Southampton vs Brentford betting tips: Premier League preview, predictions and odds

Can Southampton continue their upturn in form?

This is the Saints’ first Premier League fixture of 2022 after, in their last outing, holding Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw.

James Ward-Prowse opened the scoring with a stunning half-volley but, after Mohammed Salisu was sent off, they had to work hard for the point.

That draw means Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side have only lost one of their last six but they’ve also only won one of those fixtures.

Nevertheless, over the festive period, the Saints have battled to a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace and beaten West Ham 3-2 at the London Stadium.

Jan Bednarek’s late header in the latter securing their only victory since 5 November.

Nevertheless, they’re still 14th, ten points clear of the relegation zone.

More recently than any of that, Southampton were in FA Cup action on Saturday evening at an eerily empty Liberty Stadium.

Despite taking the lead through Nathan Redmond, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Championship side Swansea City, so extra time followed.

A Bednarek own goal then put the Swans in front but Mohamed Elyounoussi equalised mere seconds after the restart, before forgotten man Shane Long bagged the winner.

Last season’s FA Cup semi-finalists will face second-tier opposition again in the fourth round as they host Coventry City.

Before then, can they get three more Premier League points on the board?

So far this season, Hasenhüttl’s team have only lost once at home, a 1-0 defeat to Wolves back in September.

However, they’ve also only won two of their nine home fixtures, with the last three finishing all square.

Will Southampton win a home game for the first time in 67 days?

Will Brentford win away?

Brentford meanwhile kick off two places and two points above the Premier League’s other red and white wearing side.

That’s because the Bees were last in league action nine days ago and they enjoyed another dramatic victory at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Even though they fell behind early against Aston Villa, Yoane Wissa’s stunning curling strike levelled things up on the cusp of the interval.

A winner felt as though it was brewing in the second 45 and one finally came late on when, at the second attempt, Mads Roerslev Rasmussen slotted home.

Delight for Thomas Frank’s side as, despite the fact that was only their third win in 12, it leaves the newly-promoted side a whopping 12 clear of danger.

Now, can Brentford secure successive top-flight victories for the first time since September 1946?

Admittedly, they were out of the top divisions for the intervening 74 years.

Slightly more recently, on Saturday afternoon in fact, the Bees travelled to League Two Port Vale in the FA Cup third round.

Marcus Forss opened the scoring at Vale Park before Bryan Mbeumo bagged a hat-trick, in the space of 21 minutes, to secure a 4-1 win in Staffordshire.

They’ll now travel to Everton in round four.

Before then, Brentford will look to continue their impressive record away at Southampton.

Their last two trips to St Mary’s have both resulted in 2-0 away wins, in League One in 2010 and a League Cup tie last season.

If they’re to win this one, late goals might be a feature, given that no one has scored more winning goals in the final ten minutes of games than the Bees’ three in this campaign.

Will Thomas Frank’s side win in Hampshire?

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side could be at a serious physical disadvantaged, given that they had to play 120 minutes on Saturday evening.

They also did so with ten-men for an hour and a half of this two hour period after Yan Valery’s red card; he is therefore suspended.

In goal, with Alex McCarthy injured, Fraser Forster will continue to don the gloves with Willy Caballero the back-up on the bench.

In defence, they’re very short of right-backs given that Valery is suspended, while Tino Livramento has a knee injured and Kyle Walker-Peters tested positive for Covid-19.

The good news is that Mohammed Salisu is back after his ban so could return in the middle, alongside Jan Bednarek, with Jack Stephens filling in on the right.

Lyanco is the other centre-back option.

At the base of midfield, as always, will be Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse.

The latter is looking to score in in four consecutive league matches for the very first time, having netted against Crystal Palace, West Ham and Spurs.

Further forward in midfield, in the usual 4-2-2-2, Mohamed Elyounoussi could come in alongside Stuart Armstrong, but they do have options.

This would see Nathan Tella and Nathan Redmond drop down to the bench; Moussa Djenepo is away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Mali.

In attack, Adam Armstrong could return to partner Armando Broja with Shane Long, despite scoring against Swansea, remaining as a substitute.

Ché Adams is still injured.

Will the Saints’ decent form continue?

Brentford meanwhile, despite also being in action on Saturday, made more change than their hosts and, crucially, weren’t forced to play extra time.

In goal, Thomas Frank has a decision to make.

Álvaro Fernández had been deputising since David Raya’s injury but Jonas Lössl made his debut for the club in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The former Huddersfield and Everton goalkeeper has arrived from Danish league-leaders Midtjylland on loan, a club also owned by Matthew Benham.

So, one can assume Lössl has come to London to play, meaning he’s likely to be given the gloves for this one.

In defence, Kristoffer Ajer made his first appearance since 24 October on Saturday and was taken off after an hour to ease him back.

The Norwegian could start once again here, alongside Ethan Pinnock and Pontus Jansson, the latter taking Mads Bech Sørensen’s place.

At wing-back, after scoring the winner against Aston Villa, Mads Roerslev Rasmussen will return at right-wing-back, in place of teenager Fin Stevens.

On the other side, with Rico Henry injured, Dominic Thompson will continue to deputise.

In the middle, Frank Onyeka is away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria who kick off their campaign earlier on Tuesday.

Without him, Vitaly Janelt could line-up alongside Christian Nørgaard and Mathias Jensen; Shandon Baptiste is the alternative.

In attack, Frank has a collection of inform strikers to choose from but Bryan Mbeumo’s hat-trick on Saturday will surely see him partner Ivan Toney.

Although, Marcus Forss and Yoane Wissa, who scored against Port Vale and Aston Villa respectively, are viable alternatives.

Will the Bees be buzzing after an away win?
