid the drop right back down to the Championship after confirming their relegation when they lost 2-0 to Burnley on Monday night. While it is certainly commendable that the club hierarchy intends to back the former England international with funds to push the club right back up into the Premier League in a planned promotion campaign in 2021-22, how the Cottagers intend to replicate some of the business they undertook this past summer will certainly play a key role in defining how well their plans come off in the end.

The loss of Premier League status makes it that much more difficult for the club to target players of the mold they achieved to bring in, and the club certainly may have to be that much more astute if they are to rectify the problem. Crafty loan deals for Josh Maja, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Alphonse Areole, Joachim Andersen, Ademola Lookman, Ola Aina, and Mario Lemina all signaled real intent by the club, In addition, full deals for the likes of Harrison Reed, Kenny Tete, and Tosin Adarabioyo, showed continued resourcefulness yet it still was not enough to keep the club up at the end of the day.

Now with relegation confirmed, and a host of key players returning to their parent clubs and little hope that the likes of Andersen, Areole, Lookman, Loftus-Cheek, Lemina, or Aina will be returning to Craven Cottage, a brutal rebuilding job could be on the cards for Scott Parker and the club brass. Still and yet, Parker recently spoke about the need for the players to show pride regardless of their failed attempt at building a foundation for remaining in the top flight next term, and that same requisite pride could make or break the futures of those who will be donning the white and black kits next term.

Southampton team news vs Fulham

Ralph Hasenhüttl finds himself short of trusted center midfield options when Southampton hosts relegated Fulham at the weekend, with both Will Smallbone and Oriol Romeu out with injuries.

Ryan Bertrand – all but guaranteed to be out the door in the summer – is also unfit for service for the clash at St. Mary’s, while Jan Bednarek is expected to miss out and is listed as a doubt.

Fulham team news vs Southampton

Scott Parker will have to plan for life back down in the Championship after Fulham hit a poor run of form over their last seven outings and consigned themselves to the drop.

There are two players who are guaranteed to be unavailable in Terence Kongolo and Mario Lemina, while both Tom Cairney and Harrison Reed are also unexpected to be recovered in time.
