Manchester City vs Norwich: Match details
Match: Manchester City vs Norwich
Competition: Premier League
Date: August 21, 2021
Kick-off time: 3:00 pm, August 21, 2021 (UK time)
Stadium: Etihad Stadium
Betting prediction: Manchester City 2-0 Norwich
Despite their frustrating start away from home last weekend in a 1-0 loss to Tottenham, Manchester City should be able to kick-start their title defense properly when they host Norwich at the Etihad. The Canaries hardly gave Liverpool a scare at Carrow Road last time out, suffering a 3-0 loss against the Reds, and similar is expected on their travels this Saturday.
Despite City remaining without Kevin De Bruyne, Pep Guardiola’s men should be able to see out a comfortable home win against a side they smashed 5-0 in the 2019-20 Premier League season – the last time they clashed on the blue half of Manchester. De Bruyne’s absence is likely to still be felt despite Jack Grealish’s presence in the side, but a comfortable 2-0 result seems like a safe prediction.
Manchester City vs Norwich: Recommended bets
Correct Score: Manchester City 2-0 Norwich (6.5/1 odds)
There is no doubting the absolute quality which Manchester City have as a collective, and their ability to put anyone to the sword on any given day. But the absence of Kevin De Bruyne was evident and glaring in their 1-0 loss against Tottenham, and City could feel that loss once more despite Norwich being their opposition this weekend. Grealish is a gifted player, but when it comes to chance creation, he is not as versatile as KDB. Coupled with Ilkay Gündogan missing out through injury, and inconsistent goal returns through the center forward channel, doubling down on a muted 2-0 home win is not a terrible shout.
To Score First: Riyad Mahrez
No one will expect Norwich to play with a high line and allow City a chance to get at them with complete ease, but the Citizens will craft their chances despite the Canaries’ efforts to scupper Pep Guardiola’s match plan. This could be a match won off individual brilliance or a set-piece, and perhaps there is no better option in the Sky Blues’ likely matchday XI to cash in on than Riyad Mahrez. A master at tucking in on his left foot or hitting a sweetly-struck free-kick, the Algerian international will likely have a massive role to play in any big chances which City get their hands on.

Manchester City vs Norwich: Match preview
If there was ever a moment of irony, it was last weekend when a wasteful Manchester City failed to find the back of the net against Harry Kane’s Tottenham, in Nuno Espírito Santo’s first win in charge of Spurs.
South Korean star Son Heung-min found the only goal of the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with City having limped back to port after an unaccustomed result saw them held at bay by their opposition.
It was a perfect example of why Pep Guardiola’s outfit remains desperate to find a proper center-forward solution this summer, with Kane the long-desired target of recruitment plans under the Spaniard.
The likes of Ferran Torres, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, and Phil Foden are just not capable of filling the void left by Sergio Agüero’s legacy on the blue half of Manchester. How Pep tackles Norwich at the weekend could give a clue as to what in-house solutions he could favor, should the club fail in their pursuit of Kane. Even though City was without a high-scoring center-forward last term, none of the current crop of attackers are even remotely clinical enough to consistently tuck away the high volume of chances the club produces.
No one is expecting Norwich to get any result at the weekend, but if the Canaries do manage to steal anything from City, it likely will come down to this very issue.
Norwich must move past a frustrating beginning to life back in the Premier League
Daniel Farke could not have asked for a more difficult start, as Norwich look to establish themselves in the Premier League this season.
The Canaries, tasked with opening their 2021-22 campaign at home against Liverpool, look ahead to their clash with Manchester City in the knowledge that fixtures against Leicester City and Arsenal follow, while a trip to Everton on matchday six presents the club with the task of dealing with five of last season’s top-ten inside the first month and a half of their return to the English top flight.
But perhaps the light at the end of the tunnel is the comfort of knowing that Norwich could go on somewhat of a run of results after running the gauntlet in the season’s opening exchanges, despite the not-so-friendly reminder of how easy it is to be primed for relegation even before Boxing day.
And it could be that Norwich is more equipped this time around to truly fight for a place in the league next season, after a flurry of transfer business this summer. A double swoop for Werder Bremen pair Josh Sargent and Milot Rashica signalled two very strong pieces of business, while another double raid – this time on PAOK Thessaloniki – netted the club highly-touted Greek youngster Christos Tzolis and Dimitrios Giannoulis. Deals for Angus Gunn, Ben Gibson, Pierre Lees-Melou, and a loan agreement for Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour went a long way in utilizing the funds received through the sale of Emi Buendía to Aston Villa.
It will be hard going at first, but the increased depth of quality in the Norwich squad under Farke this time around should be cause for optimism.
Manchester City team news vs Norwich
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is set to potentially be without four midfielders, as City looks to rebound against Norwich after an opening-day defeat at Tottenham.
Ilkay Gündogan joins Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne on the treatment table, while Bernando Silva’s intentions to leave the club this summer should also rule him out of a starting birth at the Etihad.
Jack Grealish looks set to keep his place in the XI, but Benjamin Mendy is expected to be dropped after a torrid time against Spurs.
Norwich team news vs Manchester City
Daniel Farke is not one to panic and ring the changes when things do not go Norwich’s way, and the German is likely to run out the same XI this weekend against City that lost to Liverpool at Carrow Road last time out.
Farke could be without up to five first-team squad members for the trip, but with none vital to his first XI plans, it should be business as usual on the tactics board.
