Match preview

Life just keeps on getting better and better for Newcastle United supporters.

On Tuesday night, the Magpies reached a first major cup final this century, seeing off Southampton in the Carabao Cup semis.

Having won 1-0 at St Mary’s a week earlier, Sean Longstaff’s quick-fire early brace ensured it was a night of celebration on Tyneside.

So, in 22 days time, Eddie Howe’s side will face Manchester United at Wembley, very much fancying their chances of lifting the League Cup for the very first time.

That’s because, in the Premier League, the Toon Army are above Man United, albeit only on goal difference, sat in third place, unbeaten in 15 games.

Three of Newcastle’s last four league fixtures have actually ended goalless, but they’ll still be confident of a victory here.

West Ham United meantime were also in cup action this week, reaching the FA Cup fifth round by beating Derby County on Monday.

Jarrow Bowen and Michail Antonio both on target at Pride Park.

Back in the Premier League, David Moyes’ men claimed a crucial victory in their most-recent outing, beating Everton at the London Stadium, with Bowen bagging both that day.

Having not won in seven beforehand, the Hammers are still 16th, a mere one point clear of the relegation zone.

The Irons have won just three of their 18 visits to St James’ Park this century, with a home win likely here too.

Newcastle United team news

Bruno Guimarães will serve the first of his three-match suspension here, after being sent off for a horror tackle on Tuesday.

Crucially, the next fixture the Brazilian is available for is the EFL Cup Final at the end of this month.

For now, Guimarães does leave a void in midfield, one that his compatriot Joelinton will attempt to fill.

With Joelinton moving inside, either Jacob Murphy or Allan Saint-Maximin would come in on the left-wing, the latter hasn’t started in the league since 28 August.

Callum Wilson has scored nine times against West Ham, more than against any other opponent in his career.

For now, Wilson will continue to lead the line, although club-record signing Alexander Isak is pushing him hard.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schär, Botman, Burn; S Longstaff, Willock, Joelinton; Almirón, Wilson, Saint-Maximin.

West Ham United team news

David Moyes will stick with the back three/five shape deployed in the 2-0 wins over Derby and Everton.

Łukasz Fabiański, Vladimír Coufal, Kurt Zouma, Lucas Paquetá and Declan Rice were all rested in the FA Cup, but are all likely to return here.

Winger Saïd Benrahma has been in excellent form of late, but Moyes may opt for the more industrious Pablo Fornals for this tough away game.

Conversely, Tomáš Souček has not been at his best this season, with Paquetá and Rice now the first-choice midfield pairing.

Up front, with new signing Danny Ings and Gianluca Scamacca injured, Michail Antonio will be seeking to score in a third successive appearance at St James’ Park.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Fabiański; Zouma, Aguerd, Ogbonna; Coufal, Rice, Paquetá, Emerson; Bowen, Fornals, Antonio.
