Betting prediction: Manchester United 3-0 Newcastle

Without Callum Wilson fit and available, Newcastle could be in for a very tough time whenever they manage to get spells of possession, despite the talents of Miguel Almirón and Allan Saint-Maximin. As for Manchester United, their 4-0 thrashing of Real Sociedad is a testament to what they’re capable of when they’re on song, and if they bring a similar performance level against the Magpies, a similar score could be the end result.

Manchester United vs Newcastle: Recommended bets

Player to Score First: Bruno Fernandes

A pretty safe bet at the minute, Bruno Fernandes is in the midst of a brilliant goal-scoring season. All-told, the Portuguese international has twenty-one goals in thirty-six appearances across all competitions and is second on the Premier League goal chart. With United’s forwards not producing the numbers they should, Fernandes could yet again get them on track at the weekend.

Winning Margin: Manchester United +3

Newcastle has struggled this season against the traditional big six Premier League clubs, picking up just two points thus in the process. Without Callum Wilson available, tucking away any chances they may craft becomes that much more difficult against a United side on the back of an exceptional away day. United could walk this, but nothing in football is a guarantee.

Manchester United vs Newcastle: Match preview

Despite their impressive result in midweek, Manchester United has a much harder task to perform in the Premier League as they try to hunt down Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who remain in otherworldy form. At current, the Red Devils are failing in that task, however, as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men – though only losing one in their last six in the league – have registered only two wins in the same timeframe.

The draws against Arsenal, Everton, and West Bromwich Albion have seen United fall away from City, and instead sit level on points with Leicester City, and only four points clear of Chelsea and West Ham United while Liverpool is in touching distance six points adrift. The date with Newcastle at Old Trafford represents the perfect opportunity for United to get back to winning ways in the league off the back of a performance that should boost their confidence immeasurably.

Getting their forward line to contribute in a more consistent manner should be one of the main focus’ for Solskjær as well, considering their hit-and-miss form in the final third. Fernandes’ goals have been important and indeed vital, but to expect him to continue that level of output would be folly. Should United go with their strongest possible XI – even if Edinson Cavani is unavailable – more is needed from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood for the remainder of the season if United are to avoid puttering out of contention.

Callum Wilson absence may be unrecoverable for Newcastle

The news that leading striker Callum Wilson will miss the next two months due to a hamstring injury was the last thing Newcastle supporters will have wanted to hear this season. The clubs leading goal-scorers ten goals this season placed him amongst the top ten in the league, while his 40% goal contribution rate was the highest of that group.

Only two other Magpies players have move than one league goal this season for Steve Bruce; Miguel Almirón and Jeff Hendrick. There really is an official goal crisis at St. James’ Park now, at a time when Newcastle are trying their best to keep their head above water above the bottom three that, as it stands, they only sit six-points ahead of.

What Wilson offered to Newcastle – and Bournemouth before them – was a player who could find goals no matter what system he was being deployed in. The unfortunate reality for Bruce is that his other forwards in Joelinton, Andy Carroll, and Dwight Gayle, all three options require a specific approach to get the best out of them. Wilson was able to play in a more direct, counter-attacking approach, while also able to play a more expansive game and contribute in multiple phases of play.

For a club of their size in a domestic scope, Newcastle is a footballing entity desperate to become relevant on the ever-changing Premier League landscape. Examples of how Aston Villa have rebounded after nearly being relegated last term serve as a banner of hope, but without Callum Wilson for much of the remainder of the season, they truly do run the risk of failing to avoid the drop yet again.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is set to remain without both Paul Pogba and Phil Jones for Newcastle’s visit.

Questions remain around the availability of Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay, and Donny van de Beek.

Newcastle team news vs Manchester United

Callum Wilson is added to the list of unavailable players for Steve Bruce, constituting a massive blow to the Magpies’ ability to find goals.

Federico Fernández (who is back in training), Javier Manquillo, and Fabian Schär are all out, while Paul Dummett remains a doubt.
