Betting prediction: Liverpool 3 – 1 Brighton

Liverpool welcomes Brighton to Anfield on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Reds have the strong upper hand in the head-to-head, with 6 wins to Brighton’s 1, from their 8 encounters in the Premier League.

This record extends into all competitions, too, with the Reds having 19 wins to Brighton’s 5. However, the Seagulls picked up 4 points from 6 against Liverpool last season. This includes a 0-1 win on their last visit to Anfield.

Liverpool vs Brighton: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Liverpool 3 – 1 Brighton is available at odds of 12/1.

2-1 Liverpool win. Liverpool’s last home victory over Brighton came back in November 2019 by a scoreline of 2-1. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 11/1.

0-0 draw. Brighton have had bore draws in 2 of their last 3 league games. Odds of 15/1 are available if you see this match finishing goalless, too.

0-1 Brighton win. Brighton’s last visit to Anfield back in February ended with a 0-1 victory; their first on the red half of Merseyside since the early 1980s. You can back them at 26/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Under 2.5 goals. Both matches between these sides last season were low-scoring games, finishing 1-1 and 0-1. You can back another low scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 2.5/1 for under 2.5 goals.

Mohamed Salah Goalscorer. Salah’s red-hot form continued last weekend with a hat-trick at Old Trafford as the Reds sunk their biggest rivals 0-5 in stunning fashion. It is no surprise to see that the Egyptian King is the 3.4 favourite to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 1.53 for Salah (pictured above) to bag his 11th goal of the season at any time during the game against Brighton.

Liverpool vs Brighton: What are the betting odds?

The Reds had won 9 matches in a row in this head-to-head prior to last season. They are huge 1.25/1 favourites to get back to winning ways and take all 3 points from Brighton on Saturday.

Whereas, the Seagulls are 11/1 to pick up back-to-back wins at Anfield in the league for the first time in their history. They did win back-to-back league and FA Cup matches here back in the early 1980s.

Liverpool have drawn half their home games this season. Brighton have drawn half their matches on the road. Odds of 6/1 are available if you see Liverpool and Brighton cancelling each other out on Saturday.

Liverpool vs Brighton: Match preview

If there is such a thing as a good time to face Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, this certainly isn’t it.

His Reds have been running riot recently. They have scored at least 3 goals in all but 2 of their last 11 games. Those matches were a 2-2 draw against the league champions, Manchester City, and in midweek when their second-string beat Preston 0-2 in the EFL Cup. They have scored 37 goals in total in that time; an average of 3.4 goals per game. They have also kept 3 clean sheets in their last 4 games, despite fielding 3 different goalkeepers across those matches.

Liverpool do give teams a lot of space, though, which means Brighton will get chances here on Saturday. This isn’t due to any weakness per se in this Reds side. It is simply a trade-off. A belief on the part of Klopp’s side that they are more likely to score through the likes of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita, than the opponents are with the handful of chances given up.

However, should the worst happen, and Liverpool do actually fall behind in the game, this team seems to find another gear in their pursuit of the goal they lost. This Liverpool side has fallen behind just twice this season, and has spent just 28 minutes in a losing position; 10 minutes less than Chelsea and 55 minutes less than Manchester City.

They have had 6 shots in those 28 minutes for a combined sum of 1.44 expected goals; or 4.61 xG per 90. While it is a small sample size, this is more than double the 2.16 xG per 90 of chances they create when in a tied game-state.

In contrast, Brighton gives up better chances than they create for themselves when tied or behind. The only game state in which they outperform their opponent in terms of the quality of chances created is when they are already ahead in the match.

This all suggests that the first goal in this match could be vital for Brighton. If Liverpool get ahead, then the Seagulls could be picked off when they open up in search of an equaliser, just as United did last weekend. However, should they get ahead in the game, it would allow them to sit deep and counterattack against Liverpool.

Even then, they would still need to deal with the hosts’ extra gear they find when behind.

Liverpool team news vs Brighton

Harvey Elliott remains on the long-term injury list following his fracture-dislocation of the ankle against Leeds United. The talented teenager looks set to be out until 2022.

James Milner lasted just 27 minutes of last weekend’s 0-5 win in Manchester before being forced off with a hamstring injury. The veteran midfielder will now be out until the next international break. Curtis Jones is expected to replace him in the starting XI.

Caoimhin Kelleher missed the trip to Manchester and the midweek EFL Cup match against Preston due to illness. He faces a fitness test to be involved here. Adrian is expected to continue on the bench in his absence.

Fabinho likewise missed the last 2 matchday squads due to a minor knee issue. He also faces a late fitness test to be involved here.

Thiago Alcantara has missed the last 4 league games for Liverpool with a calf injury. He is back in team training, though, and is expected to make a return before the coming international break. Brighton likely comes too soon for him, however.

Naby Keita was on the receiving end of a two-footed Paul Pogba tackle in Manchester that earned United’s midfielder an early bath. It was enough to require Keita to leave the field, but thankfully he is only suffering from some bruising and isn’t expected to be ruled out for long. He is rated as touch and go to be involved here. If fit, Fabinho is expected to replace the Guinean in the starting XI.

Graham Potter

Brighton team news vs Liverpool

Tudor Baluta and Kjell Scherpen are still out due to injury for Brighton.

Danny Welbeck and Steven Alzate also look set for a spell on the sidelines after having surgery.

Taylor Richards is ruled out with a lower back injury. Jeremy Sarmiento or Jürgen Locadia will replace him on the bench.

Dan Burn only managed 45 minutes against Leicester City before being withdrawn with a knee injury. While it isn’t expected to be too severe, he is ruled out for the weekend. Shane Duffy is expected to return to the starting XI in his absence.

Tariq Lamptey has been a substitute in the last 2 league games. After being rested entirely for the midweek trip to Leicester in the EFL Cup, it is believed that he could be in line to start here for the first time since his recovery from injury. If not, Solly March will continue at right wing-back.
