Manchester United vs Burnley betting tips: Preview, predictions & odds

Off the back of reaching their second semi-final push in the Europa League in as many seasons, Manchester United clash with Burnley at Old Trafford with a chance to close the gap to once-runaway leaders Manchester City. Burnley have a different story to tell, and their survival in the English top flight comes down to the last weeks of the season, but as they sit 7-points clear of 18th-placed Fulham, another result at United would see Burnley 10-points clear and all but assured safety for another season.

Manchester United vs Burnley: Match details

Match: Manchester United vs Burnley

Competition: Premier League

Date: April 18, 2021

Kick-off time: 4:00 pm, April 18, 2021 (UK time)

Stadium: Old Trafford

Betting prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Burnley

Manchester United will be on a high after securing a semi-final date in the Europa League knockout stage against Serie A outfit AS Roma and come into the weekend Premier League program with the chance of going 10-points clear of Leicester City while closing the gap to Manchester City to just 8-points.

Most would their money on a very comfortable home win against a Burnley outfit that is eyeing Premier League safety, but the Clarets under Sean Dyche should be able to make life difficult for Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men. Still, the Red Devils should pull out a win at Old Trafford despite Burnley’s recent record (1-1-0; 4GF 2GA) on away days at United.

Manchester United vs Burnley: Recommended bets

Winning Margin: Manchester United +2

The last two fixtures that took place at Old Trafford between this pair did not go United’s way, both in the way of results and trying to keep Burnley quiet on the scoresheet, but the Red Devils are on a high of late, winning six of their last seven and earning four clean sheets along the way. Though Burnley has only one win in their last six, only one side – Tottenham – have kept them off the scoresheet and are also the only club to have a margin of two or better against them in that same timeframe. It is a tough task, but United could pull it off.

To Score First: Edinson Cavani

With goals in his last two outings for United, Edinson Cavani is slowly but surely proving his worth as an option for the Red Devils in the medium term where many thought he would only be valuable for one season. Highly experienced, and with an impressive goal record across his entire career for club and country, the former Uruguayan international still has plenty to offer, especially when surrounded by mobile attacking players like Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Bruno Fernandes. Against a stubborn Burnley backline, Cavani’s multifaceted ability to find goals could be the tonic to find the crack in the Clarets armour.

Manchester United vs Burnley: Match preview

As Manchester United close in on just their second top-two finish in the Premier League in the last eight seasons, the record English champions have come a long way from the beginning of a new life under Ole Gunnar Solskjær; one that was turbulent to say the least. But unlike clubs like Chelsea, under the ruthless grip of Roman Abramovich, United aim to not press the panic button too early if things are difficult, sometimes to their detriment. But with Solskjær, there came a point where many felt he simply could not handle the size and scope of the task at hand, regardless of the fact that he once banged important goals in front of the Old Trafford faithful.

With seven years of management experience with both Molde and Cardiff City, and then an additional three within the Manchester United academy set up, OSG is hardly a novice, but still nowhere near the level of some of the names many would have welcomed to the northwest. José Mourinho was one of them, while many would have wanted the likes of Carlo Ancelotti or Massimiliano Allegri. The early times under the former United striker seemed to prove his detractors correct, but fast-forward to the present, and United are in their second Europa League semi-final in as many seasons and have finished 3rd and now – likely – 2nd in the league during the two-full seasons where Solskjær was in command.

And while their ownership may so often be maligned for one reason or another, it could be time for many to come to terms with the fact that the Glazer family, via shot-caller Chief Executive Ed Woodward, have done well to stand by Solskjær. On the cusp of two top-three finishes in two full seasons after taking over in December 2018, and two confirmed deep-runs in European campaigns, it is hard to argue against the job he has done. The only thing remaining would be to win the league, and while that is no easy task in the age of Manchester City, if United’s trends over the past two years are any indication, next season could be a year where they seriously challenge for the league.

The clash with Burnley on Sunday represents a chance to push United just 8-points behind City and in the midst of a five-match winning run, while sitting clear of Leicester City by 10-points. While winning the league this season would take a miracle, reminding City that their biggest domestic rivals could be their greatest challengers next season would be a huge boon as the club head into the summer.

Burnley’s brightest with a Devils past is key to their future

It was not all that long ago when Dwight McNeil was going through his paces in Carrington in the hopes that one day he would star for the biggest club in England. But unlike Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford, McNeil would not be granted that chance and left United when he was fourteen. The Rochdale native found his way into Burnley’s pipeline, and four years after he broke ties with Manchester United, he made his full debut for the Clarets as an 18-year old. Fast-forward to the present, and the 21-year-old is an England U21 international, while being coveted by clubs that far outstrip Burnley.

If you ask the man himself, he would tell you that his failure to make the grade at United was precisely the motivation he needed to ensure that he would fashion a career for himself in the game that he lived and breathed. Such has been his rise to prominence in the Burnley camp that now only is he largely regarded as one of the best – if not the best – technical players to ever come through their academy, but the Clarets struggle on a tactical level when he is not in their matchday XI. One of the few players that is capable of elevating their brand of football, McNeil holds the key to Burnley’s future in the Premier League in more ways than one.

While he is at the club, they have a much greater chance of remaining in the English top flight, but the time will likely soon come where he leaves the club that gave him his real chance, for bigger and better where he has the chance to push his career to the next level. One such club is the very same United that discarded him seven years ago, but his departure may not spell doom for Burnley’s hopes and dreams.

The nature of the transfer market in England is such that, if – and when – McNeil leaves Turf Moor for bigger, greener pastures, Burnley should receive a very tidy sum from the buying club. In that light, it is possible that McNeil could help the club sustain its survival more effectively than he ever could on the pitch. And that is no bad thing. But while he is still under Dyche, and even if he does not feature this weekend against his former club, McNeil’s importance to the side is unquestionable. If he’s available, they truly are the best version of themselves.

Manchester United team news vs Burnley

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is set to welcome back the majority of his first-team squad to the selection pool after another successful midweek in Europe.

Anthony Martial and Phil Jones are still unavailable for selection, and there are questions if Eric Bailly or Marcus Rashford will be fit enough to make the bench, though Rashford has a good to not only make the bench but start after not featuring in midweek.

Scott McTominay, Luke Shaw, and Harry Maguire are all back to take their place in the matchday XI after being unavailable midweek through card accumulation.

Burnley team news vs Manchester United

There are at least three concerns for Sean Dyche when Burnley travels to Manchester United on Sunday; Ashley Barnes, Robbie Brady, and Kevin Long are all sure to miss proceedings at Old Trafford.

In another big blow, Dyche has listed influential winger Dwight McNeil as a doubt, and should he miss out on selection, Burnley would lose one of their best avenues to create chances.

Questions around Nick Pope also remain due to a recent shoulder injury. If unavailable, backup keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell would keep his place.
