Manchester City vs Brighton: Premier League preview

Manchester City welcome Brighton to the Etihad on Wednesday night.

Man City have made a great start to 2021, picking up where they left off at the end of 2020. The Cityzens beat Chelsea 3-1 in the Premier League last weekend and have followed that up with cup wins over Manchester United and Birmingham City.

Bernardo Silva scored a brace in Sunday’s FA Cup third-round win over Birmingham at the Etihad. Phil Foden was also on the scoresheet. City will face League Two side Cheltenham in the next round.

City’s solid run of form has seen them climb up the table. Pep Guardiola’s side begin the week fifth on 29 points, although they have a couple of games in hand. In fact, if City were to win both their games in hand right now, they would move above Liverpool.

Brighton scraped through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a narrow penalty shootout win at Newport on Sunday. Graham Potter’s side have failed to win any of their last eight in the Premier League and find themselves one place and three points above the relegation zone. To be fair to the Seagulls, they have picked up draws in four of their last five league games, including points against Wolves and West Ham.

Man City’s home form this season ranks 4th in the league, with four wins and two draws from seven matches at the Etihad. Notably, Man City have conceded the joint-fewest home goals in the league (7). Brighton’s away record isn’t great, with two wins and three draws from eight matches on the road.

Manchester City have a great recent record against Brighton winning all seven matches against the Seagulls – including one in the FA Cup – since their promotion in 2017. Man City have kept five clean sheets in those seven games.

City have never dropped points against Brighton in the Premier League. Their most recent meeting in July ended in a 5-0 win for City at the Amex. Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick, while Gabriel Jesus and Bernardo Silva were also on target.

Manchester City team news vs Brighton

Covid-19 continues to impact the availability of a number of Manchester City players, although a few key players will be returning from their self-isolation period, including goalkeeper Ederson.

Sergio Aguero, however, will miss out after coming into close contact with someone who has tested positive. “Unfortunately, Sergio was in contact, more than usual, with a person who is positive so he isolates for a few days. He is negative, but the protocol says if we have been in contact we have to isolate”, Pep Guardiola said.

Eric Garcia is also unavailable for the same reason, as are fringe players Tommy Doyle, Cole Palmer, and veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Aymeric Laporte has returned to training following a hamstring injury, although he remains doubtful for Wednesday night. “Hopefully one week, ten days he will be okay”, Guardiola said.

Raheem Sterling and Nathan Ake both have muscle injuries and are not likely to be risked.

Ilkay Gundogan was an unused substitute against Birmingham City, while John Stones came on as a second-half substitute. Both players should return to Wednesday’s starting eleven.

Brighton team news vs Manchester City

Brighton could be without as many as nine first-team players.

Yves Bissouma serves a suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards.

Tariq Lamptey has suffered a setback in his recovery from injury. “He will probably have to take a couple of steps back, which is disappointing for us and obviously for him too. It means he is going to be out for a few more weeks yet”, Graham Potter said.

Adam Lallana is set to miss out through illness, although it’s not confirmed if that is Covid-19. Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Steven Alzate comes back into contention after recovering from illness himself.

Forwards Danny Welbeck and Aaron Connolly both miss out as well, so Neal Maupay should lead Brighton’s attack.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh will be assessed after picking up a knock at the weekend.

South African Percy Tau made his Brighton debut in the FA Cup and should at least feature from the bench against Man City.

Backup goalkeeper Jason Steele was the start of the show against Newport County, saving four penalties in the shootout, but he is set to be replaced by current first-choice Rober Sanchez.

Polish midfielder Jakub Moder has returned to Brighton following a loan spell at Lech Poznan but the 21-year-old is still building up match fitness.

Jose Izquierdo and Florin Andone remain sidelined.
