Betting prediction: Newcastle United 1 – 2 Brentford

Newcastle United welcomes Brentford to St James’ Park on Saturday for this Premier League match.

This will be the first match between them in top-flight football. However, they have faced each other 12 times in the history of English football with the Magpies having the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 8 wins to Brentford’s 4.

The most recent match between them was less than a year ago, in the EFL Cup, with Brentford eliminating Newcastle in the Quarter-Final stage of the competition. This ended a run of 6-straight wins in this head-to-head for Newcastle stretching back to 1955.

Newcastle United vs Brentford: Recommended bets

A 1-2 away win has become a recurring pattern in Brentford’s recent games with 4 of the last 6 matches all ending with a 1-2 scoreline; 2 in their favour and 2 against. 101 Great Goals’ prediction of Newcastle 1 – 2 Brentford is available at odds of 11/1.

3-1 Newcastle win. Newcastle’s last home victory over Brentford came back in the Championship in 2016 and finished with a scoreline of 3-1 to the Geordies. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 23/1.

1-1 draw. Newcastle have had plenty of draws in the last 2 months, all 4 of which have ended with the same 1-1 scoreline. Odds of 7/1 are available if you see the Magpies’ favourite result rearing its head again here.

0-1 Brentford win. Brentford won the last competitive match between these sides 0-1 less than a year ago in the EFL Cup Quarter-Finals. You can back them at 10/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Over 2.5 goals. That 0-1 victory in December 2020 broke a run of 6-straight over 2.5 goal games between the sides. Odds of 1.9/1 are available if you see them getting back to entertaining fans with a high-scoring game here on Saturday ending with over 2.5 goals.

Ivan Toney Goalscorer. Toney’s performances have certainly caught the eye this season for Brentford. However, he is in the middle of a scoring drought having failed to find the net in any of his last 6 Premier League games. Despite this, the 25-years-old is the 4.5/1 favourite to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 2.05/1 for Toney (pictured above) to bag a goal at any time during the game against Newcastle.

The Magpies are 2.62/1 to finally end their Premier League winless run after 11 games by taking all 3 points from Brentford on Saturday.

Whereas, the Bees are 2.7/1 to pick up a first away win at St James’ Park since 1934 when the sides faced each other competitively for the first time and Brentford were 2-5 winners.

There has never been a draw between these sides in 12 competitive matches. Odds of 3.25/1 are available if you see Newcastle and Brentford cancelling each other out for the first time here on Saturday.

Newcastle United vs Brentford: Match preview

All the talk in the build-up to this game has surrounded the appointment of Eddie Howe (pictured above) as Newcastle’s new permanent manager during the international break.

Once the season has started, it is really the perfect time to make such a change mid-season. The manager gets a mini-preseason with the players – at least those not on international duty. They can implement some ideas and work on any change in formation in terms of spacing and structure without constant games disrupting the work.

Out of the 25 players named in the senior squad this season, only Martin Dúbravka, Emil Krafth, Fabian Schär, Miguel Almirón, Jamal Lewis and Jeff Hendrick were unavailable to Howe over the last 2 weeks due to international duty. Not to mention the under-23 players such as Joe White who will be training with the senior squad.

The question, of course, is what Howe will have the players working on in those 2 weeks? The biggest change will likely be to their formation.

While Newcastle have predominantly been using a back-3 this season, including last time out against Brighton, Howe is expected to revert to a back-4 for Newcastle. Although, whether that is a change over time or an instantaneous one remains to be seen.

In Howe’s managerial career to date, he has used a back-4 in 467 matches – or around 95% of matches he has been in charge for which there is available data. The vast majority of those (71.5%) have seen him use some variant of a 4-4-2 formation.

Of those in which he uses a 4-4-2, two flat banks of four is the most commonly used in 200 games (or 55.5% of the time). Followed by a double-6 midfield with the wide players higher at 33.8% usage (122 matches). Lastly, a 4-4-1-1 with a #10 behind the #9 is used 10.8% of the time (or 39 matches).

A change from a back 3 to a back 4 can be complicated. Not only do your defenders have much more responsibility and lose the security blanket of an extra defender, but your passing angles and structure in building up play changes also. You also typically have fewer players through the spine of the pitch with 2 players on each flank rather than just 1 apiece when using wing-backs.

Whether Howe tries to introduce change gradually or rips off the back-3 system like an old band-aid will likely be a crucial decision for this match. Howe’s past record against Brentford is the definition of average, with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats in 6 matches.

Newcastle needs a win though, as one of only 3 clubs in the top 5 leagues alongside Furth and Levante to remain without a win so far this season.

Newcastle United team news vs Brentford

Eddie Howe has almost a clean bill of health for his squad ahead of his first game in charge of the Geordies.

Paul Dummett is the only major injury concern. The 30-years-old left-back has yet to feature for Newcastle this season due to a calf injury. However, he is back running and will hopefully be available for selection before the busy Christmas period. Matt Ritchie will continue at left-back in his absence.

Ryan Fraser is the only other slight injury concern. Fraser withdrew from the Scotland squad after feeling tightness in his calf during the warm down after the 1-1 draw with Brighton. However, he is expected to be available for selection here.

Brentford team news vs Newcastle United

In contrast, Thomas Frank has a long list of injuries to contend with here with up to 8 players unavailable for the trip to Newcastle.

David Raya is a huge loss. The goalkeeper sustained an injury to the PCL in his left knee. The injury is likely to rule him out until at least March 2022. Álvaro Fernández will take the gloves in his absence.

Joshua Dasilva remains ruled out with a rare hip injury. In pre-season, Frank suggested it wasn’t an injury that could be given a time frame and they would simply have to manage it the right way.

Mads Sorensen has been out since playing in their opening-day win over Arsenal with a medial ligament injury.

Kristoffer Ajer is also out with a hamstring injury. This could potentially keep him out of the hectic Christmas period of games returning in the New Year.

Mathias Jorgensen is also a doubt here with a muscular problem. This means Charlie Goode could make his first career start in the Premier League against Newcastle in a back-3 alongside Ethan Pinnock and Pontus Jansson. Goode replaced Zanka 12 minutes into the 2-1 defeat against Norwich before the international break.

Shandon Baptiste has missed the Bees last 4 league games with a dislocated shoulder. With Mathias Jensen also being a major doubt due to COVID, Frank Onyeka may come into midfield here alongside Christian Nörgaard.

Yoane Wissa has almost missed the last 4 league games after he twisted his ankle in training. He is nearest to returning to action though and should be available again sometime this month.
