Betting prediction: Manchester United 1 – 2 Everton

Manchester United welcomes Everton to Old Trafford on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Red Devils have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 37 wins to Everton’s 9, from their 58 encounters in the Premier League. At Old Trafford, the record is even more dominant with 20 wins and 2 losses in 29 matches.

United haven’t lost at home to Everton since 2013. Interestingly, that was the first time David Moyes faced Everton as an opposition manager after making the switch from Goodison Park to Old Trafford to replace the retiring Alex Ferguson.

However, the Red Devils’ recent record in this head-to-head hasn’t been great, with just 1 win from the last 5 Premier League matches. Everton actually leads 10-8 on aggregate across those 5 games.

Manchester United vs Everton: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Manchester United 1 – 2 Everton is available at odds of 21/1.

2-1 Manchester United win. Manchester United’s last home victory over Everton came back in 2018 by a scoreline of 2-1. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 9/1.

3-3 draw. The last match in this head-to-head finished as a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford back in February this year. Odds of 67/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

0-1 Everton win. As mentioned previously, Everton’s last win at Old Trafford was back in 2013 by a 0-1 scoreline. You can back them at 17/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Over 2.5 goals. When these sides met earlier this year in Manchester, they produced a 6-goal thriller to entertain the neutrals. This followed a trend of Manchester United vs Everton games at Old Trafford being high scoring affairs, with 3 of the last 4 being over 2.5 goal games. You can back another high scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 1.8/1 for over 2.5 goals.

Bruno Fernandes Goalscorer. Everton has been one of Bruno’s favourite opponents since joining the club, scoring in all 3 Premier League appearances against them. The attacking midfielder has 4 goals and an assist in 3 league games against the Blues. The Portuguese international is 7/1 to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 2.87/1 to put his nightmare penalty last weekend behind him and bag a goal at any time during the game against Everton.

Manchester United vs Everton: Match preview

Winning when playing badly is the sign of champions – A line we hear from pundits a lot and it certainly has a lot of truth to it.

Teams cannot be perfect every game. There will be times when legs are tired, an opponent finds a weakness, or the side are just otherwise not at 100%. In those situations, the ability to dig out the result you need is vital to success. In Europe that can mean staying in a tie in the first leg and not letting it get away from you. Making sure there is still something to play for in the second leg.

In the league, it can mean staying in the game until the final moments so that an injury-time equaliser or winner can erase a poor 89 minutes prior. During the Alex Ferguson era, it was famously nicknamed ‘Fergie-time’ when his side would invariably rescue a result from a rare poor performance with a winner in the 5th minute of injury time.

We saw that on Wednesday night as Cristiano Ronaldo snatched a 94th-minute winner against Villarreal, after David de Gea had kept United in the game with a string of huge saves. Villarreal had created 4 big chances in the match to United’s 1, but ultimately it counted for nothing as they failed to convert whereas the hosts did.

It is a recurring theme this season too, with a poor first half being rescued in the second half, such as in the Southampton and Wolves games. There has also been a result-changing goal after the 88th minute in 4 of the last 5 United matches, not to mention Bruno’s infamous missed penalty last weekend which would have rescued a point for the Red Devils.

However, this also raises two points of concern. Firstly, 2 of those 4 goals have been against United, ultimately costing them the game. Secondly, unlike Fergie’s United, this is becoming a recurring theme, the default rather than the failsafe when everything else has failed.

Consistently strong performances, over a period of time, will produce positive results. The same is true of poor performances, though.

Facing an Everton side struggling with injuries could be the perfect chance to start heading down the right path. However, it also represents a dangerous fixture against a very clever coach in Rafael Benitez. Rafa was winless in his first 8 Premier League matches against United as Liverpool boss. However, he won 3 of 4 matches against them in his final few years at Liverpool, and 2 out of 3 as Chelsea boss.

He also managed to win with a newly promoted Newcastle back in 2018. However, that was his only victory in 4 matches as boss of the Magpies against the Red Devils. Rafa has overseen a fantastic start to the season at Goodison Park, with Everton just 1 point behind league-leaders Liverpool.

Injuries at both ends of the pitch to Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin and Pickford threatens to halt them in their tracks, but you feel with players like Gray and Rondon, Benitez could still play containment and counter football and catch a tired United side out after a tough game on Wednesday and an early kick-off on Saturday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United team news vs Everton

Marcus Rashford is ruled out after having surgery after the conclusion of England’s Euro 2020 campaign. He is expected to visit a specialist over the weekend to receive the all-clear to return to full contact training. However, it could still take some time for him to build up fitness and then match sharpness to have an impact on games once again.

Amad Traore is still out with a thigh injury. Similar to Rashford, he is expected to return to training over the international break and could be involved again sometime in October.

Harry Maguire withdrew against Aston Villa with 25 minutes remaining with a calf injury. Thankfully, the international break arrives at a good time and this may be the only league match he misses out on for United. Lindelof and Varane will continue in central defence in his absence.

Luke Shaw only managed 35 minutes against Villa. However, unlike Maguire, his problem is only a minor one and he could be involved with the squad here pending a late fitness test. Regardless, after Alex Telles’ wondergoal in midweek, there is no need to rush him back.

Dean Henderson returned to the bench in midweek and has seemingly put the after affects of COVID-19 behind him. However, considering David de Gea’s form, it could be a while before he gets another chance between the sticks.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is suspended for 2 Champions League matches and therefore wasn’t involved against Villarreal. He is expected to return here in place of Dalot.

Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani were both rested in midweek as Solskjaer looks to protect old legs. However, both could start here as he looks to rotate his options.

Everton team news vs Manchester United

Cenk Tosun is the only Everton player on the long-term injury list with a patella injury.

They are also without Gylfi Sigurdsson too, of course, following his arrest over child-sex offences. The club confirmed the midfielder had been suspended from all first-team duties and he hasn’t been registered in Everton’s Premier League squad for this season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury is the big blow for Everton at the moment. The striker fractured a toe and suffered a quad injury in training. He is expected back sometime after the coming round of internationals.

Fabian Delph is ruled out with a shoulder injury that could keep him out until November.

Richarlison and Seamus Coleman also won’t be available here due to knee and thigh injuries respectively.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Andre Gomes are both ruled out with minor calf injuries. They should be available once again for the club’s next match.

Jordan Pickford is touch and go with a shoulder injury. He faces a late fitness test with Asmir Begovic ready to step in just as he did for the 3-0 defeat at Villa.
