It may seem a boring storyline to some, but those who love Premier League football will certainly not complain; Manchester City and Chelsea are through to the final in Istanbul in an all-English contest proving that both the Premier League - and the money involved in it - are on the cusp of real dominance on the continent. But first, these two sides clash at the Etihad with City capable of securing the league, while the Blues need to solidify their hold on a top-four finish.

Betting prediction: Manchester City 1-0 Chelsea

Honestly, this has the potential to be far too close to call, but a lot is riding for both Manchester City and Chelsea to try to take away the full three-point haul. City has one additional day of rest and that could come into play, but Chelsea has been the real deal under Thomas Tuchel, and the tactical battle that could ensue against Pep Guardiola could be incredibly entertaining given what is at stake. A City win nets them another Premier League title, while Chelsea would make one more step towards guaranteed Champions League football next season thanks to a top-four finish. At the end of the day, I’m pegging City to edge this one out and confirm their reinstatement at the top of the English footballing pyramid.

Manchester City vs Chelsea: Recommended bets

Halftime/Full-time: Draw – Manchester City

Despite being the home side for this one, Manchester City still has to be at their very best if they intend on taking all the points off Chelsea, who undoubtedly will be up for the tactical requirements on the day given their improvements in the second half of the campaign. But the advantage could go to City, who, like novocaine, so often only need time to whittle you down until they inevitably find a breakthrough. A second-half goal to settle proceedings is a decent bet, though City opening their account in the early exchanges would hardly be a shock to anyone either.

To Score Anytime: Phil Foden

Few players have been more influential for their clubs this season than Phil Foden has been for Manchester City. The 20-year-old England international and City academy graduate has taken his opportunity at the Etihad with both hands and firmly planted himself as a critical piece to the Guardiola jigsaw puzzle as the season has rolled on. He has hardly put a foot wrong in his last eight appearances and could be just the tonic for finding the chink in the Chelsea breastplate.

Manchester City vs Chelsea: Match preview

The last time Pep Guardiola finished a campaign as both domestic league champion and champion of Europe was back in the 2010-11 campaign while he was still at Barcelona. A decade later, the generational manager has yet to repeat that feat, despite being at Bayern Munich before his tenure at Manchester City took hold. On the cusp of being crowned Premier League champion should City win at the weekend, it will be Pep’s 31st piece of silverware on the touchline, and his 3rd while at the Etihad through his five seasons at the club thus far.

There is never a lack of motivation for the Santpedor native and former Barcelona and Spanish midfielder. His incessant desire to win everything at the highest level is infectious, and though many will criticize how Manchester City operates as a club that so freely spends in the transfer market, it still remains Guardiola’s job to take the expensive pieces and make sure they operate cohesively on the pitch. Money does not guarantee success, though it certainly does help close the gap to it.

But Guardiola – much like during his time at Bayern – will not be judged this season on when City inevitably lift their 6th league title (4th in the Premier League), but if they are triumphant in their task in Istanbul on the 29th of May. City has been just about the best club side in Europe this season, up there with Bayern as per usual, but it will be all for naught if he once again stumbles at the final hurdle. For all of Manchester City’s dominance on the domestic front, this was a club that has been built to not just dominate England, but the continent as well. It is strange to consider that, baring some sort of monumental collapse in the league, that another Premier League title is not the focus, but really, the icing on the cake. Guardiola will expect his side to go out and confirm their reinstatement to the top of the English footballing pyramid this weekend, and anything but three points will just not do, but their late-season clash with Chelsea will unquestionably be viewed as a rehearsal dinner for the actual act. And in that light, success at the weekend is even more valuable in their push for a dream European final.

Premier League security must remain the number one priority at Chelsea

If you were to ask anyone back in December where they thought Chelsea would be come May, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone that would stick their neck out and say within touching distance of top four, with a booked flight to Istanbul for the Champions League final. Fast-forward past Frank Lampard’s sacking, the hiring of Thomas Tuchel, and the much-improved football on offer at Stamford Bridge under the German, that that is precisely where Chelsea currently reside.

After dispatching European juggernaut Real Madrid over two legs in the semi-finals of the Champions League and booking passage to the Bosphorus, Chelsea returns to the domestic front just three points clear of West Ham United in 5th who continue to breathe down the neck of their fellow London rivals. City and Chelsea may well be viewing the proceedings at the weekend as a dress rehearsal for what is to come in the last weekend of May, but Thomas Tuchel must remain on the ball regarding what the immediate focus has to be for his Blues; finishing in the top four.

Chelsea has every chance of coming out on the winning side of the argument in the Champions League final, but to look too far ahead to something that is truly up in the air would be doing a disservice to all the hard work that has been seen since his appointment. The weekend cannot just be about how to get one over on Pep with the view of replicating it in three weeks’ time, but rather, how to use their form in the league as a platform for success for the final showdown to come.  It must be business as usual on Saturday. To stumble in the league now would throw a spanner in the works and threaten all the credible ground gained after what was shaping up to be a dreadful campaign by comparison. Even if Chelsea do not kick-on and best City in the final, to secure top four on the back of all the impressive performances and clear improvement under Tuchel will be just what the doctor ordered for Roman Abramovich, and surely the Blues would be considered one of the sides that could be a genuine threat next term.

Manchester City team news vs Chelsea

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are through to the clubs’ first-ever Champions League final, but a win against Chelsea guarantees them another Premier League crown, and that could be reflected in the matchday XI.

City’s only absentee is the suspended John Stones. There may be some measure of rotation, but the hot-hands could be kept in play with City’s 4th Premier League title (6th overall) just over the next hill.

Chelsea team news vs Manchester City

Chelsea is also through to the final of the Champions League thanks to a consummate performance at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening. The Blues must now return to domestic commitments and push to secure Europe through the Premier League.

Thomas Tuchel will likely rotate more heavily than Guardiola given one less day of rest, but a strong XI will undoubtedly be fielded.

The only concern for the German tactician comes by way of the continued absence of Mateo Kovačić, who is likely not suitably ready just yet.
