The Blades welcome Southampton to Bramall Lane in Sheffield on Saturday for this Premier League match.

Historically, Sheffield United have the slight upper hand in the head-to-head, with 13 wins to Southampton’s 12, from their 30 encounters in all competitions.

However, only 3 of these matches occurred in the last 5 years, with Southampton winning all 3 contests.

Sheffield United have only defeated the Saints once in the Premier League; the first meeting between them in 1992 since the competition was rebranded. Although, they have defeated Southampton in the Championship and League Cup since then.

Sheffield United vs Southampton: Recommended bets

Sheffield United’s last home victory over Southampton came in the Carabao Cup Quarter-Final back in December 2014 by a 1-0 scoreline. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 8/1.

Southampton won 0-1 on their visit to Bramall Lane towards the start of last season. You can back them at 13/2 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Recent Sheffield United vs Southampton matches at Bramall Lane have been low scoring games with just 2 goals in total across all 3 matches. Additionally, the majority of games for both sides this season (58%) have been under 2.5 goal games. You can back another low scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 4/6 on for under 2.5 goals.

No player has more goals in this fixture than Che Adams, with 3 goals. He ended the 2019/20 season with a brace against Sheffield United, including what proved to be the winning goal.

Adams also scored the first, and ultimately winning goal, in the Saints’ 3-0 win back in December. The 24-year-old striker hasn’t scored for Southampton since that day. You can back Adams to resume scoring against his former club at 11/5. Or find odds of 6/1 for him to score the game’s opener as he did earlier in the season.

Sheffield United vs Southampton: What are the betting odds?

The Blades haven’t defeated Southampton in the Premier League since 1992. Also, no team has a worse home record in the Premier League this season than Sheffield United, who have just 10 points from 14 matches. They start the game as 21/10 underdogs.

The Saints have won each of the last 3 matches between these sides, including a 3-0 victory when they faced each other at St Mary’s Stadium earlier this season. They are the 6/5 favourites to win once again.

Only 1 of the last 11 matches between these sides, in all competitions, has ended in a draw. Odds of 13/5 are available if you see Sheffield United and Southampton cancelling each other out on Saturday.

Sheffield United vs Southampton: Match preview

The Saints will be wishing the season could have ended at the mid-point after 19 games.

After a flying start to the season, which saw them sit in the top-4 for a while, they have suffered a collapse and are now at risk of being dragged into a relegation battle if their current form persists. They have picked up just 1 point from their last 9 matches.

Fulham, who currently reside in the relegation zone 7 points below the Saints, have picked up 9 points from their last 5 games. Newcastle, Brighton and Burnley are also picking up enough points to leapfrog Southampton if things continue at the same rate.

In contrast, Sheffield United fans must be wishing the 2020 part of the season could be written off with the season starting instead at the beginning of 2021. The Blades would currently be in 16th place had the season started at the beginning of this year.

Sadly, for Sheffield United, it didn’t and their run of 2 points from their first 17 games of the season will likely result in their relegation.

Ordinarily, rotation would play a big part in how these sides line-up for this one. Chris Wilder has named the same goalkeeper, defence and midfield in back-to-back games. The red card against Villa means at least one change. For the majority of the players though, this will be the 3rd start in 6 days for them. However, injuries mean he may have little scope to rest and rotate his option.

For Southampton, the injuries are also starting to pile up now which has coincided with the collapse in their performances and results on the pitch.

Alex McCarthy and Jack Stephens were the only senior players on the bench for the trip to Goodison. Both of whom are in a position where there isn’t much need to rest and rotate players ordinarily. The rest of the bench was comprised of players who started the season playing for Southampton’s reserve or under-18 sides and had an average age of just 20 years old.

Sheffield United team news vs Southampton

Phil Jagielka is ruled out following his red card against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Enda Stevens is expected to move to the left centre back spot, with Max Lowe coming into the side at left wing-back for only his second start of 2021.

Jack O’Connell was originally ruled out for the season with an ACL injury. However, he is back in training and the club hope he can make an early return in April.

John Egan dislocated a toe while attempting to block a shot towards the end of United’s 3-0 defeat to West Ham. The injury will require surgery that will likely rule him out until the end of April.

Chris Basham is also out having pulled his hamstring in the second half against Fulham. He is expected back on the pitch before the end of the month.

Jack Robinson suffered a foot injury against Burnley back in 2020 which still hasn’t fully healed. No return date has been provided for him as a result as of yet.

Sander Berge suffered a serious hamstring injury against Manchester United in December. He won’t return for the Blades until April at the earliest.

Jayden Bogle is ruled out following a horrific challenge from Fulham’s Alphonse Areola. Fortunately, despite the similarity to the challenge with the one by Pickford on van Dijk, Bogle is expected to only be out a few weeks, much to the relief of Chris Wilder.

Jack Rodwell is also ruled out having suffered a heavy fall in training.

Lys Mousset has had a season interrupted with injuries. He is been an unused substitute the last 2 games and could get his first minutes on Saturday since the 2-0 defeat at Palace on January 2nd.

Southampton team news vs Sheffield United

Sam McQueen remains on the long-term injury list having suffered a cruciate ligament injury before the season commenced.

William Smallbone is ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury. He likely won’t make a return to the pitch until October.

Oriol Romeu is also ruled out for the rest of the season due to a fractured ankle. The midfielder has had surgery and should be able to return for a full pre-season at the club.

Michael Obafemi has also needed to undergo surgery to solve an injury problem. He hasn’t featured in a matchday squad yet in 2021 and no timeframe has been given yet for his return.

Theo Walcott is the only other serious injury at the club. While a return date hasn’t been specified, it sounds like he may be out for quite some time.

“Theo, there is a tendon involved so it is quite long so we needed to do something in this position.”
– Ralph Hasenhüttl, Southampton Manager

Ibrahima Diallo has missed the last 6 matches with a hamstring injury. He is nearing a return to action though and could be involved from the bench here.

Kyle Walker-Peters may have returned to action too soon after his last hamstring injury for the Wolves match, having been out of the squad since with a recurrence of the problem. He is nearing a return but Hasenhüttl will be more cautious introducing him back into the squad this time.

Takumi Minamino is another Saints player suffering from a hamstring problem. Taki’s is only a slight problem though, causing him to miss Monday’s match against Everton only. He should be available for selection once again here.

Moussa Djenepo is expected to be rested here. He hasn’t started back-to-back games since his injury in January and Hasenhüttl is likely to continue to be cautious with the 22-year-old winger.
