Manchester United vs Crystal Palace: Match details
Match: Manchester United vs Crystal Palace
Competition: Premier League
Date: December 5, 2021
Kick-off time: 2:00 pm, December 5, 2021 (UK time)
Stadium: Old Trafford
Betting prediction: Manchester United 3 – 1 Crystal Palace
Manchester United welcomes Crystal Palace to Old Trafford on Sunday for this Premier League match.
The Red Devils have the strong upper hand in the head-to-head, with 17 wins to Crystal Palace’s 2, from their 24 encounters in the Premier League. Although, the fact that the clash is at Old Trafford could be a help for Palace, as their only 2 Premier League wins in this head-to-head have come at this stadium in their last 2 visits.
United’s dominance in this head-to-head extends into all competitions, too, where they have 38 wins to 9 in all competitive matches since the clubs first faced each other in the old Division Two back in 1922. However, they have won just 1 of the last 4 matches, and none of the last 3 at Old Trafford.

Manchester United vs Crystal Palace: Match preview
The Ralf Rangnick era at Manchester United officially begins on Sunday after his work visa was finally approved.
Accompanying the news of his official arrival was word that Michael Carrick will now leave the club with immediate effect. The news came as something of a shock as Carrick was expected to resume his role as Assistant Manager once his temporary job as interim boss had been completed. However, Carrick revealed in a statement that he wished to take time away to spend with his family, and this felt like the right time to do so.
In truth, changing the entire approach and identity of a team will take time. A high-intensity pressing game takes 12 to 18 months to fully implement and see elite results. As the saying goes, things sometimes need to get worse before they get better.
The first step is often just getting the players to buy into the idea of needing to run a lot more. Initially, that running can be a little aimless and even counterproductive as players are yet to nail down the pressing triggers and know when marks a good and bad time to press.
So, while a new manager bounce is often expected when such appointments are made, it may be that it takes a few months before United see the fruits of their labour. In fact, given that Rangnick is expected to be a short-term appointment before moving into more of a consultancy role, it may be that the German will simply put the foundations in place for the next man up to start building something new.
An early indicator that the players will be willing to work harder came in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo’s pressing numbers from the match against Arsenal, provided by Opta. It is equally interesting to note that he didn’t have any successful defensive actions or pressures in the game.
As mentioned before, though, if the first step is simply getting the players to buy into the plan to run more, then the signs are already looking good for Ralf. Pressing effectively, knowing when to conserve energy, when your shape is wrong for pressing and how and where to create pressing traps for opponents will all come with time.
Speaking of time, things seem to be getting worse for Patrick Vieira as time passes. Crystal Palace are currently on a run of 3 games without a win, having lost each of their last 2. Of greatest concern will be the fact that those results came against potential opponents in a future relegation battle, should form continue to slide. All 3 teams were in the bottom-5 at the time that the matches were played.
Manchester United team news vs Crystal Palace
The big focus will be on Cristiano Ronaldo here. He was unable to complete the game in midweek, although his substitution seemed to be more owing to cramp than injury. Still, with such a short turnaround between matches, it is possible that he is used as an impact sub here, rather than from the start.
Paul Pogba is still out due to a quadriceps strain suffered with the France national team during the break. This is expected to rule him out until late January.
Tahith Chong is also on the long-term injury list following groin surgery. He isn’t expected to return to the pitch until at least March 2022.
Edinson Cavani has been suffering with an irritated tendon since pre-season. He is nearing a return to action and could even make the bench here pending a fitness test.
Raphael Varane remains ruled out with a hamstring injury after being forced off in the first half of the match against Atalanta. He is back in light training but it will still be several weeks before he is match-ready.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (above) missed the Arsenal match due to a hand injury after Callum Hudson-Odoi stood on his hand during the clash against Chelsea. It is possible he will feature here with some protection for his hand and wrist. Diogo Dalot will be ready to deputise in his place if required.
After two head injuries in close proximity for Luke Shaw, the club are being cautious in avoiding repeated head trauma and will give him plenty of time to fully rest and cover. Alex Telles likely will continue at left-back as he did the past 2 games.
Nemanja Matic missed the Arsenal match with a hamstring injury and will likely be out for this one also.
Crystal Palace team news vs Manchester United
Nathan Ferguson is still ruled out with the Achilles tendon injury sustained at the tail-end of the previous campaign. He started training with the first team again last month, but no return date is being provided yet.
Joel Ward will also miss this match due to suspension having accumulated 5 yellow cards. Either Nathaniel Clyne or Martin Kelly will likely get their first Premier League minutes of the season here, deputising for the defender.
James McArthur has missed the last 3 games with a hamstring strain. Luka Milivojevic is likely to start in midfield in his absence here. Although, after getting his first league minutes for Palace in midweek, Will Hughes will be hoping to earn a first start.
Joachim Andersen has missed the last 2 league matches with a thigh injury. He faces a late fitness test to be involved here. James Tomkins will be ready to continue at centre back if required.
