Betting prediction: Newcastle United 0 – 3 Manchester City

The Magpies welcome Manchester City to St James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne on Friday for this Premier League match.

The newly crowned 2020/21 Premier League Champions are chasing a first Premier League double over Newcastle since the 2017/18.

St James’ Park hasn’t always been a happy hunting ground for City, winning just 1 of their last 4 Premier League visits here. Although, they did win 0-2 here in the FA Cup last season.

The Geordies are undefeated in their last two home matches in this head-to-head in the Premier League. They also scored 2 past City on both occasions. Pep’s side are a much more defensively sound side than in previous seasons though.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Newcastle 0 – 3 Manchester City is available at odds of 15/2.

Newcastle’s last home victory over Manchester City came back in January 2019 by a scoreline of 2-1. A repeat of this score on Friday is available at odds of 33/1.

Manchester City’s last visit to St James’ Park resulted in a 0-2 win in the FA Cup last season. You can back them at 6/1 for the same scoreline here on Friday.

The last Premier League match between these sides here ended in a 2-2 draw. Odds of 22/1 are available if you see them sharing the points with the same scoreline once again.

Recent Newcastle vs Manchester City matches in the Premier League have been high scoring games with 5 of the last 6 matches producing over 2.5 goals. You can back another high scoring game here on Friday with odds of 4/7 for over 2.5 goals.

No player even comes close to the 15 goals Sergio Agüero has in matches between these sides. Dennis Tueart, who starred for City in the late 1970s and early ‘80s, is nearest with 10. Agüero is the odds on favourite at 8/13 to score against Newcastle United at the weekend. Or 3/1 to do so as the game’s first scorer.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City: What are the betting odds?

The Magpies’ 0-2 defeat here in their last home match was their first defeat at St James’ Park in 6 matches. They are also unbeaten in the last 2 visits of City. Despite this, they start the match as huge 12/1 underdogs.

City come into Friday’s match having won each of their last 11 Premier League away days. They are the massive odds-on favourites at 1/4 to win.

The last league match here in this head-to-head finished a 2-2 draw. Odds of 9/2 are available if you see Newcastle and Manchester City cancelling each other out on Friday.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City: Match preview

As we near the finish line on this 2020/21 Premier League, the only important questions remaining unanswered surrounds knowing which clubs will qualify for European competition. All questions regarding which competitions these two sides will be involved in for 2021/22 have been mathematically confirmed.

Manchester United’s defeat in midweek at Leicester saw their inner-city rivals City crowned Champions for the 3rd time in 4 seasons. With FFP being scrapped by UEFA, we could see a period of dominance for City here should they spend big to replacing ageing stars such as Aguero, Fernandinho and de Bruyne.

If they do so with the same ability that they replaced Vincent Kompany, it becomes difficult to see anybody stopping them from coming back even stronger next season. Ruben Dias has had a huge impact in his first season in English football and is one of the favourites along with Harry Kane for the Player of the Season award.

For Newcastle, their survival in the Premier League has been confirmed for another season. However, the fans are unhappy to say the least. Mike Ashley remains at the club as owner, which many supporters see as the main obstacle preventing the club from realising its potential.

There has also been a general air of discontent around Steve Bruce’s position as manager throughout the season. Many fans view him as a massive downgrade on Rafa Benitez and nothing that has happened the past 2 seasons will have convinced them otherwise.

For others, the quality of football, particularly in attack, has been a constant source of disappointment.

This game could represent a ‘free hit’ for Bruce. A Manchester City side perhaps taking it easy before more meaningful upcoming games. Possibly heavily rotated with those other matches in mind. Bruce has the chance to go out and attack a team they would ordinarily have to defend deep against in the hope of nicking a goal. The chance to show the fans that he can open up the throttle and get his team playing better football in the future now that the points don’t matter either way.

The reality is the identity of his team looks established and it would be difficult to see the approach of either side change much regardless of the personnel used here. For that reason, we expect City to control this match and win comfortably.

Newcastle United team news vs Manchester City

Fabian Schar misses Friday’s game due to suspension following his 90th minute red card against Arsenal. This will be the second match of his three-match ban, the final of which is versus Sheffield United next week.

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles is also out with a foot injury. While there was positive news in the past week about his progress, it still remains doubtful he will be involved again this season.

“He’s out of the boot and we’ve seen him walking about the training ground now. It’s touch and go whether he’ll play any further part this season.”
– Steve Bruce, Newcastle United Manager

Isaac Hayden, Karl Darlow and Ryan Fraser remain ruled out. Like Lascelles, it is becoming increasingly unlikely to see them involved again this season.

Callum Wilson now joins them on the injury list after injuring his hamstring during Friday’s win over Leicester. As the only player to have scored more than 5 goals for the Geordies this season, his loss could prove a big one for Newcastle.

Manchester City team news vs Newcastle United

Philippe Sandler is the only long-term injury concern for Manchester City coming into this match. The 24-year-old central defender had ankle surgery in the summer effectively ruling him out for the entire campaign.

John Stones will return to the side having missed the previous 2 league games due to suspension. Rúben Dias is expected to be rested with an FA Cup and Champions League final on the horizon.

Kevin De Bruyne has been involved in just 1 of City’s last 6 league matches. He is struggling with muscle fatigue and is expected to be rested with a view to getting him fit for City’s coming finals.

With this match being a dead rubber for City, any number of first team players could be rested here. This could see some of their youngsters such as Zack Steffen, Eric García, Adrián Bernabé, Claudio Gomes, Tommy Doyle, Cole Palmer, Felix Nmecha and Liam Delap included or possibly even starting this match.
