Manchester United’s Jekyll and Hyde start to the season continues.

In the Premier League, the Red Devils’ form has been near-perfect, but in cup competitions they’re 0 for 2

On Wednesday night, Man United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup, as West Ham United won 1-0 at Old Trafford.

That’s just the fourth time they’ve exited the League Cup in the third round or earlier since 2001.

Eight days before, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side began their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Young Boys at Stadion Wankdorf.

But, in the league, they’re currently third, behind Chelsea and Liverpool on goal difference, with 13 points from a possible 15.

Last weekend for example, Cristiano Ronaldo equalised before Jesse Lingard bagged a late winner in a comeback 2-1 victory at the London Stadium.

David de Gea was the hero, though, saving a 96th-minute penalty from Mark Noble, who’d been specifically sent on to take the kick.

So, as mentioned, they have 13 points having also beaten Leeds, Wolves and Newcastle, only slipping up in a 1-1 draw at Southampton.

But the pressure is very much on Solskjær this season to deliver his first silverware as a manager, heightened by his side’s League Cup exit.

Over the next week, the Red Devils face three crucial home fixtures.

After Saturday, Villarreal visit, in a repeat of May’s Europa League Final, with Everton making the 32-mile journey east next Saturday lunchtime.

Will Manchester United start this crucial week with a win?

Will Aston Villa cause an upset?

As for Aston Villa, they too exited the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night but it wasn’t for want of trying.

The Villans fell behind at Stamford Bridge to Chelsea just after half time, only to equalise ten minutes later.

19 year old Cameron Archer, who’d announced himself with a hat-trick in the last round at Barrow, smashed a volley in off the crossbar.

The tie went to a penalty shootout and Anwar El Ghazi got Villa off to a good start only for Ashley Young to hit the cross-bar and Marvelous Nakamba to see his effort saved.

The thousands of Villa fans in attendance, including their most famous supporter Prince William, seemingly lost hope at this point.

Former Villan Ross Barkley duly put Chelsea further ahead only for a conversion from Erzi Konsa and a miss by Ben Chilwell to restore hope.

Emi Buendía kept the tie alive but it was merely delaying the inevitable, as Reece James sent the European Champions through.

Still, much to take from a spirited performance against the league-leaders.

In the Premier League, it’s been hard to pin-down if Dean Smith’s side are any good or not.

Last weekend, they hammered Everton 3-0 at home thanks to a flurry of second half strikes, Matty Cash and Leon Bailey both with thunderbolts.

So, they have seven points, having also beaten Newcastle, as well as losing both away fixtures at Watford and Chelsea.

The general bemusement regarding Aston Villa’s true level is probably reflected by the fact that they’re currently slap-bang in the middle of the table in tenth.

This suggests they are neither great nor bad.

Villa are currently winless in their last 18 meetings with Man United across all competitions.

Their last victory, at Old Trafford in December 2009, is actually their only one in this fixture since 1999 (43 games).

Will this barren run come to an end?

Ole Gunnar Solskjær used a lot of his squad players on Wednesday but, just over 62 hours later, is likely to go back to the more tried-and-tested.

David de Gea will return in goal with Dean Henderson back on the bench.

The Spaniard’s penalty save last weekend was his first since the FA Cup semi-finals of 2016, failing to keep out 37 since.

In defence, it’ll be all change with Diogo Dalot, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelöf and Alex Telles making way for the usual quartet.

Scott McTominay and Fred are likely to be the double-pivot in front of the returning back four with Nemanja Matić dropping out.

This would see Paul Pogba continue on the left with Mason Greenwood getting the nod on the other flank.

The 19 year old will start ahead of other midfield/winger options Juan Mata, Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Jesse Lingard.

The latter could score in three consecutive league matches for Man United for the first time.

But, just as he did against Newcastle and West Ham, Lingard will have to contribute as a substitute.

Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, is looking to continue his record of having scored in all three appearances against Aston Villa.

All three of those goals have been penalties but, even if Man United are awarded a first spot-kick of the season, he’s unlikely to take it.

That’s, of course, due to the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo who’s netted four times in just three appearances since returning.

Can he maintain that record?

Manchester United have won 37 Premier League matches against Aston Villa; no team has won more games against a single opponent.

Will this side make that 38 at Old Trafford?

The visitors too made numerous changes on Wednesday, so this XI will look a lot more like that from last weekend too.

This includes Emi Martínez returning in goal in place of Jed Steer who, for one reason or another, has played in both trips to Stamford Bridge this month.

Matty Cash will continue at right-back.

He’s expected to make his international debut for Poland next month, for whom he qualifies through his maternal grandparents.

Dean Smith has deployed a back three for Villa’s last two league games but could switch back to a more familiar four here.

In midfield, Douglas Luiz and John McGinn are the usual duo, the latter could be back in contention after suffering a concussion a week ago.

20 year old Jacob Ramsey could join them in midfield with Morgan Sanson and Marvelous Nakamba, who started in the League Cup, missing out.

In attacking areas, Smith has plenty of options but Leon Bailey has been ruled out.

Emi Buendía could be in the side so either Bertrand Traoré or Anwar El Ghazi would be left in reserve.

The change to a back three has allowed Villa to utilise a front two but, in this tough away game, Danny Ings may be deployed as a lone front man.

So, Ollie Watkins, who’d started the last two league games, and mid-week scorer Cameron Archer, would be on the bench.

Can Aston Villa end their winless streak against Manchester United?
