Liverpool vs Southampton betting tips: Preview, predictions & odds

This was hardly the title defense that Liverpool supporters would have dreamed of this season, but hard lessons could bear fruit moving forward for the Reds, who until then, are tasked with securing Europe in some measure next season. They welcome Southampton who mathematically is not safe from relegation, but while they likely will be safe come the end of term, they are a club desperate for new life before another poor season may not come back to bite them in a serious way.

Betting prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Southampton

Southampton did a decent job of earning a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City their last time out, but it is hard to see them taking anything off of Liverpool at Anfield here. The Reds come into proceedings undefeated in their last-five fixtures (3-2-0), with a three-point haul seeing them leap ahead of Tottenham into 6th and in position to achieve European football next term in what has been a dreadful season for the current holders. Liverpool will be fully rested as well after their clash with bitter rivals Manchester United was postponed last weekend, and that badly needed respite should carry over into a result.

Liverpool vs Southampton: Recommended bets

To Score First: Mohamed Salah

It is hard to look past Mohamed Salah this season once again, with the Egyptian international now sitting on 20-goals in the Premier League and neck and neck with Harry Kane for the golden boot. He’s bagged five goals in his last eight appearances across all competitions for Liverpool while netting in each of his last three starts for the Reds. Backing him to add to yet another impressive goal tally would hardly be a stretch.

Winning Margin: Liverpool +1

Other than Liverpool dispatching Arsenal 3-0 at the Emirates in the not-so-distant past, the Reds have really failed to dominate their opponents on the scoresheet. Despite their recent run of results that have taken them back into the thick of it for European football next season, Liverpool has struggled to get results by any clear margins. I still think they will pull out a win at the weekend, but the baseline data suggests they may struggle to do it comfortably.

Liverpool vs Southampton: Match preview

A summer of change could be on the horizon at Liverpool after what has been an abysmally poor title defense that will see them finish over 20-points adrift of Manchester City in all likelihood. The main and obvious concern will be how the club tackles the paper-thin nature of the squad in many respects, and a chief reason why the club has struggled so frustratingly this term given the rampant injury concerns seen for almost the entirety of the campaign on all fronts.

The business that Liverpool did conduct has been good, however. Diogo Jota started life at the club as a house on fire, and though he has cooled off, the overall business to bring him in from Wolves should be lauded. Thiago started slowly, but as he has finally begun to settle, the quality seen from them – which many have used to previously label him the best central midfielder in the world – begun to become more apparent. Ozan Kabak has also been very good since his January loan deal, and the trust put in Nat Phillips after coming in from the U23’s was well-placed. Liverpool has not done enough over the last two seasons to really address the true lack of depth, but when they do conduct business, they usually get it right of late and that same success rate may need to be called upon sooner rather than later.

There are some that have begun to ask the question of how the club rebound next season and tries to push their way back into not just top-four contention, but also how they can reestablish their title-challenging credentials. Some may think the notion of moving on from Roberto Firmino as the key central figure in the Liverpool front three is one that should be actively explored, despite the admiration that Jürgen Klopp has for the Brazilian attacking midfielder-turned-center forward. Without delving into too much detail, the notion that Mohamed Salah continues to produce the goods is a positive sign, but there was a period where Jota threatened to displace Firmino through the middle, and that reality could serve as evidence that his place in the team is one of many squad questions that need answering sooner rather than later if Liverpool is to get back on track moving forward. It is likely that his influence remains at its status quo for the rest of this season, and that includes the role he is all but sure to play against Southampton, but refreshment and reinforcement are clearly needed at Anfield, and Firmino may not be safe.

Southampton; Nothing much more to say that has not already been said

When you have put in the type of season that Southampton and boss Ralph Hasenhüttl have this season, you will count your blessings when something – anything – actually goes the way that you can benefit from. The successful appeal against the red card to key center back Jannik Vestergaard constitutes even the slightest amount of upside during a period and season where Saints were hardly guaranteed to avoid the drop. Considering some of the players the club has given the Premier League over the years, and who their manager is, that is as frustrating a situation as ever.

But it is hard to speak about Saints without putting the same broken record on repeat at this point, because the same issues that have plagued them in previous seasons, and throughout the entirety of this season, persist to the current situation at hand as the season is in its final phases. A paper-thin squad with no semblance of depth has been a chief reason why Saints have been firmly rooted in the bottom half of the table after a scintillating start to the year that had many dreaming of finishing in the European places. As the vaunted Premier League calendar slogged on, and injuries began to mount while tired legs crept in, Saints crept out of contention and further down the table. Though a credible manager in his own right, there was and is little that Hasenhüttl could do to avoid the manner in which his squad disintegrated under the strain.

Southampton is currently 10-points ahead of the drop zone but remains mathematically in with a chance to get relegated. While it remains unlikely, it is hardly the place that the club has ambitions to reside in. Change in operations from top to bottom is needed in terms of how the club builds for the rigors of the English top-flight, but also, change from its Austrian headmaster is also required; with his high octane and high press system not suitable for a team as thin on numbers as Southampton currently is. Safety this season remains likely despite the math involved, but if Saints are to try to recreate what clubs the likes of West Ham United and Aston Villa have begun to undertake of late, they have to truly do what it takes.

Liverpool team news vs Southampton

Little has changed for Liverpool and boss Jürgen Klopp when it comes to the status of the first-team, and much of the same can be expected at the weekend against Southampton.

The unfit quartet of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, and Jordan Henderson remains and will all be unavailable, as well young keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The matchday XI that was selected to feature against Manchester United in the postponed fixture is likely to be selected again here.

Southampton team news vs Liverpool

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl is still unable to catch a break this season, as his Saints team remains ravaged by fitness concerns in a frustrating season.

Danny Ings, Ryan Bertrand, Oriol Romeu, and Will Smallbone are all out through injury with Ings potentially missing the rest of the campaign.

On-loan winger Takumi Minamino is unable to feature against his parent club, while Michael Obafemi is a doubt for selection as well.
