Norwich City vs Aston Villa: Match preview
Will Norwich City climb off the bottom of the table?
On Saturday night, despite putting in a spirited display, the Canaries were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Manchester United at Carrow Road.
The only goal came just 15 minutes from time when Max Aarons tugged down Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese superstar smashed in the subsequent spot-kick.
That’s now back-to-back defeats for Norwich having also gone down 3-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium the weekend prior.
Before this though, the Yellows were unbeaten in four, beating Brentford and Southampton before draws against Wolves and Newcastle.
Nevertheless, Dean Smith’s side still remain rooted to the foot of the table but are just three points from safety.
Smith, of course, was Aston Villa manager just six weeks ago and is a life-long fan of the club, so this’ll be an odd occasion for him.
Coming up after this one, Norwich face West Ham, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and then Leicester on New Years’ Day.
That certainly isn’t an easy run of fixtures but there are opportunities for them to add to their measly points tally.
Will Norwich claim just their third win of the season?
Will Aston Villa good form continue?
As for Aston Villa, the positivity under Steven Gerrard continues.
On Saturday, Gerrard returned to Anfield in an official capacity for the first time since leaving the club for LA Galaxy as a player in 2015.
His Villa team gave a very good account of themselves, despite Liverpool creating the vast majority of the afternoon’s chances.
Similarly to Norwich’s game later in the day, Aston Villa’s was decided by a soft penalty call given in favour of the bigger club.
Tyrone Mings was penalised for knocking over Mohamed Salah and the Egyptian smashed it past Emi Martínez.
Of course, this doesn’t amount to any points, but only losing 1-0 to an imperious Liverpool outfit does warrant some credit.
So, since Gerrard has arrived in the Midlands, he’s won three of five fixtures, beating Brighton, Crystal Palace and Leicester.
His only other defeat came against Manchester City, another game in which Villa competed with one of the world’s best teams.
All in all, the Villans are currently 12th in the table, four places higher than when Dean Smith left the club just last month.
Aston Villa have won their last three Premier League meetings with Norwich, including a thumping 5-1 victory on their last visit to Carrow Road.
That game, played in front of Villa fan Prince William and his family, is the only time since April 2008 they’ve scored 5+ in a top-flight away game.
Will Aston Villa’s improved form continue?
Norwich City team news vs Aston Villa
After a spirited display on Saturday night, Dean Smith isn’t likely to make too many changes.
Tim Krul has saved six of the 18 penalties he’s faced in a Norwich City shirt but could not keep out Ronaldo on Saturday.
In defence, Norwich are enduring a bit of an injury crisis just now.
Grant Hanley was spotted in a sling on Saturday after going off with a shoulder injury.
So, he, Ben Gibson and Andrew Omobamidele are all out, meaning midfielder Jacob Sørensen might fill in again alongside Ozan Kabak.
They are boosted at left-back though as Brandon Willams, who was ineligible to play against Manchester United, is in the reckoning again.
Thus, he’ll return in place of Dimitris Giannoulis.
In midfield, Billy Glimour continues to shine, breaking up play and distributing with ease.
Pierre Lees-Melou could return to the side; he’s one of two Norwich players one yellow card away from a ban.
The other is Mathias Normann who’s injured.
Out-wide, Josh Sargent continues to start games despite poor performances in, admittedly, not his usual positition.
But, the USA international could start once more with Przemysław Płacheta, who started a Premier League game for the first time on Saturday, on the other flank.
Temmu Pukki will continue to lead the line; he’s scored five Premier League goals this season which is 63% of all of Norwich’s league goals.
Will the Canaries climb out the relegation zone?
Aston Villa team news vs Norwich City
As for Aston Villa, their XI is also generally very settled since the change of management.
Emi Martínez has missed just one Premier League game since joining from Arsenal in summer 2020, keeping 19 clean sheets.
In defence, Matt Targett is back after suffering a concussion against Manchester City so will complete the usual back four.
Other members Tyrone Mings and Matty Cash are one booking away from a suspension.
As are midfield duo Marvelous Nakamba and John McGinn, who are once again likely to start alongside Douglas Luiz.
Jacob Ramsey too has been a favourite of Steven Gerrard but the more creative Emi Buendía could start against his former side.
Buendía and fellow summer signing Leon Bailey could be in support of Ollie Watkins.
Ramsey would therefore join Ashley Young, Anwar El Ghazi and Danny Ings on the bench.
Egyptian international Trézéguet was also a substitute at Anfield, his first matchday squad involvement for 245 days due to a knee injury.
Will Aston Villa be too strong for the Premier League’s bottom club?
