Betting prediction: Liverpool 2 – 1 Sheffield United

The Reds welcomes Sheffield United to Anfield on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Blades haven’t won a competitive fixture against Liverpool since 2003. The 5 matches since then have seen 4 Liverpool wins and a draw.

Liverpool also have an outstanding record at Anfield. They have won their 2 Premier League games there this season and dropped only 2 points at home all last season. The dropped points coming in July, in a 1-1 draw with Burnley, once they had already wrapped up the league title.

The Reds haven’t lost at home in the Premier League since falling to a 1-2 defeat to Palace here back in April 2017.

To compound matters, the Blades don’t have a great away record in the Premier League. They have lost their 2 away matches so far this season. In addition, they only won 4 away matches during the 2019/20 campaign; only the 3 relegated sides had fewer away wins then Sheffield United.

Liverpool vs Sheffield United: What are the betting odds?

The Reds have won 27 of their last 28 home matches in the Premier League. They have also won each of the last 3 matches against the Blades at Anfield, in all competitions. This sees them start the match as strong 2/9 on favourites.

No side drew more away matches last season than Sheffield United. They drew 9 away matches in total in the Premier League last season. Odds of 11/2 are available if you see Sheffield United holding Liverpool to a draw on Saturday

Sheffield United have lost 6 of their last 7 away matches in the Premier League, including their only 2 of this campaign. As a result, they are rated as huge underdogs here with odds of 11/1.

Liverpool vs Sheffield United: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Liverpool 2 – 1 Sheffield United is available at odds of 15/2.

Liverpool beat Sheffield United 2-0 back in January on their last visit to Anfield. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 7/1.

Sheffield United’s last win at Anfield was back in April 1994. You can back them at 40/1 for the same 1-2 scoreline here on Saturday.

There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Liverpool’s last 8 games in the Premier League. This match is 1/2 on to have over 2.5 goals on Saturday.

Both matches between the sides last season were under 2.5 goal games. You can back another low scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 13/8 for under 2.5 goals.

Sadio Mané scored the opening goal of the game in the Merseyside Derby last weekend. It was also his deflected shot that broke the deadlock to give Liverpool a 0-1 win in Amsterdam in the Champions League in midweek. The on-form Senegalese international is 4/1 to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 20/21 on to bag a goal at any time during the game against Sheffield United.

Rhian Brewster (below) signed for Sheffield United from Liverpool earlier this month in a club-record deal. He made his Premier League debut for the Blades at the weekend against Fulham, coming off the bench to play the final 25 minutes. The England youth international could make his full debut against his former club at the weekend and is 14/1 to score the opening goal of the match. Or you can back Brewster at 15/4 to score at any time against the Reds.

Liverpool vs Sheffield United: Match preview

The two favourites for the 2019/20 Premier League Manager of the Season award face each other at Anfield on Saturday.

While Jurgen Klopp eventually won the award for bringing the Premier League title back to Liverpool after a 30-year absence, many believed Chris Wilder deserved the award just as much as his German counterpart.

Liverpool put in one of their best performances of the season here back in January. The 2-0 score probably doesn’t reflect just how utterly dominant and in control Liverpool were that Thursday evening.

Chris Wilder was under absolutely no illusions of how outplayed his side were on the night in his post-match interview.

“Both parts of the game we couldn’t lay a glove on them, didn’t do anything that has got us in this position. I thought they were outstanding, but they didn’t have to get out of second or third gear. They won every first ball, every second ball, dropped on every second ball, ran forward and ran back, and they did that miles better than us. They still had the humility and the desire to do that as world champions, as European champions, and obviously well on their way to being Premier League champions.”
– Chris Wilder, Sheffield United Manager

Fortress Anfield

During that 2-0 win at Anfield, Sheffield United managed just 2 touches in the Liverpool penalty area prior to the 78th minute. By then, Liverpool were 2-0 ahead and coasting, having taken off the scorer of their second goal Sadio Mané for a well-earned rest.

It has become a recurring pattern in this fixture when the two sides have met in recent years. Liverpool had led both at half time and full time in the 3 most recent home matches against the Blades, in all competitions, while also keeping a clean sheet in each.

Of course, it’s not just Sheffield United that have struggled with the conundrum of how to stop Liverpool at Anfield. Liverpool have scored at least 2 goals in 26 of their last 28 home matches in the Premier League.

Their record here since the start of the 2017/18 season is almost spotless. Burnley were the only side to come away from Anfield last season without suffering defeat. Perhaps they were somewhat fortune in visiting Liverpool when the title was already won.

This underlines how enormous the task is before Sheffield United and Chris Wilder on Saturday. But, it will be a challenge he and his players will relish.

Liverpool team news vs Sheffield United

Virgil van Dijk (above) has been ruled out for the season after rupturing his ACL in the Merseyside Derby last weekend.

Joel Matip, who was subbed in for van Dijk at the weekend, missed the midweek clash against Ajax with a muscular injury. Therefore, we are likely to see Fabinho continue in defence with Henderson or Wijnaldum replacing him as the #6 in midfield.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also on the long-term injury list for Liverpool having suffered a knee injury in pre-season.

Alisson Becker has missed Liverpool’s last 3 matches with a shoulder injury. Adrian will continue between the sticks into November.

Like van Dijk, Thiago Alcantara picked up an injury after a horrific tackle in the Merseyside derby. This caused him to miss the midweek clash against Ajax and the Spanish international midfielder will likely miss out here too.

Konstantinos Tsimikas is also ruled out due to a thigh injury picked up during the Lincoln game in September. He is nearing a return and could be involved for the Reds against FC Midtjylland next week.

Sadio Mané was seen icing his leg after being subbed off against Ajax in midweek. Klopp confirmed Sadio picked up a dead-leg during the match. However, it isn’t expected to keep him out of the game on Saturday.

Naby Keita was expected to be involved in Liverpool’s Champions League opener in Amsterdam. Having sat out the match as he continues his recovery, he is almost certain to be involved against Sheffield United here.

Chris Wilder

Sheffield United team news vs Liverpool

When speaking of Liverpool’s loss of van Dijk before the match, Chris Wilder highlighted how his side also has long term injuries. He also stated that in his opinion, the losses to his squad are bigger than Liverpool losing van Dijk.

“Us losing [John] Fleck, Jack O’Connell and Lys [Mousset] is, I’d say, a bigger loss than losing van Dijk, relatively.”
– Chris Wilder, Sheffield United Manager

Fleck suffered a lower back injury after an unfortunate landing from an aerial challenge. He is expected to be out for four to six weeks. Oliver Norwood looks set to deputise in his absence.

Similar to van Dijk, O’Connell’s season is also over after picking up a serious knee injury. This saw first-choice left-back, Enda Stevens, drop into central defence against Fulham.

Mousset hasn’t featured yet for Sheffield United this season due to an injury to a ligament under his toe. He had surgery on the injury and now begins the process of rehab to return to action.

Max Lowe suffered a concussion after taking a whack on the head early on against Fulham. Former Liverpool player, Jack Robinson, replaced him during the match and looks set to come in once again here.
