The Reds welcome West Brom to Anfield in Liverpool on Boxing Day.

Liverpool are unbeaten in the last 10 Premier League matches against West Brom. Although, a near full-strength Liverpool side lost 2-3 to the Baggies here in the FA Cup the last time the two sides met at Anfield.

That victory was 1 of only 4 that West Brom have from their 34 visits to Anfield since the 1960s. Their last league wins here were back-to-back games in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons.

Both teams changed their managers between the two matches, with Liverpool replacing club Legend Kenny Dalglish with Brendan Rodgers. For the Baggies, Roy Hodgson was the victor on his return to Anfield, having been sacked by the club in 2010. He was replaced by Steve Clarke, who was in the Liverpool dugout as Dalglish’s assistant the season prior.

Mohamed Salah looked back to his very best last weekend against Crystal Palace. The Egyptian international’s 30-minute cameo saw him score 2 goals, the second of which was a stunning long-range effort curled into the top corner from outside the box.

The former 2-time winner of the Golden Boot Award now leads the scoring charts once again with 13 Premier League goals this season. Salah is the 15/8 favourite to score the game’s opener on Sunday. Or 1/3 to bag a goal at any time during the game against West Brom.

Liverpool vs West Brom: What are the betting odds?

The Reds have been perfect at Anfield so far this season, picking up 7 wins from 7 so far. They are the 1/8 odds on favourites to extend that to 8 wins on Sunday.

West Brom have won just 1 of their last 14 Premier League matches. They start the match as huge 16/1 outsiders to pick up their first away win of the season at Anfield.

A draw has been the most common outcome of matches between these sides in recent years, with 5 of the last 7 Premier League matches ending in a stalemate. Odds of 8/1 are available if you see Liverpool and West Brom cancelling each other out once more on Sunday.

Liverpool vs West Brom: Match preview

There was a time when breaking down a low block against a team in the bottom half of the table was considered the Achilles heel of Klopp’s Liverpool.

What exactly changed to turn this weakness into strength has been a hot-topic of debate amongst Liverpool fans. Particularly since this improvement coincided with selling their recognised playmaker, Philippe Coutinho, to Barcelona for a club-record fee.

The data on his is clear though. During the 2017/18, no club picked up more points from the teams ranked 7th to 20th in the table. They were also the first side to beat the 10 teams who finished in the bottom half of the table both home and away.

Manchester City’s superiority over Liverpool that season was in taking more points from the top 6 rather than being flat-track bullies to the ‘weaker’ sides.

Liverpool’s record at home in particularly impressive over the past few seasons. Last year the only points dropped were in a 1-1 draw with Burnley in the penultimate home game of the season, with the title already won and everybody in celebration mode. This season they have a perfect home record so far after 7 games.

The Return of Sam Allardyce

However, if there is one man who would love to spoil their party more than any other, it is Sam Allardyce. He seems to take a lot of joy from taking points off of managers with bigger reputations than himself.

Big Sam is known as a ‘relegation specialist’. A manager clubs call on when desperation to survive hits and you care only about staying up, not the quality of football on display. With Premier League survival being valued at £100-200m a season, it is easy to see why any manager who offers a glimmer of hope in bleak situations would be valued.

His CV includes successfully taking over Newcastle, Blackburn, Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Everton in relegation battles and steering them to safety. He also joined Bolton and West Ham outside the top flight and guided both back to the Premier League.

For many neutrals, who watch matches to be entertained, seeing him back in the Premier League won’t be met with enthusiasm. But for fans of the Baggies, he likely gives them a little bit of belief this Christmas.

Liverpool team news vs West Brom

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez remain on the long-term injury list for Liverpool due knee injuries. This despite the positive news of Virgil’s return to training this week. Both players aren’t expected to be involved again until later in the season, if at all.

Thiago Alcantara was also pictured in training in midweek fueling rumours that he will be involved on Sunday. However, it seems this match will come a little soon for him and it could be around New Year when we see him in Red once again.

Konstantinos Tsimikas and Diogo Jota are both ruled out until the end of January with knee injuries.

James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri is also ruled out with hamstring and calf strains respectively. Although, Klopp suggested in his press conference that they are more involved in training and close to a return.

In more positive news, Naby Keita completed a full 90 minutes in the 0-7 rout of Palace last weekend. His workload will surely be managed over this busy period to ensure he stays fit. Curtis Jones could be restored to the starting XI in his place here.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked up his first league minutes this season in a 15-minute cameo at Selhurst Park. He is expected to increase his work-load with larger cameos over the coming weeks to build up his fitness towards starting matches again, possibly in the FA Cup.

Mohamed Salah was rested against Palace, coming off the bench for only the final 30 minutes of the match. He will be restored to the starting XI here, likely in place of Minamino. Although, Klopp may opt to rest Firmino here with the matches against Newcastle and Southampton in mind.

West Brom team news vs Liverpool

The big news for West Brom is the return of Matheus Pereira. He has missed the last 3 matches due to suspension following his red card against Crystal Palace. Matt Phillips is the most likely to make way for the skillful Brazilian who has created more than double the number of chances to any other Baggies player, despite missing 4 of their 14 matches.

However, as one man returns, another is ruled out. This time it is Jake Livermore who is ruled out for suspension for West Brom’s three matches over the Christmas and New Year period following his red card versus Aston Villa last weekend. Romaine Sawyers and Conor Gallagher are expected to make a double pivot in midfield.

Conor Townsend continues to be ruled out by a knee injury that has caused him to miss the last 4 games. He likely won’t return for West Brom until after their FA Cup tie against Blackpool.

Hal Robson-Kanu is yet to start a match for West Brom this season. He was out with a fractured wrist, which he reinjured after returning to action. He is expected back at some point between now and new year.

Kyle Bartley has missed the last 3 matches due to a lower leg injury. He is back in training and could have a spot on the bench here should he pass a fitness test.
