Manchester City vs Everton: Match preview

In recent years, this fixture has felt a guaranteed 3 points for Manchester City.

While the Premier League is hailed for its competitiveness and how anybody can beat anybody else on their day, City versus Everton is a caveat to those expressions. They are currently on an 8-game win streak in this head-to-head with 7 of those 8 wins coming by at least a 2-goal winning margin; an aggregate score of 23:5.

The Everton side that started the season under Rafa Benitez winning 4 of their first 5 matches this season in all competitions would be an ideal candidate to shake that up. However, the current side missing Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure look a poor imitation of that side.

The form of Demarai Gray has also evaporated, having gone from 3 goals in his first 4 games at the club to none in the last seven. It is a similar story for Andros Townsend, who after the September international break scored 3 in 4 games and was averaging nearly 3 shots per game but since the October international break has zero goals and averages just 1 shot every 2 games.

It is, therefore, no surprise to see that Everton are without a win since the end of September, picking up just 3 points of a possible 15 in that time. The games aren’t getting any easier either with Manchester City here followed by Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal all to come before the busy Christmas period begins.

Of course, City have their own issues to contend with, albeit ones that are having no discernible impact on their results as of yet. The failure to sign Harry Kane in the summer, coupled with the injury to Ferran Torres and Raheem Sterling being out of favour leaves Pep’s side short on recognised goal threats.

They also have the short-term problem of a lack of creative midfielders with the loss of de Bruyne for 2 weeks and the potential loss of Foden and Grealish due to injury for this match.

You would suspect regardless of who does walk onto the pitch for City on Sunday, they will have far more quality available to them than Everton though. However, Rafa is a manager that has done relatively well against Pep’s City in the past, all things considered.

The first three times he faced City with Newcastle, he kept the games tight losing either by a single goal or a late goal to double the lead. The fourth and last time, they beat City 2-1 in Newcastle. Even with injuries, this Everton squad is a lot stronger than anything Rafa had at his disposal under Mike Ashley at Newcastle. Can he squeeze an unlikely point or even three out of the favourites for the title? Probably not. They will at least make a game of it this time around though.

Manchester City team news vs Everton

The breaking news on Friday surrounded Kevin De Bruyne who has tested positive for COVID after returning from international duty with Belgium. The 30-year-old midfielder has only started in half of Manchester City’s league games so far this season and will now miss 3 to 4 matches due to quarantine.

With Jack Grealish and Phil Foden returning from international duty with England with knocks and needing a late fitness test to be involved, City are looking light on midfielders at the moment beyond Ilkay Gündogan and Bernardo Silva.

Benjamin Mendy remains suspended pending the outcome of his hearing in court after being charged by police with six counts of rape.

Ferran Torres suffered a broken metatarsal while on international duty with Spain last month and is expected to be out until mid-January at the earliest.

Liam Delap is also ruled out with an ankle injury.

However, Aymeric Laporte returns after serving a suspension following his sending off against Crystal Palace. He is expected to relegate John Stones to the bench and resume his partnership with Ruben Dias.

Everton team news vs Manchester City

Gylfi Sigurdsson has been suspended from all first-team duties and he hasn’t been registered in Everton’s Premier League squad for this season following his arrest over child-sex offences.

Mason Holgate is also ruled out due to suspension following his red card against Tottenham before the international break.

Abdoulaye Doucoure remains on the injury list due to the ankle problem that has kept him out of the last 3 Premier League squads for Everton.

Tom Davies suffered a knee injury in training and will be unavailable for at least a month.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks set to miss several more weeks of football due to the quadriceps injury that has plagued him this season. The striker was originally ruled out for 2 weeks by his manager but has since missed 8 league games and it seems he won’t be back on the pitch until December now, at the earliest.

However, there is good news regarding Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes. The pair, who have missed the last 3 and 6 league games respectively, returned to training prior to the international break and should be available for selection again here.
