Will Manchester United make it back-to-back wins?

On Thursday night, the Red Devils swatted aside Burnley at Old Trafford, racing into a 3-0 lead inside the first 35 minutes.

Scott McTominay opened the scoring with just eight minutes on the clock, before Jadon Sancho’s shot deflected in for a second.

Seven minutes later, McTominay this time had a long-range shot tipped on the bar, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to impudently tap home the rebound.

Burnley did pull one back just before half time but, following an uneventful second 45 minutes, the hosts cruised to victory.

This was a vastly improved performance from Monday night when Ralf Rangnick’s side drew 1-1 at Newcastle and were generally shambolic.

Nevertheless, they’re still unbeaten under the German Head Coach and sit sixth, four points outside the Champions League places with a game in hand.

However, Thursday’s victory was just the fourth time in 13 Premier League games they’d scored more than once, one of which they lost 4-2 at Leicester.

This highlights how, in general terms, they’re finding chances hard to come by.

2021 was the fourth consecutive calendar year in which Manchester United failed to win a major trophy.

Will that draught end in 2022?

In Premier League history, Man United have won 65.49% of matches played in January, the highest win % of any side in any month in the league’s history.

In contrast, Wolves have won just 17.24% of January Premier League matches, which is the club’s lowest win % in any specific month.

More pertinently, Man United have won their last three league meetings with Wolves, including a very lucky 1-0 victory at Molineux in August.

Wolves racked up an xG score of 2.01 but failed to convert, while Man United, with an xG of 0.66, were victories thanks to Mason Greenwood’s late strike.

Now, the Red Devils are looking for four successive league wins over Wolves for the first time since 1968.

Will they start the new year with a victory?

Will Wolves win away?

0-0. 1-0. 0-1. 0-1. 0-0. 0-0. 1-0.

No that isn’t some sort of hidden, coded message in binary code; it’s Wolves’ last seven results with their score always listed first.

In other words, none of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ last seven league games have featured more than a solitary goal.

Only two clubs have endured longer such runs in the Premier League: Crystal Palace (1994/95) on eight and Burnley (2015/16) who hold the record with nine.

In short, don’t expect goals at either end when Wolves are around.

Having said that, Bruno Lage’s side are quietly enjoying an impressive season.

This’ll be their first match for 15 days after their last two fixtures, against Watford and Arsenal, were both postponed at Wolves’ request.

The last time they did take to the field, Wolves held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Molineux.

Four days earlier, they’d beaten Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 at the Amex with Romain Saïss striking just before half time.

So, on one hand, Wolves have only won one of their last six.

But, if they are assessed more holistically, it’s only three defeats in 13 with two of those defeats coming against Man City and Liverpool, both 1-0.

So, at the start of 2022, Wolves are eighth, which leaves them in the ‘best of the rest other than West Ham’ positition.

Admittedly, that award title needs a bit of work.

However, Wolves have never won their first Premier League game of a calendar year, losing five of seven such matches.

In fact, the last time they won their first top-flight fixture of a new year was way back in 1981, beating Middlesbrough on 10 January that year.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are also winless in 14 visits to Old Trafford, dating back to 1980.

Will those statistics change here?

Ralf Rangnick, as has been well documented, prefers a 4-2-2-2 formation but question marks remain as to whether this suits his current squad.

David de Gea put in a vintage performance in the reverse fixture, making five saves and preventing and xG score of 1.1.

In defence, Victor Lindelöf is currently self-isolating and Eric Bailly hobbled off injured on Thursday.

The latter will be hoping to represent Côte d’Ivoire at AFCON with their first match coming up on 12 January against Equatorial Guinea.

So, with options limited, Raphaël Varane will come back into the starting XI despite his recent injury lay-off, alongside Harry Maguire.

At full-back, Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles had been the preferred pair since Rangnick’s arrival.

However, both Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw returned against Burnley and both surely did enough to keep their places for this one.

At the base of midfield, Fred could return, in place of Nemanja Matić, alongside Scott McTominay who was man of the match in their last game.

Further forward, Bruno Fernandes was suspended for that Burnley game due to yellow card accumulation.

Given that they performed better without him, this sparked a debate if Man United are better without him.

Despite this, Fernandes is likely to come straight back into the side with either Jadon Sancho or Mason Greenwood making way.

In attack, 34 year old Edinson Cavani could start alongside Cristiano Ronaldo once again.

Whenever they’ve been on the field as a pair, against Spurs, Newcastle and most recently Burnley, they’ve looked dangerous together.

So, this would see Marcus Rashford continue on the bench, along with perennial substitutes Donny van de Beek and Jesse Lingard.

Will Man United make it back-to-back home wins?

As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, given that they’ve been ravaged by Covid-19 in the last fortnight, predicting their XI is tricky.

Assuming he is available, José Sá will maintain his record of having started all 18 Premier League games this season, conceding just 14 times.

At centre-back, Yerson Mosquera and Willy Boly are both injured, so much so that Boly is expected to miss AFCON.

Without them, Bruno Lage will name the same trio of Romain Saïss, Conor Coady and Max Kilman.

Saïss will be heading to Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations after this one, to represent Morocco, and this will leave them short of defenders.

At left-wing-back, Jonny and Rayan Aït-Nouri are both in full training after sustaining injuries in April and on 4 December respectively.

Neither are likely to start this one though, meaning Marçal will keep his place once again.

Nélson Semedo is likely to return in place of Ki-Jana Hoever on the other side.

In the middle, as was the case against Chelsea, Leander Dendoncker could come in as a defensive option, alongside Rúben Neves and João Moutinho.

So, this’ll see them deploy a front two, most likely featuring Raúl Jiménez and Daniel Podence.

Francisco Trincão and Adama Traoré are the other attacking options; Pedro Neto, Hwang Hee-chan and Fábio Silva are all injured.

Will Wolves enjoy a famous victory?
