Manchester United have made a poor start to the season and need a victory to get things back on track. The Red Devils were thrashed 6-1 at home last time out and will be extremely low on confidence.

Man United have won each of their last five Premier League away games – conceding just two goals in that period. Their last away defeat in the league was at Anfield back in January.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have only won one of their last six league games at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have made a solid enough start to their campaign and are now unbeaten in their last four matches in all competitions.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United: Recommended bets

Both teams to score. Manchester United have conceded at least two goals in each of their last three Premier League games.

Mason Greenwood to score. With Anthony Martial suspended, Greenwood could lead United’s front line. Greenwood has just scored one goal this season, against Luton in the Carabao Cup, although he did score against Newcastle last season.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United: Match preview

Newcastle United host Manchester United at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Manchester United were hammered 6-1 by Spurs at Old Trafford prior to the international break. The Red Devils actually made a perfect start to the game. They won a penalty inside 30 seconds which was duly converted by Bruno Fernandes. After that, everything went pear-shaped.

Spurs were back in front within 7 minutes and were 4-1 up before half-time. Anthony Martial was controversially sent off before the half-hour mark, effectively sealing the result. Manchester United conceded two more goals in the second half in what ended up being one of their worst ever results.

United – who have played one less match than most other sides in the league – are on 3 points after 3 matches and start the weekend 16th. While it’s too early in the season to start drawing any conclusions, failure to win on Saturday would definitely add pressure onto Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s position as Man United boss.

Newcastle extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a solid 3-1 home win over Burnley last time out. Allan Saint-Maximin scored a brilliant goal and assisted another, while Callum Wilson bagged a brace. Newcastle are on 7 points after 4 matches – level with Spurs, Chelsea and Leeds.

The standout anomaly of Newcastle’s season was their 3-0 home defeat to Brighton in game week 2. If Newcastle produce a similar performance to the one they put on that day, they will be punished.

Newcastle and Manchester United have played each other 50 times in the Premier League. Manchester United have won 29, drawn 14 and lost only 7 of those matches.

Newcastle won last season’s corresponding fixture 1-0 just over a year ago. Matty Longstaff scored the only goal of the game.

Manchester United got their revenge later in the season with a 4-1 win at Old Trafford. Matty Longstaff found the back of the net again to open the scoring but United hit back with goals from Anthony Martial (2), Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.

Newcastle United team news vs Manchester United

Allan Saint-Maximin – arguably Newcastle’s best player this season – is expected to be fine for Saturday, despite a recent ankle knock.

Martin Dubravka remains sidelined having had leg surgery in September, so Karl Darlow will continue in goal.

Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett have returned to training following their respective hamstring injuries. Neither is expected to start but they are in contention for a spot on the subs bench.

Jamaal Lascelles also has a hamstring problem and is a slight doubt for the weekend. Fabian Schar partnered Federico Fernandez last time out and is an option if Lascelles is unavailable.

Summer signing Jamal Lewis missed Northern Ireland’s match against Norway due to an Achilles problem and will need to be assessed. If Lewis is unavailable, Javier Manquillo could deputise at left-back, which could see Emil Krafth start at right-back.

Jeff Hendrick appears to be ahead of Ryan Fraser, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron in Steve Bruce’s current midfield pecking order.

DeAndre Yedlin picked up a knock at the end of last month and remains a doubt. The American is yet to feature in the league this season.

Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle remain sidelined, while Matty Longstaff is a major doubt.

Manchester United team news vs Newcastle United

Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer may want to make wholesale changes to the side which capitulated against Tottenham, but the truth is that his options are limited – unless the likes of Odion Ighalo and Jesse Lingard are called upon.

Anthony Martial is suspended following his sending off against Spurs. Juan Mata could replace him in the starting eleven, while one of Marcus Rashford or Mason Greenwood will lead the line.

Eric Bailly and Harry Maguire both had terrible performances against Spurs, and one of them is likely to be replaced by Victor Lindelof.

Solskjaer has also reported that Maguire picked up a knock during England’s game against Denmark, and the defender will be assessed before Saturday’s kick-off.

Scott McTominay could come in for Nemanja Matic, while Donny van de Beek will also be pushing for a start. Fred is another option in midfield. Solsjkaer has demonstrated before that Paul Pogba is not irreplaceable in his starting line up.

Edinson Cavani is expected to miss out. The striker has been self-isolating as a precaution following his deadline day move to Manchester.

Axel Tuanzebe is nearing a return but remains unavailable, along with Sergio Romero and Phil Jones who are both injured.

Saturday’s match is likely to come too soon for Alex Telles, who has only just arrived from international duty.

None of United’s teenage deadline day signings will be involved.
