The Blades welcome Fulham to Bramall Lane in Sheffield on Sunday for this Premier League match between the two teams propping up the rest of the table.

Both teams have had poor starts to the 2020/21 campaign so far, with 0 points from a possible 12 from their opening 4 games.

Sheffield United have suffered defeats to Wolves, Villa, Leeds and Arsenal. In a strange coincidence, Fulham have also lost to the same four teams this season, albeit in the opposite order to Sheffield United.

Sheffield United vs Fulham: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Sheffield United 1 – 0 Fulham is available at odds of 6/1.

Sheffield United’s last home victory over Fulham came in the Premier League back in January 2007 by a scoreline of 2-0. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 9/1.

Fulham’s last win at Bramall Lane was in the Championship back in November 2017. It was an insane match that saw the Cottagers come from behind to win 4-5. The odds for the same crazy scoreline here on Sunday are available on request.

Sheffield United vs Fulham has been a high scoring game recently, with the last three matches all seeing over 2.5 goals scored. You can back another high scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 6/5 for over 2.5 goals.

While 2020/21 has been hard on Fulham, Aleksandar Mitrovic has started the season on fire. He already has five goals for club and country. Mitrovic’s three goals for the Cottagers coming in the EFL Cup and two in the Premier League, both against Leeds. The Serbian international, who scored against Turkey on Wednesday, is the favourite at 9/2 to score the game’s opener on Sunday. Or 8/5 to bag a goal at any time during the game against the Blades.

Rhian Brewster, who signed for Sheffield United earlier this month in a club record deal, is the favourite of those to get on the scoresheet for the home side. The former Liverpool forward is available 5/1 to break the deadlock in this match. Or you can back Brewster at 7/4 to score at any time against Fulham.

Sheffield United vs Fulham: Match preview

In hindsight, the warning signs were there at the tail-end of last season that Sheffield United might struggle at the start of 2020/21.

They ended the 2019/20 campaign with a run of three consecutive defeats, which ultimately saw them tumble out of contention for European football, finishing the season in 9th place.

Chris Wilder was praised by fans and pundits alike for how well drilled and organised his Sheffield United side were. It was this that underpinned their climb up the Championship, promotion to the Premier League, and shock push for Champions League football last season.

A consequence of the suspension of football for over three months while the world tried to contain a pandemic, is that teams have been rushing ever since to catch up. This means a constant stream of games, almost no break between seasons and a reduced pre-season for the teams.

This means training sessions are now more about recovery and maintaining levels of the players. It is therefore no surprise that the most well-drilled and organised sides will suffer a big drop off in performance levels with less time on the training pitches to work on things tactically.

It may be that Sheffield United’s failure to qualify for Europe and early exit from the EFL Cup will benefit them in the coming months. While a lot of the Premier League will have their midweeks filled with additional matches, Wilder will be able to get his side back to the levels they were at last season on the training pitches.

In the short term though, he needs to make sure they don’t fall adrift from the rest of the pack. And that starts with picking up 3 points at home to Fulham at the weekend.

Sheffield United team news vs Fulham

Jack O’Connell’s season could be over after picking up a serious knee injury. With John Egan also self-isolating due to Covid-19, the Blades are looking short of bodies in central defence. Jack Robinson and Ethan Ampadu are expected to replace them.

Lys Mousset hasn’t featured yet for Sheffield United this season due to an injury to a ligament under his toe. He wasn’t expected to be out long with the injury but has subsequently required surgery.

Understudy goalkeeper, Simon Moore, is also ruled out with a broken finger. However, he is edging closer to a return for the Blades.

David McGoldrick is also ruled out with an adductor strain. The injury shouldn’t keep him out too long though.

Rhian Brewster (above) is tipped to make his Sheffield United debut on Sunday. Chris Wilder described Rhian as “one of the country’s hottest properties” after signing the striker from Liverpool in a club-record deal worth £23.5m. The 20-year-old will be included in the matchday squad, but will Wilder throw him into the starting lineup immediately?

John Fleck and Oliver Burke are both recovering from knocks and face a late fitness test to be available for selection here.

Fulham team news vs Sheffield United

The Whites were one of the busiest sides on deadline day.

Joachim Andersen, the highly rated 24-year-old central defender, joins on loan from Lyon. He has had a difficult time in France since moving to Lyon from Sampdoria for £22m a little over a year ago. He could go straight into Fulham’s backline to help shore up one of the Premier League’s leakiest defences.

Tosin Adarabioyo was signed from Manchester City for £1.5m. The 23-year-old central defender will provide competition for places at the back this season.

They also completed the signing of Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan from Chelsea. The 24-year-old is expected to start in central-midfield against Sheffield United.

Fulham could be without Kenny Tete still, due to a lower-leg injury. The injury caused him to miss their trip to Wolves as well as withdrawing from international duty with the Dutch squad.

Mario Lemina and Harrison Reed both missed Fulham’s last two league games as well as the EFL Cup defeat against Brentford. They were rated as touch and go to be available to face Wolves however it seems the match came too soon for the pair. Both are likely to have recovered over the international break to be available for the visit to Sheffield United.
