Newcastle United vs Tottenham betting tips: Preview, predictions & odds

Relegation beckons for Newcastle unless something changes quickly in the northeast of England. The Magpies sit just two points clear of the drop zone and a visit from a Tottenham side that has their sights trained on a potential climb to fourth in the table presents one of many difficult fixtures that could end up condemning to the unthinkable yet again.

Betting prediction: Newcastle United 0-2 Tottenham

Newcastle United are winless in their last six (0-3-3) and have managed just three goals in the process, and with Callum Wilson still absent from the matchday XI, the Magpies have it all to do against José Mourinho’s Tottenham who has won four of their last six in the league. Three points could see Spurs climb back into the top four after Chelsea’s shock loss to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, and it is fully expected that they will run-out winners here relatively comfortably.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham: Recommended bets

Correct Score: 2-0 Tottenham

They will create their chances, but whether or not they will tuck them away is the only question around a Spurs side who often do struggle to dominate bigger teams, but have the capability to hit smaller opposition hard. A complete rout is unlikely though considering Tottenham has only scored more than two goals in just seven of their 29 league fixtures this term. A comfortable 2-0 seems like a decent bet.

Winning Margin: Tottenham +2

There’s not much more to say apart from the above. Tottenham has the capability of comfortably seeing off Newcastle who have just two wins in their last twenty fixtured in all competitions. A full complement of attacking options available to Mourinho means a likely re-instated Kane-Son duopoly on the pitch which more often than not is incredibly decisive for Spurs.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham: Match preview

Unfortunately for Newcastle United, the old adage of “there is nowhere to go but up” is not applicable to their current state of affairs. Just two points clear of the relegation zone in 17th and only three points from their last possible 18 to their name, only Sheffield United have performed worse than the Magpies of late.

Things are dire in the northeast of England; very dire. And while many would like to think that the return of Callum Wilson that looms over the horizon could help alleviate the situation ever so slightly, the England international back in the matchday XI could potentially only offer limited improvement in certain phases of play. Overall, however, under Steve Bruce, Newcastle has been poor for the duration of the season even when their best attacking options are available.

If you cannot defend, then you better be able to score goals. Leeds United is the prime example of that fact this season, and the reality at St. James’ Park remains that the Magpies cannot do either with any regularity. Only three teams have a worse record at the back than Newcastle, and the only reason why Southampton is higher than them in the table is their slightly more consistent offensive output, and the fact that nine of the 51 goals they have conceded came in one abysmal afternoon.

The matter remains that Newcastle are – in their current rendition – no better than a midtable side when their squad is surveyed and compared to the rest of the Premier League, but they are still better on paper than what the table suggests. And such a statement can certainly be levied when it comes to their attacking options. But the combination of only one true goal threat this season and a severe lack of creativity from the center of the park (or full-backs to pick up the slack), if Newcastle were to be relegated, it would be a result entirely of their own making.

Champions League is vital for Tottenham as uncertain futures loom

With the growing uncertainty around the futures of both Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min given the interest in the attacking pair from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, Tottenham could find themselves in a tricky period during a time in the Premier League where hardly anything is guaranteed anymore. Kane, one of the premier center-forwards in Europe, along with a player in Son that has been overshadowed in name only but stood out in his own light, constitutes one of the best attacking duos in Europe this season and arguably the premier one in England.

But a potential future without the pair as early as next season could throw Spurs for a loop and the difficult task of trying to replace their most effective and consistent attacking players. Replacing Song may be easier in theory, with wide options around Europe being plentiful, especially if Tottenham acquires Champions League football next season. But filling the void left in Kane’s potential wake could prove almost impossible. Kane is not just about goals, but his overall game has him bested by only a very small handful of center-forwards on the continent and probably none in the Premier League at current.

Tomorrow’s matchup against Newcastle – and every fixture for the rest of the season – is key for Spurs, who it can be argued must ensure their participation in Europe’s premier club competition in order to attract a player of a level that would be deemed a suitable Kane replacement should the England man leave. But getting back into the Champions League could also be the avenue necessary to stave off both players’ departures as well. There is no telling when – and if – Tottenham will ever truly be capable of challenging for the league at any point even with the pair remaining at the club, but the Spurs project has not achieved enough headway on the domestic front to genuinely compete with Manchester City and a few other sides that are in the mix.

Three points against the Magpies would see Spurs climb into fourth and level on points with Chelsea while leapfrogging Liverpool and West Ham in the process. Fixtures against Everton and Manchester United then, and maximum points from those two clashes would theoretically put José Mourinho’s outfit in the driver’s seat of their own destiny both in the short – and hopefully – long term.

Newcastle United team news vs Tottenham

Steve Bruce remains without a handful of key assets when Newcastle host Tottenham on Sunday. Isaac Hayden will miss the remainder of the season while Fabian Schär is also unavailable.

Callum Wilson is close to a full return to the team but he is likely to miss out on Sunday, while Allan Saint-Maximin could play a part in proceedings but is not expected to start.

Martin Dubravka recovered from illness over the international break and should be ready to be reinstalled between the posts.

Tottenham team news vs Newcastle United

José Mourinho is certainly to be without both Matt Doherty and Ben Davies for their weekend holiday in the northeast but is able to welcome back Son Heung-Min to full fitness.

Erik Lamela is also available after completing his one-match suspension after being sent off against Arsenal but is unlikely to be selected ahead of Son or Lucas Moura.

Carlos Vinícius could be in-line to start after the Brazilian has scored three goals in his last two run-outs against Wolfsberger AC and Aston Villa.
