Match preview
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – MAY 23: Fernandinho lifts the Premier League Trophy with Benjamin Mendy, Riyāḍ Maḥrez, Ederson and Sergio Agüero following the Premier League match Manchester City and Everton at Etihad Stadium on May 23, 2021 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images)
The title race has gone to the wire, but will Manchester City retain their Premier League crown?
The Citizens could, pretty much, have rubber stamped the trophy last weekend, but slipped up at the London Stadium.
In that one, Man City actually found themselves 2-0 down against West Ham, fighting back thanks to a lovely strike from Jack Grealish and then an own goal.
They were then presented with the golden chance to win it, awarded a penalty with just four minutes remaining.
Riyāḍ Maḥrez shouldered the responsibility, but his tame effort was parried away by Łukasz Fabiański.
So, 2-2 it finished in East London, but Manchester City’s fate very much remains in their own hands.
Given that they still have a point advantage over Liverpool, a win will secure Man City’s eighth top-flight title, six of which have been in the last decade.
If the Etihad does witness yet another trophy presentation, it would be Pep Guardiola’s fourth English top-flight title.
This would be a new record for an overseas manager, with only Sir Alex Ferguson, George Ramsay, Bob Paisley, Tom Watson, Matt Busby and Herbert Chapman boasting more.
Aston Villa though, and their boss Steven Gerrard, would love to spoil the party.
The Villans are seven-times champions of England, level with their hosts for now, but currently find themselves in the no man’s land that is mid-table.
On Thursday night, they drew 1-1 with Burnley at Villa Park, thanks to Emi Buendía’s equaliser mere moments after the break.
This though means the Claret and Blue Army have won just two of their last ten outings, only beating Norwich and Burnley since 10 March.
Aston Villa haven’t won at Man City since 2007 but, if you’re of a Liverpool persuasion, just a draw will do, masterminded by your club legend.
Will it be a day of celebration for Manchester City?

BRIGHTON, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 23: Jack Grealish of Manchester City runs with the ball during the Premier League match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City at American Express Community Stadium on October 23, 2021 in Brighton, England. (Photo by Steve Bardens/Getty Images)
With Kyle Walker, John Stones and Rúben Dias out injured, defence is where Manchester City have concerns.
If none of this trio are fit, Nathan Aké will surely come in, alongside Aymeric Laporte, with 37 year old Fernandinho making way.
Phil Foden will be looking to join Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Riyāḍ Maḥrez by reaching double figures for league goals this season.
All four of that quartet could start, although Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling might have something to say about that.
Grealish made 213 appearance for Villa but will be looking to win his first major honour against them.
Rodri will continue at the base of midfield, chosen over İlkay Gündoğan who could be on the move this season.

Steven Gerrard did name a strong side for Thursday’s draw with Burnley and will go all out to get a result in this one too.
Youngster Carney Chukwuemeka was given just his second Premier League start in that one, but is likely to be back on the bench here.
That’s because at least one of Philippe Coutinho or Danny Ings will come in, alongside Ollie Watkins with, perhaps, Emi Buendía missing out.
Coutinho scored a famous goal against Manchester City for Liverpool in 2014, one of five goals he’s managed against them in seven appearances.
At the back, with Ezri Konsa out due to a horrible injury, Calum Chambers will partner Tyrone Mings at the back.
Ashley Young was part of the Manchester United team denied a Premier League title by that Sergio Agüero goal a decade ago.
He’ll be a substitute here with Lucas Digne at left-back.
