Manchester United vs West Brom: Premier League match preview

Premier League action resumes on Saturday following the international break. Manchester United host West Brom at Old Trafford.

Prior to the international break, United returned to winning ways with an impressive 3-1 away win at Everton. Bruno Fernandes scored twice while Edinson Cavani netted his first goal for the club. The result ended a run of three Premier League matches without a win.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side begin the weekend in 14th, although they do have a game in hand over most of the sides above them.

Manchester United’s record at home this season has been dire; Burnley are the only side in the division with a worse home record. The Red Devils have drawn one and lost three – including a 6-1 defeat to Spurs – of their four league games at Old Trafford. In those four matches, United have only managed to score 2 goals while conceding 10.

While Man United have struggled at Old Trafford, West Brom have been consistently poor both home and away.

West Brom have gone eight games without a win – losing five of those – while only managing one goal in their last five league matches. West Brom have picked up 1 point from four matches on the road.

Last time out, the Baggies came closing to taking a point against Tottenham Hotspur but conceded a late Harry Kane goal.

West Brom’s only victory this season in all competitions was a 3-0 Carabao Cup win at home to League Two’s Harrogate Town.

These two sides have faced each other 24 times in the Premier League. United have won 15 of those, drawing five and losing 4.

West Brom won 1-0 at Old Trafford in their last meeting in April 2018. In fact, United have only won four of their last 11 matches against West Brom.

Manchester United team news vs West Brom

Manchester United have a number of niggles and uncertainties following a hectic international break. Harry Maguire, Edinson Cavani, Donny van de Beek, and Daniel James all scored for their respective nations over the break. Scott McTominay scored his penalty kick in Scotland’s historic shootout win over Serbia.

Marcus Rashford has a shoulder problem and will need to be assessed prior to kick-off. Mason Greenwood is another concern following illness.

Anthony Martial is expected to be fit to play despite a recent lower back complaint. Mason Greenwood and Aaron Wan-BIssaka should be fresh to start after both being omitted from the England squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be sweating over the fitness of his first-choice centre-backs, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. Maguire scored for England over the international break but also picked up a foot injury that leaves him doubtful for Saturday.

Victor Lindelof is a doubt after coming off against France with a back injury, although he did report to training in Manchester on Thursday morning.

Edinson Cavani – who received a red card against Brazil – could miss out due to his late return from international duty in South America.

Alex Telles is likely to start at left-back after finally testing negative for Covid-19.

Eric Bailly, Luke Shaw, and Phil Jones all remain sidelined, with Jesse Lingard is a major doubt.

West Brom team news vs Manchester United

Sam Field is set to miss out with a knee injury but should return before the end of the year.

Branislav Ivanovic and Matheus Pereira have both been cleared to play after completing their isolation period and testing negative for Covid-19. The pair had previously tested positive before the game against Spurs.

Callum Robinson is also expected to be available. Robinson tested positive for Covid-19 while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland and has since completed his 10-day isolation period.

Slaven Bilic revealed in his pre-match press conference that there were “a few” other positive Covid results in the squad but did not give further details.

Hal Robson-Kanu remains sidelined following elbow surgery.

Baggies goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is a product of Manchester United’s academy, although he failed to make a first-team appearance at the Red Devils.
