Manchester City vs Southampton betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Manchester City vs Southampton prediction: Manchester City 5-0 Southampton

A home banker?

Somehow, despite achieving 100 points last season, Manchester City look even better this time around.

Southampton meanwhile are slow, sluggish and struggling so surely they have no chance of leaving Manchester with anything, right?

Can they shock the champions?

Similarly, a draw is 15/2.

Manchester City to win and over 2.5 goals is only 1/3.

Manchester City to win and over 3.5 goals is 4/5 and the hosts to win and over 4.5 goals is 13/8.

Guardiola’s side to win and to keep a clean sheet is 8/11.

Sergio Aguero

Sergio Agüero already has 9 goals this season. The Argentine is 9/4 to break the deadlock, 4/9 to score anytime and 9/2 to get his second hat-trick of the season.

Danny Ings is Saints’ top scorer wit 4. The former Liverpool man is 14/1 to score first and 10/3 to get his fifth of the season anytime.

Both Sergio Agüero and Riyad Mahrez to score is 7/4.

Manchester City vs Southampton: Match preview

Manchester City look simply unstoppable right now.

On Monday night, Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal of the game as they won 1-0 at Wembley against Tottenham.

That puts them on 26 points after just 10 games, level with Liverpool and two points above Chelsea.

Their goal difference though is +24, 7 better than the next best.

In their five home league games, The Citizens have scored 18 goals and that number is expected to increase even more in this fixture.

It was similarly simple on Thursday night as they dismissed Fulham 2-0 in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The hope for Southampton would have to be that the home side have one eye on their forthcoming Champions League fixture.

Their only defeat of the season so far came in that competition on matchday 1 when Olympique Lyonnais stunned the Etihad.

However, back to back away wins over Hoffenheim and Shakhtar Donetsk leaves them top of Group F.

Another win over the Ukrainian side on Wednesday could confirm their place in the knockout phase.

It’s one game at a time though and their sole focus, for now, will be on Southampton.

A terrifying prospect if you’re of a Southampton persuasion.

Saints shooting boots search

Can Southampton keep them out?

Mark Hughes’ side haven’t been too bad defensively, conceding just 14 in 10.

However, scoring goals has been a massive problem for them.

Despite the fact that only Manchester City and Chelsea have mustered more shots then Southampton this season, they’ve scored just 6 goals.

At their current convention rate, for them to match the below par 37 goals they scored last season, they’ll have to have over 900 shots.

The current Premier League record is 834 which is held by Chelsea of the 2009/10 season who of course won the title that season.

Not a good sign.

This has been brought to the fore in their last two matches in particular.

A respectable 0-0 draw at high-flying Bournemouth was followed by a frustrating draw of the same scoreline at home to fellow strugglers Newcastle.

That means, they’ve won just one game all season and they can not afford a hammering here.

They might be in for one though.

Manchester City Kevin De Bruyne

Some of Manchester City’s most important players have returned to the squad in recent weeks but they do still have some injury problems.

Goalkeeper Ederson has kept 7 clean sheets so far and hasn’t conceded a Premier League goal for over 10 hours.

He also managed a Premier League assist in the win over Huddersfield, the only goalkeeper to do so thus far.

Kyle Walker’s return to fitness is timely with Danilo sidelined with an ankle injury.

Pep Guardiola may rotate his centre-back pairing although, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte appear to be the first choice duo now.

İlkay Gündoğan is out with a hamstring injury.

His return date is as yet unknown.

But Fernandinho, who was exceptional on Monday night, appears to have the legs to play every match.

Kevin De Bruyne started the win in Kharkiv a week and a half ago and started the Carabao Cup tie on Thursday.

However, he suffered a recurrence of his injury in that match and will be out again for 5-6 weeks.

Bernardo Silva has proved a more than capable replacement.

The Portuguese international has scored 5 goals this season and has formed a great partnership with his namesake David.

2018 PFA Young Player of the Year Leroy Sané has been struggling for starts recently but may well be rotated in for this one.

Similarly Gabriel Jesus might come in for Sergio Agüero with Shakhtar in mind.

Whoever is picked, it’ll be a very strong team that’ll have far too much for Southampton.

Southampton team news vs Manchester City

For Southampton, they’ve had a free week after their Carabao Cup tie at Leicester was postponed following the helicopter tragedy.

Alex McCarthy has played every minute in the League so far and will start in goal.

Wesley Hoedt and Ryan Bertrand also haven’t missed a minute yet but their defensive capabilities will be tested in this one.

Jannik Vestergaard has been dropped recently with Jack Stephens getting the nod at centre-back.

In their last two, Mark Hughes has gone with a front two but it would be very brave to do the same here.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who sat out the Newcastle game, will be brought back into midfield.

Mohamed Elyounoussi missed a great chance in that game as he looks for his first ever Premier League goal.

But the whole team has been struggling for goals.

Danny Ings has the most (4) and should start up front ahead of Long, Austin or Gabbiadini.

Mark Hughes would love to get one over his former employers but that seems highly unlikely.
