Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers match preview

Following back-to-back defeats on the road, can Manchester United prevent their season from completely unraveling?

Last Sunday night, the Red Devils were beaten 1-0 at the London Stadium by West Ham, with David de Gea’s failure to deal with a very tame shot gifting the Hammers the points.

Three days earlier, Man United suffered another 1-0 defeat on their travels, this time beaten by Brighton, conceding a penalty in the ninth minute of injury time at the Amex.

Overall, Erik ten Hag’s team have won just four of their last ten Premier League fixtures but do remain fourth, one point above Liverpool with a game in hand.

After this, they conclude their season with fixtures against Bournemouth (A), Chelsea (H), and Fulham (H), so should have more than enough to get over the line.

This week, Man United have had five days without a game, which is their longest period between matches (excluding the international break), since Christmas; no wonder they’re exhausted!

Back at home, will ten Hag’s side get back to winning ways?

Wolverhampton Wanderers meanwhile continue to be Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to home and away matches.

Last weekend, Toti’s towering header, his first goal for the club, was enough to see Wolves beat Midlands rivals Aston Villa at Molineux.

So, having won four consecutive top division home games for the first time since April 1975, Julen Lopetegui’s team are up to 13th, ten points clear of danger and mathematically safe.

Away from the Black County though, the Wanderers are without a win in six, losing four of them, smashed 6-0 by Brighton in their last road trip a fortnight ago.

Since Wolves’ return to the Premier League in 2018, they’ve met Manchester United a whopping 12 times, with the Red Devils claiming only five victories.

Last season, Wolverhampton Wanderers ended their 42-year wait for a win at Old Trafford, João Moutinho’s rocket the difference, but a repeat seems unlikely.

Manchester United team news

The headline team news is that Marcus Rashford is a major doubt, which would be a big blow, with Anthony Martial set to lead the line.

Luke Shaw will continue to partner Victor Lindelöf in defence, with Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez both sidelined.

David de Gea has made the joint-most errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season (4), but is reportedly close to signing a new contract.

Only Ryan Giggs, Sir Bobby Charlton, Paul Scholes, Bill Foulkes, Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney have made more appearances for the club than the Spanish goalkeeper.

Alejandro Garnacho was back on the bench against West Ham, hoping to feature for the first time since 12 March following an ankle injury.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelöf, Shaw, Dalot; Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes; Antony, Sancho, Martial.

Wolverhampton Wanderers team news

Toti’s winner last weekend could help see him keep his place at left-back, chosen over Rayan Aït-Nouri, with Jonny sidelined.

Diego Costa meanwhile will continue to lead the line; his only previous goal against Man United came for Chelsea in 2016.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): José Sá; Semedo, Dawson, Kilman, Toti; Lemina, Neves, Nunes, Neto; Diego Costa, Cunha.
