Southampton vs Brighton prediction: Southampton 1-2 Brighton
Almost all the indicators point towards a Brighton defeat, but we are backing Chris Hughton’s side to bag a rare away win.
Brighton are yet to score an away goal this season, much less pick up a point. The Seagulls’ winless run away from home stretches back 16 matches.
Southampton’s home form doesn’t make for great reading either, however. The Saints have won just one of their last 13 home matches in the league.
Southampton vs Brighton: Who will win?
Southampton are 11/10 favourites to win the match, with Brighton priced at 3/1 to win the game. The draw can be backed at 23/10.
Brighton are yet to keep a clean sheet this season, while Southampton conceded two in their last home match to Leicester. Both teams to score is 19/20.
Here is one goalscoring pick from each side: Danny Ings is 11/2 to open the scoring while Glenn Murray is 11/4 to score anytime.
Southampton vs Brighton Premier League match preview
Southampton host Brighton & Hove Albion for Monday night’s Premier League clash at St Mary’s.
The two sides are level on four points, having each won one, drawn one and lost two of their opening four matches. Southampton are one place above Brighton due to a superior goal difference.
Prior to the international break, Southampton beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park. Danny Ings opened the scoring for Mark Hughes’ side, before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg doubled the lead late on.
Brighton, meanwhile, came from 2-0 down to rescue a point at home to Fulham. Glenn Murray scored both goals for the Seagulls in the second half.
Southampton have already beaten Brighton this season
Brighton and Southampton met in the second round of the Carabao Cup less than a month ago at the Amex Stadium. Charlie Austin scored the only goal of the game in the 88th minute.
Not too much can be read into that result as both managers fielded heavily rotated sides.
The two matches between Brighton and Southampton last season both finished in 1-1 draws.
Glenn Murray scored Brighton’s goal on each occasion while Jack Stephens scored for the Saints in the corresponding fixture.
Brighton ended the campaign four points and two positions above Southampton.
Southampton team news vs Brighton
Southampton have a clean bill of health following the international break.
Hughes confirmed that Danny Ings needed injections to play through the pain caused by a blister on his foot. However, “there are no more problems with that” and the striker is expected to start on Monday.
Shane Long and Charlie Austin have both returned to full training following toe and hamstring injuries respectively. One of the two should partner Ings up front.
Midfielder Mario Lemina was given permission to miss Gabon’s midweek friendly and returned to training early.
Jan Bednarek has a minor ongoing foot problem but the defender remains available.
Brighton team news vs Southampton
Brighton are in a similar position with no real injury concerns.
Pascal Gross had an ankle problem but Hughton is “sure he will be fine”.
Florin Andone, who is yet to make his Brighton debut, featured for the U23s in midweek.
Bruno Saltor and Jose Izquierdo have both returned to full training following hamstring and knee injuries respectively.
Dale Stephens will face his former club. The midfielder made 6 league appearances for Southampton during a brief loan spell at the Saints in 2011.
