Newcastle United’s momentum from their win over Everton was crushed on Tuesday as they lost to Crystal Palace.

Steve Bruce’s side remain in a fight for survival sitting just eight points above the bottom three, having played a game more.

Southampton equalled their own Premier League record for the largest defeat as they were beaten 9-0 by Manchester United.

The Saints’ form has crashed since their win over Liverpool having lost all of their last four league games.

Just when Newcastle United started to show a glimmer of promise, they were brought crashing back down to earth with another defeat.

Steve Bruce’s side have now lost seven of their last nine matches in the Premier League leaving them in 16th.

The Tyneside club remain in the battle for survival with just eight points separating them from the drop zone.

Fulham also have a game in hand over them meaning getting a result on the weekend is crucial to avoid being seriously drawn into the battle.

Southampton suffer another 9-0 defeat

Southampton’s form has nosedived since their win over Liverpool and their issues were well and truly exposed by Manchester United on Tuesday.

The Red Devils inflicted another 9-0 defeat on Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side which saw them slip into the bottom half.

The Saints have now lost all of their last four games in the league and have failed to register a goal in six of their last eight matches.

Southampton have also had serious injury problems over recent weeks which has been a big factor in their recent poor form.

Newcastle United team news vs Southampton

Newcastle will be without captain and key defender Jamaal Lascelles who is out with a thigh injury.

The 27-year-old was taken off against Everton and was unable to feature against Palace.

His injury comes as a big blow for Steve Bruce as his side were just coming off the back of a clean sheet and win over the Toffees.

He has already lost Federico Fernandez to injury with the Argentine suffering also suffering a thigh injury.

Fabian Schar and Ciaran Clark is the painting Bruce opted to go with against Palace and he may be forced to do the same again against the Saints.

Only three other sides have conceded more goals this season than the Tyneside club and losing key defenders could cause further chaos.

Southampton’s injury nightmare continues on Saturday.

Hassenhuttl could be without eight players for the trip to Newcastle.

Southampton’s strong start to the season has been torn apart by injuries.

However, in better news, a number of key players are also set to return.

Jan Bednarek will be available after his red card against United was rescinded.

Oriol Romeu, Jannik Vestergaard and Kyle Walker-Peters could all be available for the game.

They will be without Alexandre Jankewitz who was shown an early red card at Old Trafford.

Mohamed Salisu, Stuart Armstrong, Nathan Tella, Theo Walcott, Ibrahima Diallo, Michael Obafemi and William Smallbone all remain sidelined.
