Southampton vs Burnley betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Southampton vs Burnley prediction: Southampton 2-0 Burnley

Both sides have made some decent signings in the summer transfer window but will it be enough to make the difference this season?

The two teams had differing emotions last season as Burnley had the best season it has had in recent history, and Southampton suffered one of the worst.

Now, as the new season gets underway, Burnley may already have tired legs due to their Europa League campaign.

Southampton vs Burnley: Who will win?

The Saints actually go into the game as heavy favourites to win the game with odds of 17/20 at the time of writing.

Sean Dyche’s men go into the game at incredible odds of 4/1 due to potential fatigue after playing in the Europa League on Thursday.

Southampton new boy Mohamed Elyounoussi, who signed from Basel for £16million, can be found at odds of 13/2 to score first.

Burnley’s new forward Matej Vydra may also fancy himself to score first, should he play, and is priced at odds of 17/2 to score first, the same odds as Sam Vokes.

You can get under 2.5 goals to be scored at odds of 3/5.

Southampton vs Burnley match preview

Southampton and Burnley might not look great on paper but it could be a great game.

Mark Hughes goes into the season off the back of keeping his side in the Premier League by the skin of their teeth.

The Saints looked like they were going down but the former Stoke City boss was able to turn it around just in time.

Now, they are looking to make sure that doesn’t happen again and while their transfer business hasn’t been spectacular, it’s been solid.

On paper, Southampton replaced Dusan Tadic with Celtic’s Stuart Armstrong, Sofiane Boufal with Mohamed Elyounoussi and also added Jannik Vestergaard.

All their signings are good, but the only worry is whether they will adapt to the Premier League and how long it will take.

They also added Danny Ings on deadline day to give them some much-needed firepower.

Hughes will now be hoping that some of the existing players will step up to the plate this season while the new boys find their rhythm.

European tour to play havoc with Burnley?

It’s pretty well known that 7th place and just reaching a Europa League spot can sometimes be a burden.

It was a huge achievement for Sean Dyche’s side, that cannot be understated, but it isn’t all positive.

That is because Burnley’s season started weeks ago and as Everton fans will tell you from last season, it really can take a toll.

The side even played on Thursday evening, playing out a 0-0 draw with İstanbul Başakşehir, just three days before their Premier League campaign gets underway.

Having only signed three players, Matej Vydra, Joe Hart and Ben Gibson, it begs the question whether Dyche’s side have the squad to compete in four competitions this season.

With that in mind, they may well struggle early on in the season to adapt to the demands of being in Europe and performing in the league.

That could certainly see Southampton with the edge this weekend.

Southampton team news vs Burnley

Cedric Soares recently recovered from illness and could be set to play while a decision will need to be made as whether to start deadline day signing Danny Ings or not.

Apart from that, there are no other injury worries for the Saints.

Burnley team news vs Southampton

Burnley go into the game with some big worries.

Chris Wood missed the game against İstanbul Başakşehir on Thursday due to an infected insect bite and could miss out on Sunday.

Robbie Brady and Steven Defour are also expected to miss the game due to injury.

There is some good news for Tom Heaton, who has returned from a calf injury and will want to beat Joe Hart to a starting spot.
