Betting prediction: Liverpool 3 – 0 Southampton

Liverpool welcomes Southampton to Anfield on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Reds have the strong upper hand in the head-to-head, with 23 wins to Southampton’s 11, from their 44 encounters in the Premier League.

This continues when looking back through all competitions, with the Reds having 58 wins to 31 dating back to when they first faced each other in the FA Cup back in 1902; a match won 4-1 by the Saints. Southampton also won the first league meeting between them by the same scoreline in the old Division Two back in 1960.

Recently, it has been near-total dominance for Jurgen Klopp’s side with Southampton’s 1-0 victory back in January breaking up a run of 7 Liverpool wins.

Liverpool vs Southampton: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Liverpool 3 – 0 Southampton is available at odds of 10/1.

2-0 Liverpool win. Liverpool’s last match against Southampton in May finished in a 2-0 win for the Reds. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 8.5/1.

2-2 draw. With Liverpool’s record of scoring at least 2 goals a game, you would suspect that any draw would be a high-scoring one. The Saints have already drawn 2-2 after 90 minutes on 3 occasions this season; against Newcastle, Burnley and Sheffield United. Odds of 21/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

0-1 Southampton win. Liverpool visited Southampton for their first match of 2021 and lost 1-0. You can get odds for another one-goal win for Southampton at 29/1.

Under 2.5 goals. The previous two matches in this head-to-head in 2021 both ended in under 2.5 goal games. You can back another low scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 3/1 for under 2.5 goals.

Diogo Jota Goalscorer. Jota (above) was rested for the midweek Champions League match. After slaloming around the Arsenal defence and goalkeeper last weekend, the 24-year-old forward looks in good form and well-rested. In his career, he has so far drawn a blank in his 4 appearances against the Saints, only 1 of which came with Liverpool. The Portuguese international is 5.5/1 to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 2.05/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Southampton.

Liverpool vs Southampton: What are the betting odds?

The Reds are massive favourites at 1.25/1 to extend their run of home victories in this head-to-head to 5 Premier League games on Saturday.

Whereas, the Saints are 8.5/1 to pick up a first away win at Anfield in the league since 2013.

Odds of 5.75/1 are available if you see Liverpool and Southampton cancelling each other out on Saturday.

Liverpool vs Southampton: Match preview

Jürgen Klopp’s first Premier League match at Anfield was against the Saints and finished 1-1. This remains the only that goal Liverpool have conceded at Anfield in the Premier League against Southampton since the German took charge of the club in October of 2015. A 0-0 draw the following season has been followed by 4 consecutive victories, all with clean sheets.

In theory, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Southampton are a tough opponent for Liverpool as perhaps nobody understands Klopp’s system as well as the man dubbed the ‘Alpine Klopp’ in some sections of the media.

In practice, though, facing a side like Liverpool and trying to mirror their gameplan with inferior players has resulted in defeat for the Saints more often than not. The exception to this was the 1-0 home victory for Southampton at the start of this year.

Liverpool will feel that was a freak result caused mostly by injuries with the team playing central midfield duo Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in defence. This, in turn, weakened both their midfield and their defensive lines and underpinned their poor run of form at the start of 2021 as the club tried to navigate the Premier League without any fit senior central defenders at the club.

Therefore, it is no surprise to see Liverpool head into the match as the heavy favourites. A dominant 4-0 win last weekend against the league’s form side in Arsenal was followed up by a coast to victory with a largely second-string side in midweek against Porto.

Thiago, Milner, Origi, Henderson, and Robertson have all returned from injury in the past week. Keita, Elliott, Jones, Firmino and Gomez aren’t far behind either, as detailed below. This Liverpool side will be nearing full strength as we enter the busiest part of the season and Klopp has them playing in a way few sides can touch right now. It is hard to see where Southampton get anything from this game.

Jurgen Klopp v Southampton

Liverpool team news vs Southampton

Harvey Elliott remains on the long-term injury list following his fracture-dislocation of the ankle injury against Leeds United. While the club’s social media has been showcasing how well he is progressing with his rehab, the talented teenager is still expected to be out until 2022.

The club’s doctor, Jim Moxon, confirmed on the Liverpool website that Curtis Jones had suffered a freak eye injury and that the club would be patient in giving him the full time required to recover.

Roberto Firmino remains ruled out with a hamstring injury. He should be back in action towards the beginning of next month, though.

Similar to Firmino, Joe Gomez isn’t expected back in action until December as he continues his recovery from a calf problem.

Naby Keita is nearing a return to action and has made his comeback to team training. This match will likely come too soon for him but the midfielder should be back in contention for a spot in the middle of the park in the coming games.

Ralph Hasenhutt

Southampton team news vs Liverpool

Stuart Armstrong is ruled out with a calf strain. Ibrahima Diallo might continue in midfield in his absence.

Jack Stephens is back in training earlier than expected after suffering an injury to the tendon in his knee against Manchester City. This match could come a little too soon for him, but the defender is back in contention for the Saints.

Sam McQueen is still out with a ruptured cruciate ligament. Given the fact that he has been out for 3 years now, it is doubtful he will ever play again at Premier League level.

Moussa Djenepo and Nathan Redmond both missed last week’s trip to Norwich. However, Ralph Hasenhüttl confirmed that the pair are back available for the trip to Anfield.
